What is a good "score" for a Shiras moose, or does anyone know where to access the WA state big game score book?
-
NW big game records web site is in links but there records have not been updated. its updated every 3 or 4 years i think and they are due

200 B & C would be a good score!!!! I wouldn't pass on 195 bulls looking for a 200 though. LOL
-
For Pope & Young, the minimums are:
Canada = 135"
Alaska-Yukon = 170"
Shiras' = 125"
Boone and Crockett have an on-line score sheet that's pretty easy to follow:

Nothin like going right for the world record you'd be stupid to pass a 160 waiting IMO since the state record is 176... To answer the question a 140+ is a good Shiras.

Thanks, my dad green scored his at 160 +- a few points.

Watch out, they shrink a lot and you get deductions. They can also be difficult to score. Palm length will be the most difficult thing to score on that moose and it may get confusing. Remember, you don't go down the palm and out the brow tine. You do it in a straight line parallel to the inside edge gover over the open area and straight out to the fork in the front brow. I do think that his moose will score well though. I scored it from the picture and guessed around 155+ depending on whether a few of the points will qualify as they need to be longer than wide. Post the numbers you measured so we can guess. Another note, a scorer told me they use blue masking tape and they actually wrap it half way up the thickness of the palm to account for the palm thickness. Then they measure the tape and get the length. Hope that makes sense. Do we have an official measurer for moose on this forum? I would love to have a tutorial thread with pictures. Maybe something we can work on? We are going to have these issues every year...
If you ask me, I think a 140"+ moose is a big moose. That's B&C. If you have a B&C animal, how can it be small? I think a 160+ is a whopper.

Looking at the scores listed above I believe they are old. My moose from last year I believe is now #5 at 159 3/8.
Cougeyes... your dad's bull looks to have really good overall spread and good paddle length. They may be a little narrow to scrore way up there. It's real hard to tell sometimes from photos regarding palm length because of the way they measure em. I'm guessing it'll gross pretty darn good but may lose some on the net depending on how the paddle length turns out. Dandy bull regardless. Definitely wouldn't pass that bugger up......

That could be Intruder, I got the book 2 years ago when I entered one of my deer. I have no idead how often they reprint it with new stats. Congrats on the bull though, sounds like a real pig.

His bull already shrunk an inch. He just followed the measurements off the B&C website. He wasn't entirely sure how to score it, and didn't use the correct tape measure. Some of the upper points he wasn't sure if they were long enough to measure. So it most likely is less than 160, he'll get it officially measured once the "drying" period is up...whenever that is. It'll make a cool mount though.

The above scores are from the current book (2nd addition). Last I heard they were going to have a new one out soon. :dunno:

I think the recording period ends in the spring 09 so the book would be out after that. 08 is the last season to kill an animal to have it in the next edition of the book.

Thanks.
I have sent a few messages in the last year to the NW BG site and never get reply.
