There was some successful elk hunters recently. They are even allowed to use dogs to track down an animal after it is shot. It is a 10.00 application fee with no preference points, just your name thrown into the hat for the drawing.
Here are a few pictures from the check station in KENTUCKY

Thats a nice bull. Thats an easy way to move him from truck to another I guess :yike:
-
According to the report I saw, the 7x6 was shot by a 16 yr. old... he will never look at a whitetail the same way again. :chuckle:
-
Its a pretty big deal down here. Lots of 340+ class bulls taken this year from what i heard.
-
Some of the elk they transplanted in Kentucky have moved into Virginia, which according to the game regs can be taken on your normal deer tag.
-
they use dogs to track and flush everything over here.
nice bull

The Elk in Kentucky are doing quite well. They are well ahead of population projections. The elk are in a 16 county elk zone that is made up of National Forest and reclaimed strip mining areas. Any elk outside of this zone can be harvested with and tagged with a deer tag.
There was one elk brought in that green scored 395. All of the ones I saw were very nice bulls.
Our dog group had the opportunity to bloodtrack for the opening weekend. We will be going back for the cow hunt in December. Just trying to do a little PR while assisting the hunters. Seems people have forgotten how efficient a trained dog is at finding wounded game. Of the four tracks we worked we found two of the elk. Both were still alive.
Pretty cool seeing elk thrive in the East. You won't find a nicer group than the Kentucky game and fish officials. They are proud of their accomplishment.

Forrest,
Imagine my surprise while surfing the washington forum to see a picture of a draht in the background! Very cool that you guys can blood track down there, its illegal here in washington. I just ran my first pup in his hzp two weeks ago and am having a blast!

next bull I shoot, I'm going to Lew Rents and getting me one of those "elk picker uppers" for a day. Are pack frames illegal in KY?
-
Not illegal but rednecks like toys. The elk picker upper is actually used to weigh the elk at the central check station at, of all places , the Wal-Mart parking lot!
It's pretty neat, all of the game wardens have winches mounted behind the cabs of their trucks to help the hunters with their elk. some do pack with a frame or horses because their is no other way. Believe it or not some of these areas are as steep as anything you find in the West.
One of the problems they were having was guys used to shooting whitetail thinking that they had missed when an elk did not fall over immediately after the shot. this led to problems.
Abe,
You're lucky living in Washington, I got my first exposure to DD's when I lived there in the 80's. I've been trying to get back there ever since I left.

There was a show just recently on Elk Chronicles that was highlighting the elk and the reintroduction into Kentucky and the stip mining areas. Rocky Mt. Elk foundation sure has down a world of work for the introduction of elk on the east coast. Thanks for posting the pics.

Pennsylvania has a good herd in the central part of the state. They have a hunting season, draw only for a few tags. They too are putting out some wopper bulls. Any idea how many tags are issued in Kentucky?
-
100 bull tags and 300 Cow tags.
-
How many put in for those tags?
