Title: Selkirk A any moose what are your thought?
Post by: Elkbow33 on June 19, 2013, 04:55:28 PM: I drew Selkirk A any moose tag and would appreciate any help I could get on areas and what type of bull to go for. I also drew entiat archery deer. Since I have taken many good bucks I am going to concentrate on the moose but hopefully can get it done before the deer hunt! :yike:

Post by: bearpaw on June 19, 2013, 05:05:27 PM: Lots of moose and moose throughout the unit, I would shoot for 40 inches or more with at least 8 points per side and double eye guards. When I hunt that area I usually see 5 to 10 bulls per day which means a guy can be pretty selective. I have seen a lot of quality bulls in this unit, great hunt. :tup:

Post by: huntnnw on June 19, 2013, 06:50:15 PM: South end of the unit holds the most moose... Take the fS road just before bead lake.. It heads east towards ID.. It will get u up above the lake on top and there is some big clear cuts up there. I ve watched many big bulls up there.

I had that same tag 3 years ago. I learned a lot and have many things I could pass on, the most of all is patience. I got worried on day 5 of the season after not seeing more than 2 very small bulls in the first 5 days. Had 4 family and friends with me, all calling in different areas as they looked for bear and nothing. I was in an area that everyone said had good moose, even had photos of a 48"ish 12x13. Season opener was unseasonably hot, 85-90 at 6-7000' and they were not responsive to the calling. Evening of Day 5 a cold front came in, killed a 38" bull in a thick fog on day 6 and over the next few hours as we carved him up, we had multiple bulls grunting around us in the timber. I am thrilled to have filled my OIL tag with a pretty little bull but from what I have seen in this forum, I most likely would have had many other opportunites as I had almost three more weeks of vacation I could have used in November. I have not had a chance to hunt bulls in washington, but the few times I have gone up to BC and hunted them the weather had everything to do with the rut. If it was hot weather we saw nothing, as soon as we had a freeze it was moose on! I will be on the hunt with my grandfather this year as he too drew the Selkirk A tag. Im hoping the weather is going to be right for the opener as it would be nice to get it done earlier in the season. Good luck on your hunt and good job on drawing a very difficult tag.

Not sure there would be a bad month to hunt moose. :chuckle: huntnnw gave you some very good advise there. The first week of November would be my choice......take an elk while your up there.

You mean Mill Creek? :dunno: I live up here there is no Miles creek. Yup Mill creek holds some awesome moose. Also check out north and south baldy and up the east branch of LeClerc rd all the way to the top holds good moose. I would spend much time north of Bunchgrass Meadows off of the middle branch of CecLerc creek not nearly as many moose. Also great hunting above bead lake. It has been a while since I have hunted it... BUT you hit the spots that the State Biologist told me to go and find them. You might also want to bring your mountain bike as that is a good quick way to get behind the lock gates.

I spent lots of time scouting the area, like most every weekend throughout the summer. Listen to the advice you got here, and don't bother calling the biologist, the spots he will give you are the same three spots he gives everyone else who calls him. My biggest piece of advise would be to be patient, don't let the tag burn a hole in your pocket and have fun. Be aware there are more grizzlies in the area than the F&G either admits or knows about. Nothing to be scared of, but be aware of it. Good luck and come back here and tell us all your story after your done.

No need to scout for deer if you already know the area. The deer will be moving in there with some weather. Good luck on both hunts. Looking forward to stories and pictures.

Above Bead Lake all the way to the Idaho border, above Marshall Lake, LeClerc Ck area all hold huge moose and they're easier to find that bucks! There are also a lot of moose around Yokum Lake though I'm unsure how much of that land is huntable. Heading further north, Sullivan Lake area also holds some great moose, as well as a good population of Grizzly. Another option would be to head into Idaho, camp on the north end of Priest Lake, ID. Hwy 57 turns into a dirt road (USFS road 302) about 6 miles north of Nordman, ID and then goes back into Washington shortly after that. Once in Washington there's some really large moose in that area, especially around "Hughes Meadows." Don't let F&G fool you into believing there aren't many Grizzly or that there aren't any on the south end...there are! I'd also suggest having a cougar tag in your pocket too. They're in there as well.

They also put way more than they should have, into a very small territory. That's why they've been moving south. I grew up 7 miles outside of Newport. The year I graduated high school, 1987, we had a couple of grizzlies in our pasture...lol. There's been several sighted around the Deer Park area as well, for the past several years.

The Nordman road winds in and out of Idaho and believe me there are griz in there, ive seen them many times! I've also seen huge bulls in there and a few sporatic Elk in those areas.

One to small and one needed a couple more steps. Seeing quite a few and hearing a few, but ya just a warm up for the moose hunt!!! Can't wait!

This is the first time in 8 yrs I'm not in the elk woods with my bow. Miss it more than I thought I would.
