Title: The Battle at Picacho Pass...
Post by: Bean Counter on June 17, 2013, 09:27:10 PM
Alright, history buffs--sound off: The western most battle of the Civil War was fought in:

A. Galveston, Texas
B. Albuquerque, New Mexico
C. Phoenix, Arizona.

Answer:

Well if you answered c, you are correct!  :yike: The civil war made its way to Arizona. It was a small skirmish--just two squad size elements that served as a scouting and outpost assignments. They were probably bored as all get out and happened to stumble upon each other and decided to do some of that whole 'war' thing. In the foray there were a few casualties, and the union troops withdrew, marking this a small yet futile victory for the Confederate forces.

Every year hundreds of reenactors and thousands of visitors descend upon this remote mountain pass to commemorate the battle. In fact, so many actors show up for the show that there are more people reenacting the battle than actually fought in it in the first place! Enjoy the show..

Didn't know about a battle in Arizona.  We visited the site of the battle in Albuquerque last April though.  I was there with the JROTC rifle team that I coach for the Western Regional Championship and we did a little sight seeing between matches.  I took a pic of the team by the cannons.
