My 13 year old son drew a Toledo cow tag for August 1-7. We've hunted in the unit before just not on that end of it and never in August. Just looking for some helpful advice. Gonna need a lot of ice I'm guessing
-
be selective lots of hoofrot
-
August? Weird. I wouldn't worry about the hoof rot as much as the heat. Plan ahead for sure.
-
Ill be in there to chasing them around with my bow! :IBCOOL:

Lots of private property and the elk seem to know where the property lines are. You should get into them though on the Weyco land if you burn some boot leather. Best of luck to your son!

Thanks! I'll be sure to keep you all posted on how he does. It'll be his first elk if he gets one so he's pretty excited. we better get to work though, it's coming up fast.

I could kill an elk with a piece of bread and a baseball bat in august shouldnt have an issue getting him a cow
-
Yeah you should not have any problem of pulling a cow out at all.

Thanks everyone! He still can't stop talking about it. We weren't able to make it up for the opening day so that was or first day in there. We hunted all day saw a ton of deer but no elk until 6pm. We only saw this 1 cow at about 180 yards in the Clearcut and when he was trying to ease up to a stump to rest on he got busted by another cow with 2 calves. The other cow ran down into a draw where we couldn't see her as the other 3 stood there waiting. We had discussed earlier in the day that if we saw a cow with calves we would let them walk. So I watched my son patiently wait for the other cow to come out of the draw. at the point that she did finally come out of the draw she was 200 yards away. She stopped broadside for 2 seconds and my boy drilled her. She took 5 steps and stopped so I told him to hit her again! He pulled the trigger and she dropped. 2 shots 2 inches apart and right behind the front shoulder. He even packed out half of his own elk. This was a day that him and I will never forget!!
