Howdy all! This will be my first season trying deer hunting. And, in fact, will be my first try at going hunting without my dogs. Only been upland-ing it so far, and even that I am barely above a rookie level.
Months ago, we had picked-up the deer butchering information sheets that Stewart's Meats have, but apparently we stored it in a location so safe that we have no idea where it is.
:mor:
Anyone here happen to have that sheet and be willing to scan it at me? I already looked on their website, but didn't find it there. If necessary, I can swing by them tomorrow, but would love to avoid it since I want to go in exactly the opposite direction all day tomorrow to 1. hunt Grouse and 2. check on the couple areas I scouted earlier to try for my first deer hunt. I have no illusions of any deer being stupid enough to run into a bullet I have fired, but I should be prepared at the least, ya' know? Or maybe have something to read while out there.
I wish everyone luck! And as a co-worker said to me today upon hearing I was trying deer this weekend, "Git' out there and kill some meat!"
And i have no idea what this emoticon is for, but I can't avoid using it - just too cool!
:llam:
Thanks much in advance!

Holy cow, I think this is the 4th first post I have seen today. :hello: Welcome to the site. FWIW, I have heard too many bad things to ever take my game to them. If you need so me close to there that does good work PM me.
-
DO NOT take your game to Stewarts! The best place around is Heritage Meats in Rochester. Tracy (the owner) is a long time hunter/butcher and knows how to do wild game well. Best of all, no health violations, unlike Stewarts.

I have taken game there before and will never do it again.

We took our deer to them last year to have sausage made. No real complaints other than some of it was pretty dry. Will probably go to Johnsons this year after tasting some of Jeremiahs stuff and reading all the stuff on here.

Stewarts a big neg for me.I cut my own meat.but I really like mt views pepperoni ,I havent made my own pepperoni .and they do my bears and no complaints here, they are a little spendy.

don't waste precious game by taking it to Stewarts... :'( :bdid:

I'm not sure but I don't think Clumber was planning on taking a deer to Stewarts, just wanted information on how to butcher it. I think. :dunno:

I like Tom Dick and Harry's in Yelm. I have been friend with the owner for about 23 years.

Another thumbs up for heritage meats in rochester, price was outstanding compared to other places i've been and they did a great job.
-
Welcome to the site! Kudos for Heritage meats, they make some good breakfast sausage also!

Wow all, THANK you for the info! Honestly, I simply didn't know of anywhere else to take a deer. :dunno: We were there a few months ago and saw the instruction sheet on how to prep deer brought in to them and with prices and such, so we grabbed it... and then apparently lost it. Starting to think that was a good thing!
If I have one to take this year, lol, I will definitely take it to the one in Rochester - especially since the person's name is perfect. lol
If someone has a link or advice for how butchers prefer the game to be brought into them, that would be great. We'll give Heritage a call too, in case they have some instructions. Such as - do I have to figure out how to skin it, will they save the topskull and antlers for me, do I hang it at home a few days first, or take it directly to them... that sort of stuff.
Newbie in spades, here. And my spouse and I both grew up in anti-gun and barely tolerant of hunting families, so we didn't learn any of the basic stuff growing up, so are trying to drink from that fire hose as deeply as possible here in late 30s. (Ok, I hit 40 this year, but you know...) We caught on to the bird hunting pretty quickly, though I suspect that has more to do with our dogs being friggin' awesome than any commentary on our abilities. :P So please forgive stupid questions. You are welcome to LYAO at me, though joke will be on you since I will be laughing at me too!
Luck to everyone! Stay safe and get some meat!
MANY thanks!

HOLY COW!
I just started to check out that website recommended - askthemeatman - and my brain is full! Actually, I need to stop reading and get out to check a couple of my spots and then hit Sunbird for some last-minute stuff. THANK YOU! Tons of info!!!

By the way, Tracy at Heritage Meats makes the BEST bacon! I take all my beef to him and have for years.
-
I should add that I appreciate the optimistic vibes abounding that I may actually have a reason to go to Heritage aside from picking up some nice ribeyes. ;-)

i have NEVER had a bad exp from stewarts and they by FAR have the best jerky known to man. all my friends take their meat there and havent had a problem at all.

Have you ever taken a game animal there yourself? I thought you were a "NEW" hunter?
-
Hey all, we dropped in at Heritage Meats today but they told us that they are not accepting any "bone in" deer this year. We were in the Stewarts area today so swung in for some pig ears for our hard-working pheasant chasers on the way home, and picked up another copy of the deer info sheet that I was asking about originally in this post. (I scanned it this time so I can't lose it again, just in case)
So, where else is a good place to take a deer around here in the very unlikely event that I get one this year?
Thanks~

Steve, don't be saying that. I won't take my game meat there but I love the Alder smoked jerky. It has to be ok, it has to be ok, it has to be ok. :chuckle:
