Got my spring bear in the freezer and looking at doing something different with it as I have 2 bear rugs with similar color already? Anyone know what it costs to have it just tanned?
Its a beautiful colar and I hate to just throw it away!
thanks,
Wazzu

Anywhere for $110 to $150 a foot to have a rug done so I would think it would be a lot less then that
-
$110 - $150 is really cheap for a bear rug.
Some taxis charge by the foot and some have a flate rate when charging to tan a bear hide. I charge $55 per foot to tan a bear hide.

$55 a foot for a soft tan?

Yes

Wow.
I will have to think twice about packing hides out anymore. Getting too damn expensive.
-
There is a lot more involved in tanning a bear skin versus a deer hide.
-
55 sounds about right just had about 5 footer tanned 300. it is expensive but I have done quite a few and hang them on log coat racks I think it looks great my wife hates them

wow...I guess Iam lucky..knowing someone with a account at commercial tannery..I paid $80 :chuckle:
-
Now I feel stupid had same taxi tan 7 over the years, plus a rug and 3/4 bear mount I need better negotiating skills or maybe better friend with accounts at the tannery!

Here is one possibility, would have to probably do all the prep, fleshing, paws & ears if keeping them on, etc., but looks like a decent price:

That is there price just to tan the hide.
You still have to pull the skull. Split, turn, and salt the lips, ears, eyes, and nose. Plus pull the feet and toes down to each claw. Then flesh the body and salt 2 times. Then dry it hard.

Thanks Michelle. Still trying to figure out what to do with this skin. May be in contact with you.

Don't forget the shipping both ways also! :)

I remember being quoted about $12 a sq ft for a deer hide a few years ago. Deer are much easier than a bear though, since you usually don't have the face to deal with on a deer or the feet. I've seen my buddy flesh out a deer hide and they could do it QUICK but the ears, lips, eyes, and all the stuff to do in each paw on a bear is much more work than just a flat deer hide. $55 per foot does not seem out of line at all, although I was hoping my soft tan on my spring bear would bear fairly cheap...
