I just happened to spot two monster whitetails living in a patch of ''woods'' not bigger than acre north of northwest blvd. and ash in spokane. The were bedded right next to the road, but VERY well hidden. Amazing.... I had turkeys come through the parking of my office three blocks north of the courthouse a few weeks back. They all seem to make a good living here. They sure can make themselves comfortable in Suburbia.
How can you tell they're 'Monsters' yet?

They have already branched out into 5 points, and the tines are 5-6'' already. That is ALOT of growth for being only May.
-
Right on the curve by the little spring?
-
Let's go get em. There's also a pretty good sized turkey flock on the south hill off of southeast blvd.

That is impressive,
I guess with an easy lifestyle with low snow and good nutrition that'll happen a lot sooner.

I've ran across this bunch I think.
Only turkeys around Spokane that I could hit with my bow :)
-
The bigger bucks are showing it already. The 150 class buck I killed in 2010 was a 5 point by mid may that year.

That is about 3 blocks from my office. May have to grab the camera and take a little walk at lunch. Thanks for the info
I have never seen a deer around my office. Coyotes and a Moose, but no deer. LOL
PS: didn't realize you were so close. I have that set of traditional archery books I mentioned on your bow thread. Would loan them to you if you are interested?

my wife saw a fawn in my neighborhood, just about a mile north of there, south of rowan, north of wellesley, between maple and monroe. pretty out of place... i'll tell my wife to watch out for deer on her way to work... she works off maple/NW Blvd
-
I remember seeing deer pretty frequently in that area too when I lived in Spokane - but no bucks that I can recall. Mostly in the big park on the north side of NW Blvd.
Seen a turkey attack cars on the road to SFCC by the cemetary, a moose just behind Appleway Toyota in the valley, and I remember reports of black bears in Peaceful Valley, but never seen them myself. Spokane is pretty "wild"! har har...

I just went for a walk at lunch to that spot Lucky
No deer at noon, but there is some pretty thick stuff in there. The
Colville tribe is doing some major cleanup of the Drumheller park just above that spot and they had been through this am with some weedeaters.
Talked to a Gal that lives on the hill and she sees them all the time, and had a turkey there yesterday.

It is amazing how many large bucks are around here in city limits. I was on the lower south hill by Altamont at dusk and almost hit 3 nice whitetails running down the road. Also had a moose walk through my yard and out the back ally 3 years ago on 37th and Grand.

Was that the same moose that went thru Manito CC.? We have seen deer, moose, yotes and turkeys out here in the valley.

Best I ever saw was a coyote on Wabash between Maple and Ash going home one night. I also remember one summer there was a group of does in the treed area out Indian Trail before you get to Strong Rd.

A little off topic, but I was just at a conference in Spokane and played golf in hangman valley, what a piece of heaven that area is. I saw some very weird people in town but just out of town 5 minutes is a beautiful area, especially hangman valley.

The growing season has a large effect on antler development..I hunt deer south of Spokane all the way up to the Canadian border and there is a big difference on the stage of growth from the 2 extremes. The vegetation in gmu 127 versus 101 is almost 3 weeks in green-up difference. It shows in antler growth..my bucks I watch in ferry in mid June look like the bucks here in mid may.
The largest buck I ever harvested was a 6x5 on May 18th with about 110" of antler..finished with 199" but all big bucks (over 160") will have substantial antler on their head by early June.
-
we had mule deer living behind our workplace on hamilton and trent..3pt and 3 does :chuckle:
-
I have also noticed the mountain bucks are generally behind the Spokane area bucks in growth.
-
Live in the valley have had muley buck at flora and broadway in the round about and just south of greenacres middle school i have had deer on my street big bucks around the corner from my house turkey quail i hunt just south of hangman valley golf course
-
Hambone...I grew up about a mile from there..my parents still live there
-
Good area put in for palouse late tag got it 2 years ago and got a nice buck
-
I meant flora and broadway spot :chuckle: I archery hunt 127 already
-
I live a few houses from the Maple/Ash S Curves, just south of Garland. There's a small wooded area just above the S Curves. Yesterday I watched 2 velvety bucks and 2 does wander around.
A few years ago, when we got 6' of snow in 3 days, I stepped out on the porch for my morning smoke to see 2 Mulies (YES Mule Deer) in our driveway. They crossed the street, jumped the guard rail and headed north on Maple. Surprised the heck out of me!

Before they put in the walls on I90 I saw decent bucks in that area regularly, often times south of Broadway in those small overgrown fields among the houses as you head toward Walmart. Don't see them as often now but they still make their way over the freeway from time to time and always catch me off guard when I look over and see one

May 18th? What kind of a season was that? Sounds like farmer season to me.
-
He just needed an extra comma in there. On may 18th it was 110", and finished growing it was 199" Take her easy on the farmers. :chuckle:
