Went up morel hunting and we were all wondering what the heck left the poop.....looked 3-4 times the size of elk poop and was oval shaped twas in the blue here outside of Dayton Washington. Possibly moose? There was enough where it's more than 1 it's a party of at least 3! Because the poop was all over the place. Oh and yes we scored heavily on the morels
-
Looks like giant elk poo.
-
Milk Duds. :twocents:

But light brown, oval and a bunch like elk would leave?? Like khaki color almost. What else could it even be?
-
Sounds like dry old moose poo.

Thanks guys

Like deer poo, but with bigger noses... :chuckle:
Not inconceivable to be moose poo up there. We have a population of them, but they're few and far between. Sounds like that's what you found.
-
I was wondering the same thing when I found some up in Omak while turkey hunting. Thought it was moose.
-
I have shed hunted for moose for years and guided moose for 10 years. I have watched both sex poop and thats how. Know moose better then most.

This is the most hilarious post I have ever read on Hunt-Wa since I joined in 2008. I believe this thread will overtake the great D-Man Bobcat post, circa 2010. This may be my new signature line from now on. Still debating. :chuckle:

The D-Man Bobcat post still rules as the most hilarious!

Seriously, I have nothing to add here. I just look at "unread posts" and look for Billdo's replies. Something good normally follows :chuckle:

And all this time I've been looking for antlers to see if there's bulls and I should be looking up piles of turds. How would you tell the bull is a big bull would it be by the size of the pile or the size of the turd in the pile. Good luck with your argument.
-
I don't look for poop to know where the winter. I know alot more sign then that for where they winter but I am not going to give up all of my secrets I is the Moose Whisper :tung:

:dunno: Bull or cow? As you know there is a distinct difference.
-
I give up you win :cryriver:
-
Wow i dont even want to get involved in this nonsense :bash:
-
I have a friend that swears bull elk poop comes out in the rope-like clumps, while cow elk poop is always individual pellets. Started to try to convince him that it might have more to do with what they eat, but I gave up.
-

I am totally joking. I hope this is true. I will have learned something valuable for when I draw my Moose permit in 72 years. :chuckle:
-
maybe in 72 years it will have wolf fur in it. Of course it will have evolved into squares by then.
-

squares for cows or bulls? :chuckle:
-
Square=bull. Rectangle=cow. But I can't tell you the rest of my secrets.
-

I'm pretty sure we won't have moose in 72 years Bone.
If we do there will be 2 left and that's when I will draw the tag.
Good thing about it is I can go find the crap and determine if it is bullcrap or cowcrap.
-
I feel really stupid. All these years instead of looking at its shape I have been doing it by taste. :bash:

Don't feel stupid that is yet another secret in the moose game. Taste is how you tell how old a moose is, its basically it's a form of carbon dating.
-
:chuckle:
The saltier it is, the bigger the antlers. That's where they came up with the saying. "Old Salt"
-
A couple of you are close but, I'm really disappointed so many hunters know so little about accurately determining the sex of a moose via it's droppings.
I'll let you in on the secret so you don't keep embarrassing yourselves around campfires and coffee tables.
If it tastes like chocolate it's a bull. If it tastes like caramel, it's a cow.
I thought everybody knew that? :dunno:
-
I don't know how to link it, ask Bone.
-
And all these years I have been looking for a dimple in the droppings.
-
And all these years I have been looking for a dimple in the droppings.
Here I will explain why your theory was wrong. The turds roll off the bulls sack it does bounce off. This creates the perfect round shape and not the dimple. For the difference between cow and bull, the bull turds stay in contact with the bulls body longer than a cows.
-
Speaking of Odessa and moose, did you see them in town last week (Serious).
-
I didn't actually get to see it but I heard there was one that was running the streets at night. Has been for a couple weeks I guess!?!?!? I saw calf just about ten miles north of town out by the lakes about a month ago, possible the same moose.
-
Seems like they always move down this time of the year, not sure why. It was either last year or 11' that they had one stuck in the Esquatzel Canal north of Pasco. I hope they take hold wherever they can, away from the damn wolves.
Sorry to get sidetracked. Let's stay on Course here. I am learning a lot about Moose Poop Identification.

Actually, I think we have gotten the final word on that, haven't we...?

Your right. What was I thinking? :chuckle:

Can we get a biologist on hear to clarify what in the male sphincter is different than that of a female sphincter?
Although 6haase6 had a reasonable explanation based on the roll off of the scrotum sack.
-
There is no difference in bull or cow. It is all the same!!! Very true
-
it looks like this
Moose Poop (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZw20zVAGbg#)
-
And now we need a video of a bull pooping because those are clearly oval shaped terds coming out of that cow!
-
I am looking so far just bulls dancing

Kind of piping in blind here. Just thought I'd say that my grandmother used to own a shop back in Maine where she sold sweaters and other random stuff. One of the random things was sets of earrings that were just lacquered moose poops with fishing swivels for clips. Nobody EVER bought them. Lol

I sure hope the special permit drawing happens soon, then the big mystery over a moose's poop will be put to rest, or maybe not this thread could live on forever :chuckle:

Depends on the occasion... Bullpoop earrings for informal occasions, fancier cowpoop ovals for the formal stuff...
Gotta keep it classy, right?

So much potential here.

Growing up in New Hampshire, I once had some flat landers (also referred to as mass-holes, and very similar to coasties here in wa) ask me where they could find moose poop. They were talking about doing similar things with it. At first I thought they were joking... As the conversation went on I realized they weren't. :yike:
-
What an awesome thread. So glad to see if back on top.
-
wow yea two posts lol funny thread though.... Moos poop. Tastes like chocolate or not. :chuckle:
-
the pics I seen on here shows me moose poop thats round and oval, this leads me to the conclusion that said moose was laying down..How do I know this you ask???Well, after years of studies,we found we could tell how tall the moose was buy their droppings,,The average moose's butt is 5.8inches off the ground. Now we found that when each pellet drops it leaves a flat spot on one end of the dropping...Thus the taller the moose, the larger the flat spot...We found that the really tall trophy class moose actually had flat pellets, like oatmeal cookies...Those moose are anywhere from 6.1 feet to 6.6 feet at the anal.We did lose a few of our bioligists in this study, not so much from measuring the diameter of the flat spot, but trying to get a precise measurement of the ground to anus height...The dimpled moose droppings were simple, they actually landed on top of a moose turd that was on end thus creating a dimple...Its been a few years since the study, and some high end {parden the pun}equiptment has come out, making this study safer..We now have what looks like a typical range finder,Butt in reality it measures height, and is good out to 25yrds,thus keep our bioligists out of hoof range...That's what we have arrived at with this study, hope you found it of good use..Now we are working on how to tell a benchleg buck dropping from a true westside blacktail buck dropping,,,,

That is an amazing explanation at 4:30 in the morning.
