Title: Anybody flown a medium sized dog before?
Post by: amosmoses on June 18, 2013, 12:20:59 PM
Has anybody on here flown with there dog? Gonna be moving half way across the country and it looks like flying will save me some money but flying a dog seems more complicated than I thought.

find direct flight, put in kennel big enough for dog to stand up and turn around, tape on a zip lock of food and a waterbottle and drop them off.

Don't forget to have the vet health certificate with you.

I sent two pups over the road with a dog transport service run by a guy I know. It was $900 to ship pup to Alabama, $750 to MN.

Weather may definitely be an issue. Was looking at American airlines and they state no dogs over 100 lbs. But with there max kennel size that dog could never stand up normally. I have s 45 lb gsp and think even she would have trouble standing up

Happy That seems like like a lot. Do they have special accommodations our something. And  thanks for the info

Alaska airlines is $100 one way. United is around $150. Delta is about the same. Forget the water bottle and contact the airlines before you send it, TSA and their tempormental nazis control what goes with the dog.

If you are traveling with the dog, its not that difficult but you do want to make sure the kennel is big enough.

If you are shipping the dog by itself, its a bit more expensive but they travel essentially the same way.

Where are you traveling from and to?

$100? If you are flying with the dog to AK as additional baggage that is a possible rate. Definitely not $100. I think last pup was $300.

You have to have a food and water dish in the kennel and you fill out instructions on when/what to feed and water if there is a delay. Weather temps can restrict flying of animals. If the location has a expected temp of over 85 or something like that- no go.

100lb limit isn't completely enforced. If they did, no show labs would make it to Eukanuba or any of the other fancy-pants dog shows! lol

Have you looked up Gundog Express? If not, it might be worth talking to them.

Motel 6 allows dogs, usually for free if you're going to be driving part of your move at all.

$100 on AA if YOU are flying with the dog. In the cabin, dog must fit UNDER the seat.  There are no weather restrictions in AK right now although, I think you said you're flying a pup to the East Coast. You sure Alaska Air has non-stop flights to your destination?

Happy it's john with Muddy little female gsp. Met you last summer at the akc test. She's small but  definitely won't fit under the seat. Sucks she would gladly ride on my lap.

When I fly, I prefer to fly large dogs.  More leg room.

A vetrinarians statement of climate acclimation or something like that can override the set temperature restrictions,I know I've done it with the dog I shipped to kansas city.

Continental has no heat restrictions. Delta has certain cities where they are running flights that have no heat restrictions.
