Title: Kokanee Chrome
Post by: snocohunter on May 08, 2013, 03:39:56 PM
Fished lake stevens this morning, went 4 for 6. Fishing in the top 15' no downriggers.  Pink splatter dick nite dodger, orange wedding ring with 12lb leader and double pink gamakatsu hooks. Dick Nite Kokanee scented shoepeg corn. The biggest fish decided to do a death roll in my cheapie folding net and threaded the hook back through the wedding ring and it's own mouth. had to cut off and ended up with a 10" leader. Next turn on my figure 8 hooked up to fish number 4. Not bad for a couple hours time on the water.

About 30 spools on the spinning reel, similar on my baitcaster as well. Far! Lol. I'm going to attempt to get out at the crack o' dawn tomorrow since i talked to a guy who limited by 730 or so. He was out at first light.

This year's goal for me is to become a Kokanee killer.  I have American Lake close by and what few Kokes I have caught have all been nice fat fish.  went out Sunday and never hooked up except for rainbows up on top.   Nice fish.  Maybe some year I will have to get up to Lake Stevens.

The kid and I went Saturday and Sunday and took home 8 big ones each day. We were letting the smaller ones go. Sunday we missed a ton of hits for some reason. We were trying out the sickle hooks.....I can say I am not a fan...going back to the gami's.

We had really good luck with pink or green mini squid with glow in the dark heads early in the morning. I have a couple flashers with  a glow in the  dark finish that we are going to try this weekend before it gets light.

If you see a camo sled with a pair of older Yamaha's on it say hi!   :hello:

I don't think they are record fish but the 15" fish was a fatty. And the others were all great fish too. I gotta give some credit to Greg at Greg's Custom Rods. I did what he said and it works. Good people him and his wife.

Take me take me :hello:

You're welcome to join me, my boat or yours. I posted on the open sat thread awhile back. Anyone else that wants to go sometime just let me know.

Couple things....

Snoco and I are gonna slay them tomorrow! If anyone is out look for a white North River with gray canvas.....

I ate at Razzles last night and didn't even get crabs.

Snoco....I got some worms in the fridge from last weekend....can we tip our wedding rings with worms? Is corn better?

Better to remove your wedding ring, but this time of year you still have the tan line from it.. and didnt you get crabs last summer?

Do you have to get out early to catch them? I'm in dire need of some sleep and don't want to get up early tomorrow. I would like to fish though and it's supposed to be nasty on the salt. This might be a good option.

Post by: mallard79 on May 10, 2013, 12:49:55 PM
My son and I will be out in the morning.

FYI: There is a electric motor only bass tournament tomorrow so the launch will be busy.

The bite is best early but you can catch them later but it can get TOUGH!

Thanks Mallard....I think you and I have met on the water before...talked perch fishing...

I plan on being there well before sun up to get in the water, motors running, kicker warmed up....thank kind of thing. I really prefer the west side launch but if I remember they don't open the gate for parking until like 8 am or something.

Ripper.....towards the norht end of the lake, by the bubbler....it gets deep...well over a hundred. I've marked fish all the way down during the mid day sun.

We'll have corn soaked in anise and dick nite's DNA kokanee gel. They aren't deep yet if you get out earlier in the day. I caught my last two fish around 9 am long lining with 1/2 of weight. Also the gulp maggots work pretty good. I've caught more on corn than maggots myself. Some guys like the gulp brand crappie nibbles.

We can fish 5' - 10' down on the riggers and long line one out the back. Do you have any of the smaller DR clips? I couldn't find the ones i picked up at a g sale when i looked last night. They have a little easier release.

Title: Re: Kokanee Chrome
Post by: snocohunter on May 10, 2013, 05:04:44 PM
Very boat shy. We fish a ways back for them, and they usually really start to fight when they see the boat. We'll be a ways back from the clip not sure how good of footage we will get but it's worth a shot.

Wow Mallard! You slayed 'em! About 11, I said screw it, and threw on a nightcrawler, and caught a mess of perch to help me feel better about my one kokanee  :chuckle:

BTW I had a North River just like your description h20, cut my trolling line off  >:(  But I seen two like your boat, and this one I am pretty sure was not yours  :chuckle:

I'm going to do the derby again, and I hope to do better than last year. We only managed 3 small ones on derby day, but we were putting a bunch of big ones in the boat just prior to it. Watch out for team "Live Action" this year, we might just have it dialed in!
Title: Re: Kokanee Chrome

I am hoping we can find the bigger ones again when saturday rolls around.....how bad is launching on saturday morning? How early do you need to be there to get a decent parking spot?  I am tempted to launch friday night and anchor up and sleep on the boat just so I don't have to deal with the launch mess.
Title: Re: Kokanee Chrome
Post by: snocohunter on May 12, 2013, 03:41:10 PM
I woke up at 4, heard the rain, and rolled back over and went o sleep. By 830 the wind was whipping pretty good so I decided not to fight it out there. I bought a derby ticket. Not sure if I'm fishing alone in my boat, or with someone else. I have friends on the lake with a dock I could probably tie up to the day before. Otherwise I live 1 minute from the launch and could get there real early and then park on the road by my apartments.

Has anyone ever tried going out at midnight with one of those green/flourescent lights  :dunno: Seems like it would work pretty well if all that kokanee eat is green stuff...Worth a shot if someone had one...

Got four more yesterday with saltwaterhillbilly. It was slow at first, but we picked up a few decent ones.

Not sure the plan for Saturday, struggling to get my DR mounted to the boat in a decent fashion.

Right on.....how long do you think the fishery will go. I'd like to get back out once I get my bear tag filled. Will be happy to have you along anytime I go.

The fishery will go for a while......they will start going deeper soon....I have caught them @ 105' down in late July early August but for good numbers I would bet we still have about a month or so left. The water skiers start hitting the water early once the weather gets warmer and can become a factor when following the schools as they stage for their spawning run.

So what you're saying is you are retiring your kokanee gear....  :P

I got a lake close to my house loaded with kokanee, its not a very big lake but has a 2 deep holes 50' and 67'+. I used to fish it all the time and would usually limit out within 2 hrs using a custom homemade setup based off an old setup my dad used years and years ago. I'll put up some pics of my handmade setup in a min. Deeper was always better and I ran an 18' leader with just half a fat earthworm on a #1 offset eagle claw.

Snoco, you need to set some crawdad traps out there.  I know they're in there.

Some big ones in the lake. I've set traps just off the dock for kicks and giggles. We've taken them home and boiled them up. Tasty.

Ran into "team live action" at the launch this morning. Hope you guys did good, i scratched out 4 and left at around 10:30 to go tie up the boat.

Stang, i don't own any crawdad traps. I'm sure someone could make them. They probably hang out around the shores and creek entrances

If you want to give it a go I've got a couple traps you can borrow. An overnight soak with a koke head should yield good results.

Extremely easy and cheap to make man. Just buy some 1/2 or 3/8 "inch chicken wire, zipties/wire ties, And follow some simple little designs they have online. I made mine last year in an hour.

Is there a general preference for which of the three options for the biodegradable devices to use on the traps?

Anyone fish the derby today?  It looked well attended but I couldn't tell if anyone was catching anything.

It was a pretty good turnout. Quite a few fish caught. It wasn't red hot but decent. The fish are running a bit bigger than they have the last couple of years. Lots of fish over a pound. My boat lost a bunch of fish but landed 19 out of a possible 30. My son had a bonus catch of a 2.2lb rainbow and a 12" cutthroat. It was a good time.

"Snoco"  it was good to meet ya out there. Dad and I got 6 and went in around 11am.
Derby day we landed 16, biggest fish for us was 1.2lb. I weighed in a 1.1, but after we got home I realized I had one in the box that was a bit bigger :bash:

I had my worst day ever on derby day. Not sure what I was doing wrong. Everything was the same as far as I could tell. Same setup a I've been using.
