Trapperguy22 and I have been doing a lot of trap building. Here's a pic of some almost finished collapsible traps. My hands are killing me already and we have just started.
-
what is the size? They look small.
-
6x8x22 and 6x8x24. For rats.
-
While you're at it, mix in a couple of these designs. My multiple catch rates increased dramatically with the double wides with the 2" upper extension and the singles with the extension. :twocents:

We made 10 double wides. But I didnt take a pic. What's the extension?

The trap with the rats in it is 6"w x8" tall. The door is 6x6 so when the rat bites the top of the cage (which they almost always do) there is still room for another rat to push in under the first one. All of the traps I make now are this style because of how well they have trapped. My double wides have this also.

I see now.

I get the 2" extension making it a 6"x8", but wouldn't a 3" extension, 6"x9", make it easier for a rat to push through? I have never built a trap, but plan to after deployment, and I'm thinking if 2" works, then 3" would be just as easy, if not easier for rats to push in.

I imagine it would make it easier still. However I don't think it's very necessary.
I am no master at muskrat trapping but I've caught several hundred in this setup and I've had up to eight in a "double wide" with only a 2" dropdown.
I agree with 3Nails, those "double wide" traps are great for bottom edge sets and will catch mink too. Sometimes it's hard to pull a cold mink that's up to his hips in the 1x2" wire though.

I have used both and think both the collapsible and the double wide have their place. If you have wide run close to the truck the double wides work good. If you are walking to a pond a ways you can carry two dozen of the collapsibles easily and if it is a wide run you can put two traps side by side. As for the bite bars I have caught them in both and multiples in both so I am not sure.

I build all of the traps shown and more I build a double wide with the "bite bars" and also in a folding version, In a folding you cannot have a "bite bar" unless you want to carry wire or zip ties to secure it across the front.
