Title: PPU ammo: You get what you pay for.
Post by: EDT on May 08, 2013, 10:31:04 PM: I bought several boxes of PPU ammo at Cabelas because of the great price. I went out and shot some of it, I thought it was going to tear my 243 to shreads, minute pieces of brass at the bolt, and I believe it roughed the inside of the magazine, causing subsequent scratches on the any new brass. I had no other scratches on any brass before i used PPU. Just a user review, I CAN NOT reccommend PPU.

I bought some Privi Partizan in 7x57mm Rimmed 139gr and it is superb. This is the first group fired for record out of a drilling I bought and Weaver K-1.5 in home made rings at 100yrds.

At $17.00/20 it is hard to even think about reloading for this rig

Post by: EDT on May 09, 2013, 07:07:07 PM: I truely dont know whay it is scratching the brass now, but before I used the PPU there were no scratches on any brass. when I close the bolt on by remington or federal ammo, it is easy and smooth, when I close the bolt on PPU ammo it feels rough and I almost have to force the bolt down, when I interchange between PPU and federal, each time the PPU is rough and federal is smooth. TEACH ME...what do you think is wrong???

Check the Over all length of the PPU compared to the federal I have a suspicion that the PPU might be longer

they are very very close.

SO do you guys think it is still ok to shoot them? They fire fine, it is just everything else that is just plain rough.

The Remington has a rotating extractor, after the extractor lip snaps over the rim of the cartridge it rotates a quarter turn before the lugs are locked. It sounds like the PPU cartridge might have a sharper inside edge to the rim and as the extractor is rotating it is scraping off this sharp edge. A contributing factor might be that you have a minimum spec chamber and the PPU ammo is at max spec and is snug in the chamber(not a bad thing, it's something we strive for in reloading by neck sizing) and not allowing the cartridge to rotate with the bolt.

Honestly,I think you nailed it. This is exactly how it presents. The base is not as tapered as other shells......I guess I shouldn't be so harsh to PPU. :bash:

I have found PPU doing this exact thing in my Rem 700 by scraping some brass off... I have shot a lot of their ammo, and the match 308 was some of the best ammo I have ever bought and their .25-06 in 90gr is definitely sub-moa and one hell of a coyote killer...
