Title: Kokanee thread
Post by: Alchase on June 14, 2013, 04:09:08 PM
Ok, I figure we have salmon, stealhead, bottomfish, we needed a Kokanee thread  :hello:
I know Kokanee are landlocked Sockey salmon, but fishing for Kokanee is kind of unique,  and almost trout like, so here goes.
I have read many articles, blogs, forums about fishing for Kokanee and I was curious what rigs and techniques you guys have the most luck with.
Some say use a dropper weight then a dodger followed by with a 2' to 3' leader. Others say a 8" to 10" leader only, so the wobble of the dodger gives the lure or bait more side to side action.
They all seem to agree, shoe peg white corn is the bomb, lol. But one old timer who introduced my to Kokanee fishing swore by leaded line, 1 oz banana weight, flasher, followed by wedding ring with Not shoe peg corn  :yike: but maggots! I have to admit we caught our 26 fish each limit at dorshack Dam Idaho in just a couple hours. This was in 1990, LOL

So what setup do you guys use for Kokes?

i fish a dodger with about 2ft leader to a wedding ring with the stinger hook and I use the berkley maggots and fire corn. run a stiffer leader for more action off the dodger much like sockeye fishing. troll slow bout .5 to 1 mph.

Cohoho, not a problem at all,
I have also caught the silver bug from Riffe Lake along with kokanee.
Silvers 18-20" long sure taste amazing.

The keys are depth and going slow.  A lot of the time you will find them 30, 45, or more feet down, especially as it gets later in the summer.  That can be tough to get to without the proper gear.

In general, dodgers, pop gear, etc. will work.  Wedding rings and corn seem to be the tried and true.  Other scents are worth trying, and there are now a few on the market that are geared directly at kokanee.  But, in general, the toughest part is being in the fish and making sure you are going slow.

Here's a few from Riffe lake from a few years back, we were fishing from the fishing bridge using salad shrimp. It took less than an hour to get these ones.

I saw that page yesterday while googling around all kokanee sights. Had no clue she was in my backyard, LOL

Have you have any luck with any of her lures?

Her "Pretty in Pink Kokanee" and "Squiddly Thang Pink" look exactly like what I am looking for.

They use slip bobber with nightcrawlers, with the stop about 10 -15 ft up the line.
Also rooster tails with a corn or maggot teaser, though most come from the bobber set up. They do not get allot of fish, usually enough for a meal.

I know Clear Lake also has allot of kokanee, I do not know if there is a shore access fishing area though.

Ive been hammering them at  loon lake on the eastside of the state at nite.  A red bluefox spinner with the treble removed, followed by a 18'' lead and red glow hook, and pink maggots.  Fishing 30' of water at the bottom and we cant keep the line in the water!!!   Ive never had much luck with them, but night time is the right time.  My lovely wife  :drool:and  two floaty lites made for one of the best fishing outings ive ever had.  Some of them went 17'' which was just almost entirely too much fun.  When hooked they rocket off the bottom and crash headlong into the bottom of the boat, and it doesnt even daze them.  They are quite amazing fish   We caught almost 100 fish in 5 hours of fishing, over three nights and hooked and lost many more.   Kick on the lights and they come in herds,  you can watch them swimming below chowing on all the tiny critters attracted to the lights.

Alder or Rife trolling 1/2 yd gear, 3' line then orange or green wedding ring, but the kokanee killer works best. If still fishing off the bottom worm, micro wave shrimp or green power bait with the gold flake in it, must be Berkleys. The fish are bait snobs. Been fishing both for 30 years. The fish smoke up real good.

I was fishing lake Stevens pretty regular for them, had another thread going. Been meaning to order a bunch of stuff from Toni to try. I really like red, orange and green wedding ring with double pink gamakatsu number 4 hooks, 20# leader 6-10" long fishing on the DR. I've had the most success with corn soaked in tuna oil and dicks DNA scent overnight, or anise and tuna. I know mallard79 uses herring and garlic scents with good success too. I haven't fished but once since our baby was born but hope to get out some more. Still have steelhead, sockeye, and humpies to chase too though.

We went night fishing and the best thing that worked for us was a cherry bomber with a foot leader(glow hook) and maggots on the glow hook. Corn worked for a bit but i think it backs em up pretty bad. but we were fishing about five feet off the bottom slow jigging. they bite light tho so you really have to be paying attention  ;)

My son and I went back to Riffe again on Saturday morning. Wind made it a little interesting trolling, and did not see allot of action between 8:00 and 10:00 near the dam. So we pulled up and ran down to just east of were swifford pond comes in. Worked the rock line and started to hook up. Picked up one at 22" three more in 12" - 16" range all silvers. The 22 incher made 3 great jumps like a respectable silver should. We had to be off the water by 1:00, and bite seemed to be just strating up.  I really hate leaving the water when the bite is on, LOL.
Got a little sun burned, and some great looking fish on the first day of summer.

Fished Yale Res. today with the wife.
We boated 14, lost 3 times as many.
Gonna tie up double hooks and try that.

How much leader do you run for a wedding ring, off of a lake troll or cow bells?

Depends on what my lure is.
If running a wedding ring or other lure that has its own blade or action, I use the the standard length that comes with them or 24" to 36".

If I am running teaser or hoochie I run them 12" 18" behind the dodger do the dodger's side to side motion moves the hoochie back and forth real well.

I troll as slow as possible, my 15 hp 4 stroke yamaha will idle down to about 0.5 mph.

There are a few Kokanee blogs that recommend a little different then what I do.

For lures without action or spinner the leader should be 2 1/2 times the length of the dodger.
For lures that have there own action, the leader should be 4 times the length of the dodger.

Thanx.
I use my electric motor. Had it on slowest speed all day. Shut it off when the wind picked up. Worked well.

Funny addition--   When GI Joes went down, I picked up some ambassador knockoffs - cheap. I went to Fishermans and picked up 2, 7ft rods- cheap.
When the boat broke I quit boat fishing and haven't been able to find those rods. :'(
I broke a rod sunday and started looking through my collection for a replacement, and found the missing rods :IBCOOL:
My wife said -- get this" maybe you have too many rods" :yike:

The wife and I hit Alder on the 4th. We got on the water around noon, motored over to the dam.
Using 1 oz weight followed by a UV flasher with snubber, then wedding ring. I baited up my wife's top hook with three pink power bait maggots and the trailer hook with shoo-peg corn soaked in scent. Told her to go out 50 pulls.
I started baiting my rig, when she gets hit on pull 29, LOL.
One hit one fish in the boat, total wet time less then 3 minutes. Starting out nicely  :chuckle:

After an hour and a half, she has three on the stringer, I have one.  :o
We have missed twice that many and were are using gamakatsu reds  :dunno:

I had one huge Koke on, got it all the way to the boat and he throws the hook about 4 ft from me, then just sits there taunting me. I try and scoop him up with the net and almost got him, but that wakes him up and he takes off with a splash.
As I am bringing my rig over to re-bait, the swivel attached to the weight and every thing else, decides to let everything go to the bottom.  :bash:

I re-rig using a pink hoochie and I am back to catching fish.
We pickup and run over to the "No Wake Zone" behind the logs to get away from the idiots inner tubing.

I guess idiots can't read, half of the boats coming in the no wake zone were doing 20 + MPH. Where are the water cops when you need then.

We fished until we limited, then headed home.

Oh ya, I did a little experimenting with various lengths of leader and with or without scent (shoe-peg soaked in scent).
We had probably twice the amount of bites when our leaders were shortened to the 12" to 18" length behind the flasher then with the standard (out of the package length) and no twisted tangles.
We also had noticeably more hits using the shoe-peg with scent. It only takes one or two kernels on the trailer to make a difference.

I also learned a good lesson the hard way.
Do not put the scent on you shoe-peg corn until the day you need it. I put the scent on last weekend, for the trip to Riffe. By yesterday most of the corn was mush and would not stay on the hook.

A great day of fishing, even if we lost twice as many as we caught, but that is Kokanee fishing.  :chuckle:

Well hit loon last nite. It was the proverbial fishing for "Ghost's". Fished from about 8:30 till 2. We picked up 20 but most of the boats around seemed to draw a blank. Had several folks move closer to perhaps catch them.

When using corn...we use it a max of 3 days after we open the can whether it gets soaked in scent or not......just like anything else it goes bad....and lets be honest...it's not that expensive as long as you buy it from the grocery store instead of the tackle shops.....

I smoked up a batch of kokanee and silvers Saturday, they turned out great.
We went back to Alder yesterday and caught 9 more kokanee. Had one on that was pulling line like crazy but lost it. I caught a 6 incher that was barely hooked, so I returned him to the water. It was about 5 feet from the boat when an Eagle dove in with a splash and snagged the fish! That was awesome!

I have to rant though, So many boaters on Alder lake are totally inconsiderate to those around them.

Lake Stevens is still producing.... took a buddy from work today who has only fished Lake Keechelus for them. He was shocked to see the size of the fish we were getting (the fish in Keechelus are over populated and stunted....an 8"er is a good fish up there) we ended up with a dozen keepers in the 12 to 14" range and a big one at just over 3lbs! Lost and missed quite a few and released a handfull of dinks. Saw a decent number of boats but wasn't seeing too many nets coming out. Seemed like most were trolling too fast.

We hit up Riffe for Silvers on Saturday. I was putting them in a bucket by my motor, had a nice 22 incher jump out of the bucket! Luckily he landed back in the boat. We were keeping a close count on how many fish we had so we would head home with our limits. I counted ten fish (My son and I) so we stowed our gear and headed to the dock. My son takes the fish to the cleaning station while I store our gear and tie down the boat. I head to the cleaning station and look at the fish, there are only 8 fish? I ask what happened to the other two, he says there were only eight in the bucket. Since were both checked the bucket had ten fish, the only possible outcome was they jumped out like the other fish, but they made it over the side of the boat, LOL

Silvers acting like the flying carp in the Mississippi, who would of thought

We also went to Alder Lake on Sunday for Kokanee.
Finally got my new Garmin echo 200 up and running! Nice to have a functional fish finder again. We had a slow day, lots of hits, only 13 boated. One over 20 inches, and my son had one on that was huge but it through the hook at the boat.
My wife forgot to set the free spool lever on the real she was using. I was re-rigging my line and I happen to look up in time to see the tail end of her line go flying off her real  :yike:
I through it in reverse and was able to grab the line before it disappeared. I reattached the line and handed it back to her to real in. She had a fish on that had helped pull the line off the real. LOL

We watched the Osprey dive in for a fish, then an eagle come down and took the fish away! That was like watching a dragster chasing a miata. The eagle was incredibly fast, but the osprey could corner like crazy.

What a beautiful day to be on the water!
