Title: Got Cancer?
Post by: ICEMAN on June 11, 2013, 10:01:01 PM
Got Cancer? I do.

You may have noticed that I have not been around quite as much lately....

I will try to make this short.

On November 12th, I had my left hip replaced. Then, three weeks later on December 3rd I had my right hip replaced. Full replacements, all metal hips.... Things were going great. I had been having some issues swallowing certain foods since September. It got progressively worse through the winter. By January, my doctor had me on an antacid similar to prilosec. It did not help. Doctor thought I was experiencing GERD, major acid reflux issues. I then went in for a gastroentrology consult, then was scoped (endoscopy) on February 2nd. The doctor immediately let us know that I had cancer. Esophageal cancer, possibly the result of prolonged acid reflux. I would not have considered myself as suffering from acid reflux but only occasionally, only when I ate too close to bed time...etc...

After further testing, I was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. This is an ugly cancer that kills a lot of people.

I started Chemo and Radiation Therapy in March. 6 weeks of Chemo and 28 occasions of radiaton.

My body responded very very well to the treatment.

My last PET scan (radioactive isotope injected) revealed that my cancer was mostly gone/inactive. Just a slight bit of radioactivity at my cancer site, but on the other hand, I just had intensive radiation over the last month....

I am now scheduled for a complete removal of my esophagus to occur next Tuesday the 18th. They will re-position my stomache into a long tube, to replace the esophagus.  8-10hr operation on the table. 8-10 day hospital stay. Then many weeks recovery at home. Feeding tube for the long haul until many weeks later when I can finally injest enough calories to maintain body weight.

Recently, I can eat well. After treatment, I have done well. I have one week to get ready for surgery. My energy is coming back from Chemo. My hair has come back, alot different, but coming in...

My goal is to continue to show my kids how to beat cancer. I am positive, and vigorous. I do not kill easy.

What a life changer this road has been since February. My wife has been my rock. My kids my inspiration. I have continued to work and have not missed but a few days since diagnosis. I am about ready to be away from work for 6 plus weeks? Not exactly sure. I know I will want to get back as soon as I can....

I will try to check in here as often as I can. I do so enjoy this place and my friends here.

Not really sure why I am posting this. We all love attention, but I feel like I owe an explanation for not being around and participating so much lately. I know...stupid...

Anyway, If any of you guys or gals have GERD, or swallowing issues, get it checked out. Treat it seriously.

Hi Iceman,
Glad to hear your treatment has been going well and you are responding positively to it.  I can relate to you, I just turned 50 this year and started having stomach pains in late March, and after going to the doctor and specialists for a month for testing I found out I have Stage 2 Pancreatic Cancer, which is the 4th leading killer of all the cancers.  to say I was shocked was a understatement, I have always been healthy as a horse, I backpack and hunt the backcountry like a 20 year old every year.  I am on my 2nd round of chemo for 6 months (will get done right after extended buck), and then after a 3 week break will have surgery to remove half of the pancreas in early December, followed by a 6-8 week recovery, and then radiation and chemo for 6 weeks.  Hopefully by April 2014 I will be cured.  They caught it early and I meet all of the medical criteria to be "resectible" or treatable, which I feel very fortunate to be in the lucky 15% right off the bat.  I have radically upped my workout routine and my diet, and after discussions with my brother, I went for it and put in for my normal Backcountry elk draw choices.  I have a good group of friends that will help me pack in and out, so if I draw a good tag it will literally be the hunt of a lifetime.

My thoughts and prayers with you and your family.  let me know how you are doing.

Todd

In thinking back to a time when my 10yo nephew Joshua Holm was battling an aggressive form of liver cancer and when coming on here to post updates and such I can remember you being extremely sensitive and supportive and also willing to step up and assist in any way shape or form and I assure you my friend I am there, If there is anything I can do to make this easier for you and your family please just say the word.

If there is anyone I would expect to beat something like this its you, you have a GREAT attitude and ethic and you will come out on the other end completely free of cancer and looking at this ugly thing in the rearview mirror giving it one of these...  (https://hunting-washington.com/smf/MGalleryItem.php?id=8226)

My dad was diagnosed with cancer and given 6 months to live by the Doctor.  That was back in May of 2000 and he is still kicking!  He is 77 years old and we did our second Africa trip back in October of last year and that is after not only all the cancer treatments, but a double knee replacment and an ankle replacement.

Grace of God is a wonderful thing.  Attitude is key.  Keep up the good fight, it works.

Sorry to hear, Iceman! My thoughts are with you!

Hopefully many will take this lesson to heart. This is one of the (if not the) fastest growing cancers (rate of new diagnosis). People think of heartburn as an inconvenience, but years of it can do a great deal of damage to the esophagus. I was lucky...when in my teens I had reflux constantly. Dr. put me on meds and when I said it wasn't helping he called me a liar and actually took me off the meds. Couple years and new doctor later, mentioned it again. They did a test and discovered I was being serious. Number of tests later they discovered I was experiencing the start of Barrett's Esophagus (pre-cancerous condition from the acid changing the esophagus) due to no "flap" at the top of the stomach. Had surgery when I was 17 and have done pretty well since. Still have issues, but not as bad and occasionally go in for endoscopies.

Bottom line, if you experience heartburn often (even if your on meds and it doesn't burn, but you can feel it in your throat) and/or have trouble swallowing (bread and meat can be difficult for me at times), be sure to let your doctor know!

Ice - stay strong and see you in the woods!

my prayers go out to ya! This video is the Rick Simpson story, he treated himself and survived this nasty disease. GODspeed man! and good luck! Im no doctor, but try to eat as many organic fruits and vegges as possible, drink lots of spring water, and atleast TRY bathing that throat in a constant low dose of THC oil and see how you feel. When THC is in direct contact with cancer cells, IT KILLS THEM! Dont smoke it though of course! Also, stay away from elctro-magnetic radiation as much as possible. (like cell phones and laptops)

I have seen to much cancer in my life already.... You will beat this, and it will limp away with its tail between its legs.  You are a strong person and have a good outlook.  Remember to eat fresh foods, drink lots of clean water and laugh often.

Amazing to read everyone's posts.

Six months ago cancer seldom crossed my mind, didn't know of anyone close to me who had it. Never seen it in my family. Since then, and every week I meet folks who have suffered the loss of loved ones, others who have gone through treatment, and a few who have just been diagnosed.

The good news is that this is the best time to get diagnosed and treated. Better now than in years passed. In my case, my group health team along with Seattle Cancer Care Alliance took on my plight as though it were theirs. They attacked it, and led me. I could hot imagine a better team helping me.

Anyway, thanks again. My wife has pledged to come here and post an update or two after surgery etc... So you may get an Icewife post or two...  :chuckle:  Her name is Kathi. You guys may like her, she has packed out deer and elk with me over the years and is a big fan of this place and what goes on here.   She understands alot of you already... :chuckle:

I will remain positive and cocky about this. I am ready for surgery and want nothing more than to get on with it, get it past me and get on with full recovery. I have a lot of stuff to do this summer, fall, winter, next spring.  :IBCOOL:

You know Ice, respect is a difficult thing to build. Everyone I have ever come into contact with throughout life starts off with a certain amount. Some loose it quickly. Sometimes it takes time to see through a false image and those slowly fall off the scale. Most folks stay at the same wonderful spot they were given in the first place where they are a joy to interact with. But for one to build respect in my book of life is not easy. It requires true character. One who is conscious of his actions, words, and deeds and is not easily sidetract by other opinions or false hopes.  Over the years of getting to know you in this cyber world. I must say that you have built respect in a lot of ways. You are a great father to your children, you are and outdoorsman, and you are great with words of wisdom ( If we tally it up I bet you have the most "yeah that" posted to your comments in all of hunt-wa).

Take care of what you must for now and when you have recovered. Send me a pm. I'll be happy to take you and yours out for dinner.

keep up the good fight especially for your kids...

I have been doing some reading and since this is about cancer i thought i'd bring it up. Basically one of the theories about how cancer forms is by our bodies not being alkaline enough. Our diet today consists of things that are more acidic on a daily basis. Things like red meat, coke, alcohol, and other food choices cause our body to become more acidic. 7.4 PH is about normal (blood ph) and lower PH levels help.

One of the key health problems that most people have is that are dehydrated, and don't drink enough fluid to flush their system.
It seems that there are pushing slightly alkaline water to solve this problem, however it would also seem that re-hydrating with good old fashioned water and eating foods that are not massively acidic.

What are your thoughts on this issue? Anyone...

Post by: pens fan on June 16, 2013, 12:41:01 AM
Prevention is a key, but its not the whole answer.

Everyone has cancer. Not everyone's body can recognize it, thus does not fight it.
One of my nurses explained it to me this way:
Its like having an ant hill outside your house. The ants dont bother you, and you might kill a couple in your house onc in a while. But they build a nest somewhere you dont know about. They grow unknowingly. Then, all of a sudden, theres ants causing problems. If caught early enough, and exterminator can kill the nest quickly. But not all the ants will die. They may move to another spot, and grow their, unbeknownst to you. Only constant vigilance will keep them from spreading.
Title: Re: Got Cancer?
Post by: pens fan on June 16, 2013, 12:49:33 AM
Killing an ants nest and killing off cancer has the same principles.
You can blow up a nest, killing thousands of ants, but alot suvive and spread to various places. You can spray them, but that kills mostly the ones on the surface, and maybe some will.die on the nest, but they will build.a.tolerance to the spray. You can dig out and remove the nest, but still, some may survive and return. You can hit them with a long term treatment, but only controls a few and takes time.
So, what doctors do is a stratgy of all combined methods.
Dig it out, blow it up (scatter), spray, and hit them with a long term treatment. Radiation and surgery and chemo does all this. Its invasive, painful, and creates long term problems.
But the ants go away mostly and are controlled.

Title: Re: Got Cancer?
Post by: pens fan on June 16, 2013, 12:54:07 AM
You can also do all you can to prevent the ants from getting into the house in the first place. Dont give them reason to.

I've also read this.  I've tested rain water, tap water and bottled spring water and found them to be slightly to very alkaline. Filtered water around neutral and filtered bottle water ( drinking water) to be acid.

Surgery Cancelled for a while.

Not sure what happened exactly, but we took a call this morning 30 minutes before we left for surgery. Hospital surgery team advising me that the surgery was cancelled, for me to contact my surgeons office when they open.

I called, they had no idea yet what had occurred.

After many other calls, it appears my surgeon either had a medical emergency himself, or his loved one. Prayers either way.

Nobody to blame.

They are giving me an emergency referral to across town, different surgeon. I bet this adds over a month to getting my surgery...

So, you guys are stuck with me for a bit longer.....  :chuckle:

Hey Ice, keep fighting!  This is a tough one but you can beat it!

Also, Yes, I do have cancer in my life.  My wife was diagnosed with Stage IIIc Ovarian cancer in Sept. 2011 (only 48 years old).  Went thru debulking surgery and six months of chemo from Oct to March 2012.  Everything seemed to be going well until March of this year.  Cancer was back worse than before (i.e., Stage IV).  Surgery is not an option as it's too diffuse throughout abdomen, so they restarted chemo again in late March to arrest the progression.  She just had her 4th cycle of six cycles of chemo treatment.  CA-125 number have dropped again to normal levels.  But, recurrent stage IV Ovarian cancer has about a 5% survival rate after five years.  Dr.'s prognosis is only one to three years at most.  So, after the six regular cycles of chemo, they plan to do monthly maintenance chemo treatment until progression is noted again.

The reason I mention my situation is that Ovarian cancer is the third most deadly cancer in the world for women!  It's insidiuos in that most of the symptoms are similar to monthly female cycle issues, change of life issues as women age, etc. (abdominal pain, cramping, bloating, hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal bleeding, pain during sex, etc.), so it usually isn't diagnosed until it's in the advanced stages (i.e., Stage III or IV).  If it's caught by Stage II, survival periods and chance of full remission are much higher (40 to 50%).  Even if your wife's family has no history of cancer (which my wife's doesn't), do not ignore these persistent symptoms.  A simple CA-125 blood test or an abdominal scan much earlier could have saved my wife's life!  Also, for women who have never had children (like my wife), the rate of occurence is 50% greater than those who have had at least one child.

Like anything else in life, be your own best advocate.  If you aren't getting relief or satisfaction from the medical diagnosis and treatment you are currently receiving, tell the Dr. to do CA-125 blood test or arrange for an abdominal scan to rule out Ovarian cancer!  Get the lady's in your life tested.

Take care, and keep fighting Ice!

ET

I don't know what kind of time frame you have been working with Ice. Maybe this delay is a good thing. It least from where I sit it seems kind of like sudden and over night news. My dad had the same thing you have. I took him to chemo and radiation for 5 months prior to the surgery. The surgery was a last resort if the chemo and radiation failed. I took him to the cancer treatment center there in Spokane.  :twocents:

Iceman,  ........... Good luck.  In 2005 myself and two co-workers were diagnosed with cancer. Myself, pancreas cancer my buddy Rodger, Throat cancer and Deloy had cancer thru out his entire body. I was out of work for 3 months, minus half my pancreas, my spleen and a foot or so of intestines. Rodger was out a year and came back minus his voice and has to feed himself with a syringe in a fitting in his stomach. Deloy died. Rodger is retiring July 31. Cancer is a life changer. I was supposed to die and I've been working 10 hours a day since I came back to work 8 years ago, now. I have faith in you, your a smart, tough guy. Just keep putting one foot in front of the other and pretty soon your thru the worst of it. If theres anything I can do PM me.

Ice, get that Magnesium stuff COLD. Just above freezing. Put it in the freezer a hour before you drink it. And remember your pain button........ They'll have a little switch that hangs from your shoulder so you can control your own pain medication. Keep up on it. It's not so bad if you keep up on it but once the pain gets on top of you it's real hard to get it back in control......I never did have much pain but this nurse kept walking by saying " Hit your pain button, dear". Just be careful with bread and meat when you're back to eating, those can be difficult to swallow! Lol, stay away from PB&J sandwiches too. Tied eating one when I was doing a 24-hour ph test (tube down throat) and it got caught, about choked me. :chuckle:

I'm thinking of you. I hope the temporary post-surgery dietary restrictions are the worst part of it for you! At least you don't have a bunch of holidays to contend with (my reflux surgery was the Monday before thanksgiving. Was in hospital drinking through a straw on thanksgiving, unable to eat solids for my birthday, and barely able to eat solids by Christmas).

You helped me with my hip surgery, let me know if you need anything with this...

Ice I will be thinking of you. My Throat Cancer was different from yours, it hand not invaded except the back of the Tongue. The radiation was what was rough on me. Thinks the worst sunburn you ever had but inside the throat. They said they got it all and no need for surgery.. My voice is a little raspy now, some things are tough to swallow. But I'm still causing hate and discontent, and you will too. Good Energy is flowing

Mrs. Iceman here.   Just got home with our daughter after spending the day at the hospital.   Iceman checked in at 5am.  Surgery started at 7:30 am and lasted 8 hours.  We were able to see him briefly at about 6:30 pm.   The Dr told me he took 1/3 of his stomach and about 2/3 of the esophagus.  They were trying to get his pain under control.  He was able to talk to us a little but due to the sedation and meds he would fall asleep frequently during any conversation.   He finally encouraged me to leave and asked that I send an update as well as thank you all again for your support, well wishes and prayers.

Waking up is 80% of the battle.  I remember wanting to be left alone to just ...... float...... Your kinda semiconscious with people checking your vitals and jabbing you with needles and activity around, then just as you start to float a family member talks to you......Your drugged out to the max, you can't really tell what condition you are in, you can't  think, your fear is gone...... but that warm fuzzy floating.  I'm pulling for ya, Ice.

Mrs. Iceman here again.  Tuesday (day after the surgery) Ice was still heavily medicated and a lot of fun to try to converse with.  The nursing staff got him up and had him walking around the ICU unit a few times and even surprised them by going an extra lap each time.   Today, he was very tired and having difficulty getting good sleep.  Before I went home, he was experiencing irregular heartrate which the staff explained sometimes happens after major surgery.  By the time I made it to his parents' home to pick up our daughter, the nurse called me to inform me that he was having more problems with his heartrate and they were doing labs and putting in a pic line.  They put Iceman on the phone and he  assured me he is doing fine and not to worry or to drive back tonight.  He actually sounded better tonight on the phone.  Thank you for the well wishes, I have been sharing them with him.  Hope to get him on the lap top or tablet in a few days when he moves out of the ICU and to a regular room, but that may be a few days.
Thanks again,
Iceman's family.

At home, finally.   (Actually yesterday at 1pm..)

Not sure the technical term, but I will say it: Cancer Free.

I came home yesterday afternoon. Very sore. Half of the robotic surgery they intended to use, did not work and they basically filleted me open to be able to deflate my lung and to get at and remove my diseased esophagus. They recreated an esophagus for me out of my stomach and pulled the whole magilla up to the top remaining portion of my esophagus.

Ten days later after my July 1st surgery, I left the hospital early, and am at home.

During most of my stay, I had 11 tubes into my body and 7 full time sensor lines.

Two tubes into my nose, one for oxygen, one down the esophagus for new esophagus alignment and stomach drainage.

Two chest side drains below surgery sites...

One below the lung drain.

One incoming narcotic pain med line.

A central line (PIC line) going to the heart.

An existing power port line access, also going to the heart.

Occasional IV line as my PIC line and Port both seem to like to grow over after a days use... ( they call me a "fast healer" )

Bladder catheter.

Feeding tube installed into my stomach.

Five wires to the chest for heart telemetry.

Full time blood exygen sensor line.

Full time blood pressure cuff.

I am now home with  only a stomache feeding tube, and a port line at my shoulder... much better.

I have to feed myself through a food pump right now almost 24hrs/7dys..... I have been just authorized to swallow up to 8 clear fluid ounces every hour.

After much more healing, I will slowly slide into more actual food down the gullet and less costly recovery formula pumped straight in....

EDIT:      Thank you all for your support and prayers!

Here is my weekly recap....

Met with surgeon this week, he was very impressed with progress. No infections anywhere, no pnuemonia...

Surgeon authorized me to eat more solid type foods starting this week. I can now eat more solid food. A lot of items off my list still, but nice to be able to taste foods.

I still have a cough related to reinflating my collapsed lung from surgery. This causes your guts to put the squeeze on your chest, chest squeezes the new esopho-stomach and will eject my last eaten if I am coughing hard. Irritating.

Pain. Still a ton of pain. Back pain. Related to the ribs they had to fracture to get into my ribcage for the surgery. Cannot wait for this to go away. For now, it is pretty serious narcotic pain meds every four hours. I KNOW if I went five hours.... 3.5 to 4hrs is the max I want between doses.

Sleep. Sleep is obtained in the living room, reclining couch. Maybe 4 hours at a time, then the pain wakes me for now. In the future, I will need an adjustable bed, IE: sleep at an incline. The surgery causes your stomach acid to be close to the top....no much ability to shut it off like you normal guys. Folks with this type surgery are wary to lay flat ever again, without fear of acid reflux, just due to the physics of the surgery. This sucks.

Met with Oncologist doctor this week, sort of depressing meeting. They found no new cancer from my biopsy from surgery. But, in her opionion, cancer will return somewhere later, at some time. This is how cancer goes. Cancer will be haunting me, my wife, my kids forever it sounds. I get very emotional thinking about this as I want to be there for my wife and kids.

My plan.

Keep increasing amount of normal soft foods so I can sometime in the future remove the feeding tube.

Get off the pain meds as my ribs heal more.

Get down to the most raw honest emotional baseline with my wife and kids. Love more, argue or fight less.

Work constantly to prepare my family for the inevitable loss, weather it be five years or fifteen.

You are in my thoughts and prayers Ice.  I've lost too many friends and relatives (including my 35 yr old son 2 years ago) to this awful disease.   I know how tough this battle is, but realize you are strong and fighting the good fight and can beat this thing!  My best to you and yours ....

Yeah, Iceman, i know the feeling worrying about it raising its ugly head again. Take care of your liver. Thats a favorite hidey-hole. The good news is, the longer you wait it out, the more chance of better treatments and possibly a cure.
Love those kids, love that wife.

37 or so days since surgery.

Still on the feeding tube at night. Doctors moved me off of it and encourage me to eat as much as I can during the day. The goal is to eat all my calories normally by mouth, then the tube feeder gets removed.

Still on a bit of pain meds each day.

Not quite ready to head back to work yet. Once I am off the prescription pain meds I would like to atleast go back to work for half days to see how it goes.

There still is this irritating cough. I googled it, and it seems to be prevalent for many esophagael cancer subjects. Must have something to do with the lung which was deflated out of the way for surgery. When I cough hard, it pounds on my new esophagus/stomache and has a tendency to kick up your last eaten food. Really not excited about this happening at work since you get a bit of upchuck down your shirt if you don't have a barf bag handy.

All in all, feeling better each day. Still tired, still working on getting my energy reserves back. Still losing weight...so the lack of energy is probably also related to just not getting enough calories on a given day.

During recovery, it has been nice to check in to hunt-wa to see what you guys are doing around the state. Can't wait to get strong enough to hike a mile or dig a clam...

Later!

Keep us posted Ice. This hits home for me and frankly scares the crap outta me. I am only 38 and have been suffering from severe GERD for 5 years. My dr. has tried every medication known. Nothing seems to stop it. He finally told me I will probably be on medication for the rest of my life. I have to get a scope done every year now. Last year I was already at a stage 2 esophegal erosion. Which he said is usually someone in their 50's or later. Haven't done the scope yet this year. (no insurance)

Under 2 months since surgery and returned to work this Monday to an office buried in balloons, streamers and confetti. They got me good!

I am working half days till I know I can take a whole day. Still a bit of back pain and had an infection scare last week at my feeding tube site. Got that under control. I am eating most all my calories via mouth, but like the tube for meds since I still toss cookies if I have a coughing fit.

So good to be returning to work. There is only so much tv watching I can take.

Life is good!

I think it's amazing that you are back to work already.  That's got to be the best therapy for an ornery old cuss -- just getting back into the thick of things.  When you said you came down with cancer, I raised started getting serious about exercising after dinner & I even raise up the head of our bed, since I sometimes get what you had.  Trying not to eat so late also.  It's nothing short of a miracle that you're this far along with your recovery & getting back to good health.  Good luck at work.  Those short shifts sound just perfect to me!

I don't know you Ice, but I am so very personally happy for you as this very cancer touched my family about 5 years ago and took my dad. I love hearing about you recovery because I had all the confidence in the world my dad would come out the other side as I watched him go into surgery. I thought he was going to make it and he was all thumbs up. He was to old and week I guess. It really does mean a lot to me to know that this cancer is survivable because I think it is hereditary in my family from both my moms side and dads side. And that kind of scares my kids because we all have heartburn issues. So it just seems we will all have a turn in time. And the most important thing to know is you are back up and working and from what I can tell pretty much living a normal life again. I have a brother who needs to know that. He really has no understanding. That is my dimwit bro who doesn't like to hunt. I'm going to slam him every chance I get.   :chuckle:

Wonderful Ice!

Ice you hanging in there?  hope you are making improvements.  I know my son while still cancer free is never really cured he is 17 and has a lifetime of cancer screening every lump or bump has to be taken much more seriously, he is now at higher risk for other cancers because of the treatments to "cure" his cancer.  I hate cancer its a horrible awful thing to have to deal with.

All that said I think of you a lot and hope you are doing well, I look forward to seeing more pics of you and your kids out there hunting grouse, or snow camping, or any of the pursuits you seemed to have such a great time with your kids doing....oh and the stump pictures I loved those.....

Not to get too philosophical here, but….

A few years back a buddy of mine was diagnosed with ALS.  By the time they diagnosed him he had to use a walker to walk.  Within a few more months he was in a wheel chair.  A few months after that he was bed bound.  A few months after that he passed.  About 14 months after he and I did a scuba dive together, he was gone.

By the time he was diagnosed, it was too late for him to do most of the things he may have had on a bucket list.

This really got to me.  I now make it a point to not hesitate or leave things undone.  Who knows what the next year (or next week) may bring and that opportunity may be lost for the future.

Live life like you ain’t afraid to die.

Hey Ice,

It's only cause your fighting the battle my dad fought.

How ever I'm an old fart. I think I'm older than you. Not to sure. I'm 56. And I feel to damn young to be in this old body. I'm all crippled up, yet I have no fear of playing short stop and diving for a play. But yeah, I know that is just not going to happen ever again.

Some times my love and hankering to play with my chainsaw and ax and build a campfire to keep every body warm and cozy at night really nags at me. It ain't ever going to happen again.

I've been an absolute independent man. Taking care of those I love with all my passions and desires. I am dad and I am grandpa. I take care of those I love.

My body is all kinds of screwed up now. Differently than yours. But the truth is we are old now. I deal with my particular issues that cripple me up now for the rest of my life as you do. Just different old age problems.

And how do I deal with this?

I would really love to share and never spare a word. But my ability to write is kind of like Nill. Zilch. I didn't need to be such a linguistic and literary person to make a living when I was young. But those days are long gone.

Huaaa. I've been close to curtains 2 times now in the last five years. And I am very glad to be alive today. I just had a new granddaughter born last month.

I don't know what your life has been like and how old your kids are now.

But as I feel that cold wind blow, I become so much more thankful for my every breath. Something I couldn't do when I was young and strong and felt invincible.

I know how to tell my kids how wonderful and special they are. Better than when I was a young strong dad. My years feel so shortened now. But that doesn't bother me because I know my every breath is to live for my kids and their well being that was just a dream and adventure when I was in my 20's.

I could share more. But I am not a preacher. And I don't know where you are with that stuff.

You are not alone buddy. I think we all face this stuff. And there are so many challenges as many as there are individuals. I have peace. I hope you do too.

Here is a song I really liked when I was young. And now here I am old enough to see my kids grown up. Life has been good and I am thankful for my every day I have now. I shouldn't be here today. But I am.

Need to post.

It has been three months since I last posted here. Since then, I have had a scare in December. At years end, I had my 6 month CT scan to see how I was doing post treatment and surgery. As you can imagine, this is a stressfull CT scan, since it basically tells you how treatment worked, or not...

My December 30th scan revealed lymphnodes that were enlarged around my lungs. This concerns the professionals because it may indicate cancer returning..... but...I had been coughing alot in December, like a bad cold... Since the CT scan had warning signs, they put me on an antibiotic for a few weeks to assure if it was a cold, it went away....then they would wait and re-CT scan me...

I just had this wait and see CT scan on this Tuesday eve.

Wednesday my doctor called with good news. She relayed that my all the lymphs that had shown signs of enlargement were now all smaller a month later. She is convinced that the reason the lymphs were larger in December was because my body was naturally fighting off a cold. Now, with no cold, my lymphs are smaller than they were last year before treatment, and that they were reducing even post the dramatic surgery I had in July. We were overjoyed.

The point is, that there does not appear to be any cancer returning for now to my body. CT scan did not reveal anything. This is great news for me. I feel like I will be here for my wife and kids for a long while. How long, not sure, but a good bit. What a relief for now.

Next CT scan in 6 months.... Looking to get out and do some hunting before then.... :chuckle:

if I can semi hijack the thread for a moment id like to make a plug out there for the BRCA ("brack") test for women.  you may remember Angelina Jolie having a prophylactic double masectomy after the same test revealed that she was a high cancer risk. I work with a lady who had the same done and just found out today that another of our friends is about to undergo the same procedure.  removal of ovaries and/or breasts is obviously a lifechanging event that wont be taken lightly but its good to have the information and understand whats going on with your body. my wife wants to get the test done this year. check with your insurnace as some cover the test 100%.

I have hardly been on line at all since last December myself. My reason has been for joyous reasons. Our struggles are different but our hearts for our family are exactly the same. I have been over joyed with the blessings I have experience since last December. Life is so wonderful despite my obstacles for the very reasons we both have. Our Families. I feel you joy! Here. I'll share my little new one. She was born last Oct. This pic was December. And I have been able to walk with a cane to my neighborhood convenient store pretty consistently. I got to take this little one out to catch her first fish.  ;)

Hi Iceman,
Glad to hear your treatment has been going well and you are responding positively to it.

Todd

It was mentioned in another thread that Bluesdude "Todd" has lost his battle with pancreatic cancer.

This is the second hunter on this site that I am aware of who has passed away due to cancer, who had previously responded to my thread about my cancer. Wished me luck. First was fishseeker, then bluesdude. I pray I have not missed anyone else.  This is devastaing to me.

I think it's just about time to get together a Hunt-WA team for Relay for Life.

Fife-Milton-Edgewood will be holding their event on June 21-22 (I'll be there). http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?fr_id=57728 (http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?fr_id=57728)

While it may be a bit late this year, a team could always be started, then during the lull of winter next year, preparations could be made to add to the team and come up with fundraising ideas.  :twocents:

Hey Ice. I know it is no laughing matter. It's a fact of life a lot of us are going to face too soon our self's. It is nice to play the denial game before we get the news our self's. So may I ask, You can't beat this?

Jyerxa, so far so good for me. For now, no new cancer evidence since surgery a year ago July 1. Next CT scan is next month.

I am most often a positive person. But what is a bit discouraging is watching other guys my age, who are necessarily in better health than I, fall victim to it a year or two later. Others on this site have kids who are having repeat issues with cancer and are currently undergoing care, young healthy mid twenty year old kids fighting cancer. My doctor advised logically that you are never free of cancer after diagnosed, it usually comes back and gets you some other way...not always the original way of your first diagnosis.

Ice my son still fights the good fight...and I keep you in my thoughts as well.... It is scary I focus on the not scary I focus on each day it may be dumb and not the way one should do life but to me life is very tenuous and I am not going to waste today preparing for a tomorrow that may never come.....cancer changes things it changes them more than most will know until they deal with it in themselves a child or a loved one.....

I am sorry to bring this old thread to the top.

I am sitting at home today, finally decided to share with all of you on the site.

My cancer, which has been in remission for two years is back. The last few months have been really hard as my family has had to deal with the truth about what is happening in our lives.

Here is the deal. My cancer is back, it has metastasized. When esophageal cancer returns, your prognosis is bad. This is called distant recurrent cancer. For esophageal cancer that returns, there is no curative care. No cure.

Three months ago, I was told I have a 50% chance of being here in one year, a 0% chance of being here in two years.

Since this recurrent diagnosis, I restarted chemo therapy, but had to delay it once to deal with kidney stone surgeries (2), and then just recently a blood clot in my jugular, which I am worried about. On meds for the blood clot, and I will restart my Chemo therapy next week.

So as I sit here typing, I am in constant fear of not being here in the near future for my wife and kids. My son just got accepted to attend WSU in the fall. My daughter to start college the next fall.

The reason I share this with you all, is probably two fold. One, the first is a selfish need to share with my family and friends, and many of you are my friends. The second is to maybe share a gem or thought that somebody out there could possibly benefit from.

As I move forward, I am really worried about loose ends that I will leave behind. I dread the thought of my wife spending years trying to untangle or deal with projects I have started that I will (was) never be able to finish. Worried that we have not set aside enough money etc.... I will be leaving the world and my wife will be responsible for so much. This make me feel ill thinking about.

If I could do it all over again, I would have sought out medical attention earlier than I did. Being a guy, I think we all (or many of us) do avoid the doctor. I wish I would have addressed getting hip replacement surgery at a younger age, I feel self medicating for hip pain led to an acid reflux condition, which (untreated) allowed for the environment for esophageal cancer to begin. I wish I was not so "macho" (or stubborn/ bullheaded) to avoid professional medical care. I would probably not be typing this today if I was.

The return of cancer is a big enough scare, now I am having to also deal with this blood clot. I can't imagine going through my remaining time here after a stroke, trying to deal with chemo and my eventual demise to an infection or similar, all while not being able to communicate, or even move around well. I know the cancer is my end, say a prayer for me to avoid a loose blood clot.

Guys and gals, this cancer thing is bad and affects so many families. I have met other families along the way and it seldom ends well. Sometimes for while, but not for the majority of us.

I have already shared with the moderators and have let them know of a few weird requests that I may have for later. For now, I just want to I guess vent, and remind anyone who needs the reminder; Take care of your personal health, your family relies upon you. Get checked for cancer or other issues. Do not put this off!

Kevin.

Sorry to hear of this happening. Cancer is not anything to fool around with. I lost my uncle to bladder cancer in December and it was devastating. He was always a healthy person but he worked with a lot of chemicals as a technology teacher. The doctors said that was what got him. He lives in my heart everyday. Don't give up man! Keep fighting no matter what. You could be the guy that proves everything wrong and come out on top. No matter what you know your huntwa brothers and sisters will be here for you!

I sent this to a buddy yesterday....

Rocky Balboa: Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It is a very mean and nasty place and it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't how hard you're hit; it's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward. How much you can take, and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done.

Kevin....it sounds like you're winning to me

And in the words of Stewart Scott..

“When you die, it does not mean that you lose to cancer. You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and in the manner in which you live.”

It may seem odd, but I hope to see my end coming.  I don't want to die in my sleep.  I see the value in facing it, getting things in order and having the opportunity to say what I need to loved ones.  Prayers sent that God continues to give you strength to walk this walk.

Oh Kevin, I’m so sorry to hear this.  You’re a terrific guy and have touched many people’s lives.

We met at the 2nd amendment rally in Olympia, I guess it was over 2 years ago.  You saw on HW that I bought a new 10/22 and I was looking for the almost impossible to find ammo.  When we met at the rally, you handed me several boxes of .22s and wouldn’t take any money for them.

When my son was coming out here for the summer on his break from college, you saw I was looking for a boat to rent from a member.  It never worked out to use it, but you offered yours up for free!

I’m sure you’ve extended your helping hands to many others on this forum and beyond.  Your kindheartedness and generosity is something for which we should all strive.

Although briefly, I had the pleasure of meeting your wife and kids.  It was immediately obvious what an awesome family you have.  Please be comforted in knowing that your kids will always look to your teachings to guide their lives. You’ve laid down the foundation and when in times of uncertainty, they will ask “what Dad would do in this situation”.

Don’t try and overthink things at this time because you’ve done what needed to be done – that is, an exemplary job as husband and father.

I don’t know if you’re a Christian or not, but I know I can’t get by without our Lord, Jesus.  You and your family will be in our prayers.  As many others have said, please let us know what we can do - anything at all.

I’m very proud to know you,
Carl

Hi Kevin,

I'm so sorry to hear your cancer is back.  Keep fighting and living each moment.  I'm not sure I let you know, but I did very much appreciate our chats regarding my wife's cancer battle.  Not sure I've touched bases w/you lately, as I haven't been on the forum much.  But, I lost my wife to her three year battle with Ovarian cancer on October 16, 2014.  Not sure what I can do for you, but please let me know.

Take care,

Do not go gentle into that good night... rage against the dying of the light.

Cancer sucks, leaving those we love behind is worse.  The best we can hope for is that those we leave behind honor our memory, miss us every day and that our friends step in when we can no longer.

We've not met but I've enjoyed our dialogs and the insight you've posted on here.  If there is something I can do to help you or your family please let me know.  I'm a fair hand at technology, cook like a fiend, can do most farm construction and I can drive damn near anywhere.  Been through two degrees and navigated the higher ed waters so if you've got any questions or concerns or your son or daughter need a sounding board to bounce off of I'm available.

Best of luck and there is always hope while we still breath.

Do not go gentle into that good night... rage against the dying of the light.

Such a beautiful poem, I cannot leave it as a partial please  forgive me.

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Iceman we've never met or even talked that I can remember, but we are apart of the HuntWa family all the same. My family and I wish you only the best. You will be in our thoughts and prayers. You will beat this, and  I'm sure you'll do it with a smile on your face for the triumph you have made.

Stay strong and hunt on.

I did.  Bladder and Lung.  Lost the left upper lobe of my lung as a result.  Can't hump hills like I used to but I'm now in my 7th year of being a cancer survivor.  Having been there myself I can tell you to stay positive and do the things you enjoy to the best of your ability.  Don't dwell on the bad stuff, stay focused on the good.  Have faith.

Gentlemen, sorry I have been offline for so long. I apologize to all.

Treatment continues, I am on my 10th cycle of chemo therapy. Diagnosis is still terminal, but my last CT scan was not able to identify where my metastasized cancer was. My oncologist could not see it. This is a good sign for life extending care. It buys me some time. At some point my treatment will become ineffective and we will switch to another chemo plan, but it will assuredly be less effective. The body becomes resistant to chemo.  At some later point, all chemo is ineffective and it will stop. Nothing more will be done at that point.

As far as my life has been going lately, I have had alot of people over for dinner, BBQing on the patio, my son had his graduation party (highschool). I took him over to WSU for student orientation and he starts there as a freshman in mid August. Been slowly working on task around the home, but am very fatigued from treatment. That is the worst part of treatment-the fatigue. I still work 3 days on chemo week, and 5 days the next week. Work is great and I enjoy working hard at my job. We hoped to take a cruise to Alaska, but have not set it up... My daughter will start her Senior year in highschool this fall, and then also off to college. Son finished in the top 10 of his class, daughter is top 1 academic best in her high school, and has held that status since like 6th grade,... Proud papa. Mom is doing her best to care for me, bless her soul. I worry about her the most. Songs on the radio occasionally bring tears to all of our eyes.

It is pretty creepy planning your own funeral. Trying to get started on a powerpoint with audio. Song selection hurts. Pictures, everything... But i want things to go easy for her when i am gone.

Been out fishing three times in the last two months, nothing special, hitting the lakes for trout with my family. Knocked them dead on two trips, the last was too hot and only picked up panfish. Still good eats...probably better than the lowland lake trout we get... Planning a westport salmon charter for my office and family, would like to pack the boat. My brother who has not hunted in 25 years wants me to take him on our muley hunt with his 14yr old who just passed hunter safety. Been eating alot of stuff from my freezer lately and had the kids learn to cook it all up, clams, panfish, grouse, elk steak, elk heart...they are learning it all.

I am most interested in legacy. This is key to me. I want my kids to carry on our families hunting and fishing legacy. I want to make an difference for them.

Hopefully this winter I am still here and am able to hit St Helens for our annual back-country snowshoe camp, sleeping in tents on the snow. I hope my neuropathy in my feet and hands will let me do this.

Anyway guys, I am here and still strong, just tired. I appreciate all the posts and support. I feel the support from everyone, family, friends, work, church, and folks like you all. Thank you.

Hey Kevin, good to see your doing good, its not an easy fight and you supported my family when we were dealing with my nephews cancer so there is no way ill let you slide without offering a helping hand so like has been said if there is anything you need or want just say the word my friend !!

Something you can help me with though, i have a great problem and that is i have caught tons of spot shrimp this year and im in need of some great recipes and if there is a guy that knows is way around a kitchen its you or at least you always post up some really tasty sounding recipes !!!

Thanks Robo!

Steam boil those shrimp, get them out of the shell...

How about a Penne (noodle) Alfredo dish with the shrimp?

Get your penne noodles cooking, and pan sautee the shrimp with some minced onion, mushrooms, the shrimp, butter and some wine added near the end of cooking, also toss on some Old Bay seasoning....then add to your noodles and sauce at the very end. The saute should cook quick.

good luck!

Holy crap you guys and gals are amazing. Tears in my eyes for sure right now.

I have a bit of a hard time typing so will cut and paste what I posted for the moderators behind the scenes.

here it is;

Ok, so you are all in the know.

I think I last posted in August. Since then, I have continued to work at my office 8 days out of ten. I get CHEMO every other monday. I leave CHEMO with a pump attached to my access port in my chest. It pumps more *censored* into me every five minutes for 48 hours. I am able to work with the pump on, on tuesday. Wednesday I go in for pump removal, usually really tired this day. I work Thursday and Friday. The next week is my good week and can basically do as I please...a bit tired though.

CHEMO causes neuropathy. Basically it kills nerves in your extremities-feet and hands. Your skin darkens and things go numb, with major pins and needles in my feet. This was getting bad, so they modified my chemo (weakened it)....the plus is the neuropathy diminishes a bit, but the bad is that you are now not fighting the cancer as much.

Last Christmas (2014) they gave me a 50% chance of surviving one year, they gave me a 0% chance of being here in two years. Esophageal cancer is one of the worse to get, no cures. Advances in treatment (trial drugs) usually only extend life a month or two. Not worth driving to Seattle 8 times a month for only a two month benefit. Crap,  I swear, driving to Seattle one time shortens my life by a month or better.

Right now I do not feel like i am dying, but worry about how fast the cancer will come back. My last CT scan was pretty good, they could not see the cancer, but I have a CEA test done every other week and it is the indicator blood test for cancer. My CEA has skyrocketed in the last 3 months to above the point where I was originally diagnosed. This is tragic news and I suspect cancer is going to rage back soon.

Since November 2013 I have lost about 110 pounds. I had it to lose... They actually do not want me to lose weight because this indicates I am not eating enough. better to battle cancer with proper nutrition, rather than starving the body.

I fished this summer a  few times. I hunted grouse and mule deer at my favorite haunts, shot a ton of grouse, saw 8 bucks (7non-shooters, 1 shooter at 675 yards straight up shale, boulders and scattered pine trees. Yeah, I left that buck for next year. The good of the hunt was my brother who had not hunted for 30 years came and brought his 12yr old. Had a blast showing them the mule deer (dissapointment) ropes. :)  Really cool to pass on my heritage through my brother and son.

My son is now at WSU, in the marching band and went to the Sun (snow) bowl with the cougs. He is really a great young man. My daughter starts college this fall. She is a no BS 4.0 senior at her highschool and is competing with her best friend for valedictorian for her class. My daughter joined me on the muley hunt, we had a blast together. My son opted for studies as he bit off more than he could chew his first semester in college taking 6 classes, plus marching band duties. My kids are awesome. Could not be prouder.

My wife and I are enjoying time together. (Hope she doesn't read this) but she is a bit in denial. I can't blame her though. Imagine watching and knowing your loved one of 35 years is dying before you. Brutal.

The home life is good. Had a few Christmas parties, and a football playoff party that was pretty quiet for some reason.

I hope to chime in here more often. My time is probably better spent with my wife and daughter who is still at home finishing her senior HS year.

I will keep in touch and chat with you all. I really have enjoyed my time over the years getting to know you all. A blessing for sure.

Hey, maybe I will go open up my old Michelle Sucks post, and post up pictures of my rugs on the walls. Just for old times sakes..... :)

Talk with you all soon.

Forgot to add, since last January, I have had 3 kidney stones surgeries, had Sepsis, a blood infection after one of the surgeries and had a major DVT blood clot with hospitalization too. I keep asking my wife what did I do to piss off god. :dunno:

Scariest was actually the DVT. That can kill you quick. Well, sepsis too...

Kevin.

Ice that is so good to hear.  And your wife can be in denial sometimes that's the best coping mechanism for the situation.  My kiddo is like 18 months cancer free they took out his port a couple months ago.  He called to tell me he has scans on my birthday (this is where denial is handy) and his results on Thursday.

Keep on doing what you are doing, except working so much  :chuckle: although my guess is you would stress out if you had to stop working.  I am so glad you updated all of us I think of you often.

Ha, you guys. Not sure it is really being so tough dealing with it. You are sort of in a peculiar position where your options are limited. IE: What else am I going to do.... Anyhow, your comments make me feel pretty good. It makes me think of those out there that do not get support like I have. Really sad for those folks.

I posted something on Facebook a month ago about the "daze" i get in while driving. Thinking about the future, the past, and what the future will look like for my wife, kids and family. Probably a blessing to know that our (my) times are limited. Puts things into perspective. I have no excuse for not making sure my loved ones know how I care for and love them. It makes you a big softy. I used to have a bit more harsh attitude. Don't get me wrong, I can be a humongous pain in the ass if needed. The nice thing is that when I plan any event lately, everyone comes to it! :)

I will be out trying to blast some ducks this weekend before the closer. Next is probably some razor clams, then turkey. What else am I missing this time of year? I need to get out as much as I can while I can. Hey, come to think of it Cohoho owes me a trip! :) I canned up a bunch of his tuna for him....I need to give him a call.

Huntwa, you are all awesome, thanks for the support. Kevin.

It's good to see you back. I want you to know your post about the over the counter pain meds got me to the Dr. I have a neck injury from a car accident years ago and use to eat Advil by the handful. Looking into the side effects got me worried. I have been through this with a friend who had brain cancer and my grandfather. I know its hard to ask for help, but I'm fairly close. If you need any help, a ride to an appointment or anything, feel free to reach out and if I can help I would be happy to do so.

Update.

My recent CT scan indicated that my current chemo is not working as good anymore, cancer is becoming resistant. This was expected at some time....most cancer patients get 6 months out of the first chemo mix. I lasted 1 year. My doctor said I was atypical. My wife said she knew that 34 years ago when we first dated. :)

Cancer is now showing a bit in my Rt lung. This was there also 3 months ago. Growth is slow.

My doctor was amazed that after 1 year of chemo I am still strong and resilient. She has referred me to Seattle Cancer Care Alliance to see if I could join their current cancer drug study. The study is to instead place cancer patients onto a drug that causes the body to attack the cancer cells...not chemo. Since I am Ok, for now, i can see joining the study. It would require a trip to seattle every 3 weeks. This study med does not cure cancer but instead extends life and increases quality of life. Chemo sucks and I have been on it since January 2015.

So, I wait to visit with the cancer team late this month. In the meantime, no chemo....which sounds good for a change, but scary too-not fighting cancer with something for a while. In the mean time, I will continue work, do the honey list stuff and prep for turkey season.

Hi guys and gals, it has been too long since I logged in. Sorry for staying away, been out living life, working, spending time with my family.

Since here last, I went on a turkey trip with my son, brought him over from Pullman to soda springs and chased birds to no avail. Had great father son time.

My daughter just graduated second in her class (Tenino Highschool), got accepted into the honors college at good ol' Wazzu. Go Cougs! I will have both my kids at Pullman this fall, both in the marching band, could not be prouder.

Unbelievably my wife was also diagnosed with cancer, a small tumor on her right kidney. She had a partial nephrectomy (partial removal of her right kidney)April 4th at Swedish in Seattle. Chances are hers will not return as removal surgery at such an early stage (stage 1) has a great recovery rate.

I have continued on with chemo treatment, starting a dual medication therapy each week. Chemo each weeks sucks bad. But, I am able to work, and I am able to take chemo after working a half day at work. (God Bless the Washington State Patrol my employer)

I just put 1/3 of my lawn in, and have grass to mow. The other 2/3 is just dirt, waiting to be properly rolled and then seeded. Probably waited too long, oh well, been a bit tired lately so things go slowly.

I will be checking my old posts and reading a lot more new posts.

I do need a favor of some special person here. My dad booked one of those cool houseboats on Lake Roosevelt for 5 days in July. I will be asking for someone with knowledge of the lake to throw some tips my way as to what kind of fishing I can get on in July there. Stay tuned for that request. If this special person is you, please PM me!!! :)

Anyway, as usual, it will be nice to check back in with many of you and see what all you have been up to.

From Tenino, greetings! I will be spending a tiny bit of time re-visiting all of you.

Kevin.

So where are you boarding this houseboat?  2 rivers or in Kettle?

Awesome to hear from you and glad your wife's tumor is unlikely to return.  I have a good friend currently going through treatment.  He has colon cancer.  He's bummed because he put off his colonoscopy until he was 55.  Had he done it at 50 like recommended he would have just had to have the polyp removed.

Anyway, as usual, it will be nice to check back in with many of you and see what all you have been up to.

From Tenino, greetings! I will be spending a tiny bit of time re-visiting all of you.

Kevin.

I'm just having a merry ol time here Ice. I have THREE new compression fractures in my back now for a total of 5 compression fractures. I was wondering why my back was hurting more and the pain killers weren't working so well any more.

I just bought two bicycles for my granddaughters. One is 5 and the other is 2. But... you have to treat them equally and love them like they are both the most special person in the world. And that can have it's moments because of the sibling rivalries. Such is the life of a Grandpa eh?  :chuckle:

Well it was about 25 years ago that I had a friend take a vacation on Lk Roosevelt. It was some kind of house boat. It sounded very nice from what I remember. When they started to fish they brought in bucket loads of perch. Over all it was the quality time every body had with each other.

Well like I said that was about 25 years ago. I do remember the excitement in my friends voices. And the body language as they described the fish they hauled in. I do know the fish were not trout or salmon. It really seems like they hauled in perch.

I have forgotten about that. Once upon a time I thought that would be a wonderful vacation to take the family too. Have a wonderful time. And you don't have to scale the perch yourself. I think there is a bait boy on board. I hate it when those spines impale my fingers. It never fails. My fingers are harpooned like Moby Dick when I'm done.  :chuckle:

Kevin,

I've always enjoyed your posts and family priority, hard to believe your little kids are in college (mine is too).  Glad also that the WSP is treating you well.

I don't have any secrets to share about Roosevelt.  I do have a friend who fishes the lower reservoir in July with his son, casting to shore with curlytail jigs and catching smallmouth until they are sick of it (100-150 fish days he claims, but you know fishermen...).  Black and brown are the go-to colors he says.

Wishing good outcomes for both you and your wife.

Checking in again. Many months have passed. All sorts of crap to fight.

I exhausted all regular cancer chemotherapy for this cancer.

I was referred for consideration into another cancer trial drug study. I made it into this drug study with an exact genomic (spelling?) match. This study is being administered by MD Anderson cancer study Houston Texas. This is the good news.

The bad news is the cancer continued to spread in the mean time into my spine. I am receiving radiation at this time for this one with extreme pain at the spine and back. Taking the trial drug from Texas to attack the original cancer.  So much fun.

I am a shadow of the man I used to be. Have lost around 155lbs to date.

I am usually totally exhausted .

More tomorrow. Need to sleep. Kevin.

It is with great sorrow and very heavy hearts that our family announce that Kevin Wolf, aka Iceman, passed away on Saturday, March 4, 2017 after a 4 year battle with cancer.   A Celebration of Life is scheduled for this Saturday, March 25th at 11 am at Capital Christian Center, 4431 Martin Way East, Lacey WA.

Iceman enjoyed this site very much as well as meeting up with several of the members.  Our son, Reece has expressed an interest in joining the site in near future.

Sincerely,
Kathi Wolf (Mrs. Iceman), Reece and Allison

Mrs. Wolf - I don't know how much time you will have to check out threads on here but if you do read this, please pass this on to your kids.

My name is Travis Bradford.  I live in Spokane, graduated from WSU a long time ago, and got to see what type of husband and father Kevin was, as much as one can through online forums.  Back when this was a small group of folks it seemed like everyone knew most everything about all the members.  As it grew and life got busy, I haven't been on very much, so I missed a lot of news.  I see that both of your kids are now attending WSU, and you must be extremely proud.  I just wanted to offer up my time, money, or whatever they need, if needed.  I have 3 kids of my own.  I lost my father to cancer just after I graduated high school.  We lived on the west side and I left for WSU.  It was a confusing and lonely time.  If they need some time in the woods turkey hunting, deer hunting, fishing, etc. I would be more than happy to take them.  Maybe having similar stories would help the healing process, or just being in the woods would help them by remembering those times with their dad.  If you want to pass along my email address and this offer, it is tlbradford14@gmail.com.

My prayers are with you and your family as you celebrate a life well lived.
