Title: Whos looking for lingzilla tomorrow or Sunday?
Post by: h20hunter on May 17, 2013, 07:50:11 AM
I am! Thats who. I've been hunting and got a little fishing time in for kokes with Snocohunter the other weekend. However, I've been neglecting the sound, my boat is pouting due to lack of salt, and I need some nice filets in the freezer. The tides are probably the best they are going to be this year for bottom fishing and I'm not going to miss it. As long as the weather cooperates I'll probably run out to scatched head and fish my favorite drop off. Lots of ling and cabs for the catching. I've had some great days there. Also, we will be out by the ferry and I usually don't feel right if I haven't lost a few jigs to that sucker. Hoping to pick up some sand dabs as well to work both jigs and live bait. I will be accompanied by none other than Smossy and Smossy-Girl and of course we will have the GoPro cameras running. So, if you are out on the south end of Whidbey goofing off tomorrow look for a white w/ gray top North River and say hello.

Do you guys realize the apparent love-fest  you have for each other on here.  Of all of your thousands of posts, I'm pretty sure 85% of them are redneck love notes back and forth to each other.

On the original post note, I'm going to take the girl out in my 14' cruise ship this weekend and try to snag (by the mouth of course) a 35.5" ling.  Two of them actually.  Hopefully my motor runs and it doesn't sink.

Too bad D-Rock doesn't have a working boat yet or a boat driving license. :hello:

I'll be out acting like I know what I'm doing this weekend. If the wife is going, likely launching in Des Moines and hitting Slag Pile area near the river. If I'm solo, I'm running up north.

If anybody wants to join, happy to chat about it! I'm all kinds of giddy as I think about breaking in my new boat and my new rod...

I was gonna say the same thing reading through this thread.  Get a room you two!

I am considering taking my boat out and tossing in a line Saturday as well, prolly around Posession somewhere.

I may be out. I am trying to decide if it is better to take a 9 year old out to catch lings and dig clams or if I should keep him on trout for now. I guess I could always hook him up with flounder, but he may get impatient waiting for a ling to bite....and then again, I could "accidentally" catch a few rockfish for him to reel up  :chuckle:

Of course my mind is set on lings  :chuckle:

I'm taking my girl out to the San Juans for some shrimp and ling fishing. May even try for Halibut. Supposed to be good tides, little wind, maybe just a bit of wind. Looks perfect. Might even pull into Friday Harbor for a late lunch/early diner. Good fishing and tight lines everyone.

What lb line we using? Im going to have to respool tonight.
Was thinking 40lb (10lb mono equivalent) power pro since everyone Is saying its the go-to braid tied with a double uni 20lb mono end.
That way I know Ill be able to hold a good 200+ yards of it.
Title: Re: Whos looking for lingzilla tomorrow or Sunday?

That is perfect. I don't use mono at the end.....straight braid.

The monos just incase he runs under something, I need to break off. That way I only lose a tiny bit of mono instead of X amount of braid. Were heading to the store now to pick some stuff up.

That's funny, I actually do better on the lings when the water is moving a bit more.  Seems the harder the fishing, the better I do.

I'll be sneaking out at 5:30 tomorrow on a neighbor's boat to the south end of Lopez for shrimp and maybe some lings.  And, I'll still get a fiull day's work in.

Don't feel bad -we also got skunked around Whidbey  :bash:.I think we have to move north closer to Lokidog in order to catch fish nowadays. We were fishing Halibutus brutus with 40 other boats and I haven't seen any fish caught around us all day .We got whole bunch of Flaunders ,but you couldn't keep the bait on the bottom because it will get stripped in matter of minutes......... I had my stockings (don't laugh) full of herring and in 10 minutes they were gone .....I was looking for you H20 , but the only white NR with gray top was by Hat island late around 5pm.
Because of the fishing success I have decided to start golfing or chess ,or fish the coast line like the big guys .

Good luck out there today, looks like a great day to be on the water.

Cap. Silver, did those flounder have any size to them?  I caught two of unknown variety out here last year that were 17 and 18 inches, they looked tumory but the meat was good.  These are the only ones I've caught up here.

Man....what a tough two days of trying for lings. I swear the fishing gods have it out for me. Great tides.....terrible weather. We went back out on the bar this morning and fished the honey hole. There were a few others out. However, the wind was worse than yesterday even though the waves were a bit better. We would drift, reset, drift, reset, drift while backing into the wind....just didn't work. We saw virtually no fishing being caught. After two hours of working at it we bailed. Caught a few rockfish...one pretty nice blackie that I'll upload a clip of.

Does anybody have a better launch alternative? $45 just to get the boat in the water is a bit steep...

hawksfan75 - the Mukilteo should open up any time now,but its $15 now and the ramp sucks ..... Your other alternative is Everett with 10 mile rundown to Posession and I think is  $8 or &10 to launch.....

To add...

I launched at Mukilteo Saturday.  Launch fee was $10.  Of note...  the launch there is only 2 useable lanes.  The docks were built with the pilings outside each dock on either side, so you can only really use the inside of each dock or you risk smashing into the piling guards that are steel and down at the water line where you can't push off them.  Also, there is nothing between you and posession sound.  No breakwater, no nothing.  That means every wake from every boat and every wind wave comes straight into the dock, full speed, and usually right into your transom, tossing your boat around pretty heavily at times.  This can lead to a lot of hitting the dock, swamping lower transoms, etc.....

At Edmonds, yes the sling is expensive, and watch their hours of operation!  If you wanna pull your boat and they are closed, it's not fun at all to figure out how to get boat and truck/trailer to the next useable ramp!

Everett is the cheapest launch at $8, and by far the nicest, but it is also the most used.  On a given weekend, with good weather and a good season open, the lines can be pretty long pretty early!  Personally, Everett is my local launch of choice, I just try to plan around the crowds or be patient.

Post by: h20hunter on May 20, 2013, 09:39:38 AM
I wouldn't launch from Mukilteo if it was free for all the above mentioned reasons. Everett is the go to launch for me.

Wow you got some great pics SG! Looks like the rock fish numbers are growing in strength. Maybe, just maybe they will open it again someday for retention. Even with a 1 or 2 fish limit it would be nice. Dare to dream! Right now I'm waiting for June 1 when I can catch and sturgeon in the local waters.

They may open it again.  We used to have a good population but then the draggers came in force and really put a hurting on the local fish.  It's been a bunch of years since and it seems the population is rebounding finally.  Hopefully they don't come back and do it again.

They may open it again.  We used to have a good population but then the draggers came in force and really put a hurting on the local fish.  It's been a bunch of years since and it seems the population is rebounding finally.  Hopefully they don't come back and do it again.

What are draggers?

What are draggers?

Easiest definition.  Trawlers that take everything when they come through dragging a net on the bottom.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fishing_trawler (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fishing_trawler)

Well after my dads health issues were stable, we were able to make it out this last weekend. We were able to boat 5 keeper lingcod, 2 were small and one over sized. Smallest keeper was in at 29" and the biggest slid right under the slot limit at 35 1/2" (my fish). My buddy fought and threw back a pig that measured out at 43". My 5 yr was able to reel in his first legal fish :). My three yr old reeled in his first flounder :). Had a couple long line releases (lost fish), a couple felt huge. We also caught a few copper rock fish, which the eagles feasted on. It was a great trip!! My boys saw seals, dolphins and jelly fish. Had one fish get chomped at the tail by a seal. I will post up a few pictures in the next day or so. We didn't see any other fish caught. But sure got crowded when we hooked up :). Can't wait to make it back over! Thanks Pop.

Why are the eagles feasting on your coppers?  This is part of the problem and why they have stopped allowing us to keep rockfish in the Sound.  Please try to release them so they live.  There are lots of methods to do so, the upside down milk crate seems to be one of the easiest.

The problem with that idea is that the draggers have been out of the Sound for, I think, at least 25 years.  They did huge amounts of damage and their trails can still be seen on the bottom today.  Now, I think a huge part of the problem are the seals, i know that "they" say the seals don't eat many, but why then are the seals in all of the places where I catch rockfish?

I'd be fine with even an 80 foot restriction for fishing for our one keeper rockfish if they are so worried about the canaries and yellow eye.

Like Loki said, a rockfish decent device works great. And they are easy to make, just fill concrete in a can with some kind of barbless hook.

I have never caught a rockfish and would want it to survive if i hooked one. What do you do to releas rockfish with the milk crate, weight the bottom of it and drop it down? :dunno:

Watched a guy next to me pulling something that was NOT a ling and throw it in his boat.  :bash:

I would, but I'm headed to Long Island for a wedding...  You dont want to go with me anyway though.  Most Lings are bigger than my boat, however I'm so bad at catching them there's no risk of capsizing.

If you're serious about going, meet me down at Scuttlebutt's at 8am.  Severe tides that day, so bring some 4oz to 8oz cannonball sinkers and your favorite rod.  I got everything else (got an extra ling rod too, if you don't).  We should be able to catch our bait before the tide slacks and have a decent chance at getting into some lings for a few hours around 10 to 1pm.  Probably be all done by 2, which is just in time to harass H20 into taking us to the range... right H20??

Oh.  I see i am remiss in allowing our expectations to have gotten a bit higher than they should be.  Im usually the master at setting low expectations - that way nobody is really disappointed.  You, my boss, the ladies...
So let's plan on calling the day a success when we catch our dabs for bait. Even if we dont get you a ling, we can make up a flounder bomb and go "help out" H20 and Ripper where they're not fishing for sturg.

It'll be a fun day no matter what. The only thing I'm worried about is the wind. 8mph out the NNW. Wind never is good for sturgeon fishing. Any fishing for that matter!.
Title: Re: Whos looking for lingzilla tomorrow or Sunday?
Post by: Skillet on June 06, 2013, 07:45:52 AM
I'm looking at a different report, or a different area.  For Everett, I've got a predicted 8-11 NNW until about noon, where it rolls around to NNE and drops to 6mph at 1.

It will be a little lumpy out there on the drift, but we'll tough that out to tangle with the toothy ones.  I know that anchoring up for sturg in the wind can be tricky, though, especially when the flood tide and wind are running against each other.  Gonna give it a shot, though!

You guys have no idea how to scout.  I'll show you.

1) Find an open area
2) Bring your half rack
3) Sit at open area and consume half rack
4) Take a nap
5) Come back to campfire, tell stories of huge herds of animals and probably a moose or grizz sighting
6) Eat, Sleep, Wakeup and Repeat

You'll see, I'm great at scouting.

Ha, no worries.

We might want to get started a little bit earlier if you're willing- I got a tip from a MOST EXCELLENT sturgeon fisher that the outgoing tide might be when want to plunk bait for them... I like fishing ling on the flood, so it is a "win-win... win".  I'm going out Friday night to catch the dabs, so we don't need to dink around with that on Saturday unless you really want to.

Here is the first ling I caught two weekends ago. 35 feet of water, not far offshore at Westport. Too bad I didn't buy a derby ticket. 36 lbs.. :(

What charterboat were you on?

Got another good pic of D's ling I'll post up here soon, and there might be some video of the catch floating around as well...

I'd tell you but Ripper swore me to secrecy location. It is a honey hole indeed.....very secret river......in the north end.....nowhere near a point accesible by kayak....not in snohomish county.....does not end in "guamish"......

Well, How'd you do?  We've all heard about D-Rock and his Ling domination.  Did you catch any of those prehistoric bottom feeders up on the river or just get a boat ride?

No we didn't catch any. It was a horrible day to sturgeon fish on Sunday. The wind was relentless and the waves had white caps. I got one sure hit but missed it on the hook set. Saw a couple of real bruisers cruising the shallows, that was cool!

I was out running errands yesterday and kept thinking you guys would be having a helluva time of it in that wind.

Here's that other pic of D's ling from Saturday-

Had a good time indeed. My face and neck are fried......shoulda put on a little sunscreen I guess.

Skillet....you should have made him lip that sucker. Real men hold ling by the lower jaw.

A little hazing would have been totally appropriate, I agree - but he did come through with the elk steaks and also brought some bear sausage to snack on.  That right there earns a guy access to the boga grip.

Yep I gave him elk steaks.  Last time I gave H20 elk steaks he gave them away to someone else :bash:   :yike:

No....don't start that rumor......I didn't willingly give them away....silly drunk girl took the wrong ones!

I'm just going to go on the record and say that I plan on eating them all myself.  BUT, there has been a silly drunk girl or two at the house, and when my neck is all swollen up I tend to not focus on taking inventory of my freezer.

Thanks for the warning, H20.  I'll just eat them sooner than later.

Sounds like that is the best plan Skillet.....when in the rut we make poor decisions. We've all been there.

Smossy, you don't have to have a boat.  You can rig up a inner-tube!

lol Ultimate seasickness right there. I wouldn't trust that on the ocean unless It had some extreme counter-weights on the bottom to help stabilize it. I did watch him fish that on TV though and he did a hell of a job. You see the one where they fish  deep water in just wetsuits, fins, and a pole?  Floating on they're back with a pole hooked to theyre stomach and in the air. Crazzy

Hmmm... Let's see.  Intentionally hooking a fish with a sharp pointy spear on it's head and pulling it towards your only way of not becoming shark bait - an inflatable rubber inner tube.  Yep, that indeed qualifies one for a future Darwin Award.

Spent yesterday and today filling the limit on my dads boat. For the boat the last two days we have 7 lings. Smallest 26.5" and the biggest today right at 34". Has been a blast.

Today I caught a blue ling. I can't post pics, I am sitting on my dads boat with my boys in the marina.

What is it that they eat that makes their skin and meat blue.

Btw we had cheeks for dinner tonight. Absolutely delicious!!

Hopefully we can put another limit on the boat tomorrow for the last day. Great way to spent my Father's Day weekend!! Hanging with my sons and my dad :)
