Title: good possibility, im moving to eastern Oregon this July

I hunted elk over there for 3 muzzleloader seasons in a row about 7-8 years ago (bought some nonresident tags via an outfitter.).

The country was beautiful, game was relatively plentiful and the people were great.

Made wish I could live the each time I visited.

The Strawberry Mountain Wilderness is a stone's throw away and you're in the wilderness. Headwater of the John Day are near there as well, from what I recall.

Post by: Doublelunger on May 13, 2013, 07:03:00 PM: Eastern Oregon has some nice critters. I've worked in La Grande for the last 7 summers and most of the guys I work with are big hunters. Seems to me they don't have as many options for general seasons and it takes some time to draw the good tags. I've kept my Washington residency over the years because the late archery is what I live for, but I've been tempted to become an Oregonian because of the elk down here.

Post by: muzbuster on May 14, 2013, 06:41:48 AM: Hunted deer outside of Unity several times, I love hunting there.LOTS of bears also, my record sightings in one day was 7 different bears (3 were cubs) to bad I didnt have a tag :bash: I have never seen an area hold so many blue grouse, got to go after them early because it closes when riffle deer season starts. The locals down there consider it to be better elk hunting then deer in that area but we really enjoy the deer hunting. Good fishing in Unity reservoir also. :twocents:

The deer numbers weren't the best but we ended up with a couple of small bucks. Saw some nice bull elk and antelope. Also lots of blue grouse, sage grouse, and chukar. I'd move there in a heartbeat if I could. I can't think of anywhere in Washington that compares.

We may be hunting the Malheur unit for antelope this year or next. Got 11 points we need to burn.

Oregon Administrative Rule (OAR) 635-010-0015(4)(a) provides the legal standard for purchasing a resident license: “A
resident is one who has physically dwelled in Oregon continuously for the six months prior to applying for a license. Temporary
absences from Oregon during that time period do not defeat a person’s residency so long as such absences were not for the
purpose of establishing residency outside Oregon.” The legal requirement is implemented by this certification that a license applicant
must sign: “I, the undersigned, hereby certify and declare that the information provided to obtain this license/tag is true.
To acquire an Oregon resident license/tag I certify that I have resided continuously within Oregon no less than six months immediately
prior to applying for this license/tag. I have resided in Oregon for ___ Years ____ Months. I acknowledge this license
was issued as requested and understand that no refund will be made.”

These requirements are waived for certain active members of the armed forces and for some foreign exchange students (see
OAR 635-010-0015(4) for details). Submitting a false application is a crime.

Post by: wence5 on May 22, 2013, 02:13:26 PM: For Mule deer it's too late for you this year. They are all draw on the east side for deer, and I think first season elk is draw too. The deadline is already past, plus you would not be considered a resident until next years hunt. You might just make it for the second elk season, which is still over the counter. Lots of good areas to cover. I cut my teeth roaming the hills of eastern Oregon. Lots of elk in Northside unit.
