Title: Long range optic set-ups
Post by: mountainman on June 11, 2013, 02:15:25 PM
I know many here on HW are serious as I am to the long range shooting gig. Just curious as to what others here shoot on top of their long range guns for optics, rings and bases? how do you rig your 1000 yard and farther guns?? I run Vortex Razors and PST's, Nightforce scopes, Warne or Nightforce for the bases, all at 20 moa, and Vortex or Nightforce rings. Even post some photos of your favorite rigs!

NF and Schmidt & Benders on the fleet.  Vectronix for rangefinders.  40 MOA Rails on the Edges, 20 MOA on all the rest.  NF and Seekins rings.

How do you like Vortex? Do they offer custom turrets. Would love a NF for my new long range gun but not sure if I can justify the $ to the loan officer ( wife). :chuckle: Was thinking of the Vortex pst, a Leopold VX3LR or possibly a Leopold built buy Greybull Precission. Right now mines just sporting a Burris I pulled off another rifle to get trigger time. Also what do you gain by going to 20 moa bases over standard.

Yup.....still have the build sheet for it in the files.  Glad you are having fun with it.

Yep, always a good idea to get the blessing first!
Yes, love the Vortex line. The PST can be had with custom turrets, and several reticle options! Sturdy scope with amazing warranty and service. By going 20 moa (or 40 moa as Rbros), you are in effect tilting the scope so as too be able to use more of your scopes adjustment with, say, a 100 yard zero. if your scope has, say, 100 minutes of adjusment top to bottom, but your adjustment for a 100 yard zero puts the adjustment dead center..that woul only leave you with 50 minutes of adjustment, not enough for longer shooting. Hope this explains it as simply as I could?

NF scopes on all guns that will shoot that far and the ones that I've had awhile have NF rings and rails but anything that has been built in the last few years has Near Mfg. rings.  Certainly nothing wrong with NF rings and rails but Near Mfg. is the BEST I've ever used and Richard Near is excellent to work with.

Vortex viper 6.5x20x50 30mm with badger ordinance scope rings and 20moa base.  The scope is on the bottom of the spectrum in cost but for the price I could not be happier.  I would like to upgrade to the viper pst with zero stop in the future but for now this is working great.

.  Thats good to hear on the Vortex turrets. That makes sense for having more adjustment in the scope by going to the MOA bases. Does using the MOA bases have any affect on your cheek weld. I notice a lot of your guy's setups have adjustable stocks for that.I just finished this build and went with a non adjustable stock from McMillan ..

Every setup can be different. With bigger objectives and tubes, the scope is mounted higher then a smaller diameter scope would be. Which isn't a bad thing. You get a few extra yards, apples to apples, by having a little higher setup. It lengthens you point blank range. I shoot only from the prone, not from a bench, to closely mimic a hunting situation, and with my not-so-young neck vertebrae, I need that cheek piece to get proper cheek weld on the gun.

When you set up your rilfe from an optics perspective is it easier to have a base between 20 and 30 and the scope start out being bottomed out?

Can some one explain that for me?

Or as close to it. That way you have the full adjustment range for the long shot. Many variables, like stated above including how much adjustment your scope has. Most of mine have 125 MOA built into them. Most have quite a bit less

Some will mount Scopes on their " long range" guns with this limited adjustment in MOA scope, set them in standard bases. They are truly limiting themselves and their rifles by so little dial up ....

When I first started dabbling in this, I was one of the self limiters . . .  :chuckle:  I can only get dialed up to I think 810 or so before I'm topped out.  One of these days I'll bite the bullet again and get a new set-up. Torn between .300 RUM and one of the .338 calibers. . . I really like the thought of Bergers 300 gr. bullet for the .338!  Also love Vortex optics, that Razor HD look AWESOME! One of these days when I have 4k to spare I might pull the trigger . . .  :'(

The vortex Razor and the NightForce...  I was talking to a person on this site (Will not name him) which he said that the NightForce has solid clicks on the dials but the vortex seamed to be mushy.

Can anyone comment on that?

They seem to be similar in price...

Vortex is very positive click, a much simpler zero stop set-up, and a larger solid tube for light and adjustment capability. Some people are chevy, some are ford, and some are pretty opinionated about it. And some just make comments , yet do not own either...a person needs to research and not take opinions on this.

In there a difference between the two for warrantee perspective?

I like the 35mm tube diameter for sure.

Lifetime transferable with Vortex. So, you can buy it, give it to a buddy, he can run over it with his truck, send it in and get a free scope. Cant beat that! I take it one step further.. you buy from my shop, you bring the damaged scope to me and I will hand you a new scope on the spot. :-) thats how much I stand behind their product

125 MOA is pretty great. My leupolds I think have 90 moa if I remember correctly on the vx3 LR's. Is the 125 only on the viper or which all models have 125 moa?

I gotcha. I just started playing with there scopes. I have 2 so far but hard for me to step away from leupold. They have done all I have asked. I have the vortex on a 223 semi and 300 blk testing to see how they hold up before dropping more on the high end stuff. Glad I found out that the viper only has 65 moa and will look to the razor if I want to go into there higher end stuff.
