Just going to look in from the edge.

Nope
-
Have fin throwing rocks and hearing 2 boinces
-
Be ready to catch him when he looks off the edge - he might faint and roll 2 the bottom of Mill creek
-
I have a buddy who also drew that tag. He has never seen the "shed" and I think he's gonna poop himself when he does. :chuckle:
-
Yep, sometimes the poop runs right down the legs of the FNG's :chuckle:
-
I have yet to draw the tag, but been in a couple times with friends that have. Can't wait until I draw, don't have to try too hard to get away from people. Call me crazy but I love that country.
-
I hope everyone who puts in for the shed will actually hunt it. I think a lot of people put in for it don't know what they got themselves into. I have seen a couple "hunters", while I was scouting, they looked into the hole and asked "This is the watershed?". Then they turned around left........
Let us know what they think of it! :chuckle:

Yep... too many people put in and have no idea what they're asking for... it's a shame to take a tag from someone that would use it!

You'll get away from 3/4 of the people. But not all of them.
-
I was shocked last year- there were people everywhere in there! Some pretty tough dudes hunting the bottom all got nice bulls... but they earned them! I have helped 3 guys in the shed and last year was the first time I have seen so much pressure deep in the unit.
-
This guy is in damn good a shape but it still will be the hardest hunt of his life. I have two other friends thay hunted it last year and the advice they told me to give was to shoot a bull no later than the third day. He said because all the pressure last year that by the third day most the elk had been pushed out. So Brett you better talk him in to not waiting to long.

ya no last day kills there.

Does anyone have any pics of a Watershed bull dead or alive??

That's good advice, though I don't think the elk leave the unit, they just quit wandering across open hillsides! There are some thickets in there that hide them pretty well. We passed on elk last year and ended up eating the tag. Feet problems will ruin the hunt... MAKE SURE YOU TRAIN FOR SERIOUS SIDE HILLING!!!!!!

Same thing I saw in there last year.

Not true.

I love that pic. I hope to have a pic just like that this year.

.
:yeah: The watershed is such a huge area majority of the elk never leave it. The only time they even leave is late winter when bulls are shedding out. They rarely leave

Stew pidasso shot a nice bull in that unit a few years ago. Maybe he will post a pic.

Hard to pass on that bull.

That was just advise from another guy. They may just be where you cant access them without horse or really sore feet.
-
Most of this hunt success is based on your mental fortitude.
Horses only help so much. You cant get them down the ridges in there for the most part.

Mill Cr from Table Rock LO. It's all downhill from here...

How many guys can you bring in with you on that hunt? Is it something like one guy can hunt along with you and 3 can help you pack out? I may have to head over with my buddy to help him with this mess he got himself into. I say mess because he has about 80lbs to lose if he even wants to think about not dying of a heart attack in that hole! Heck somehow I'm almost talking myself into this just because of the challenge. I love the Blues!

until it's time to come out! :yike: :chuckle:
You guys have fun in there! :chuckle:

:yeah: :hello:
-
If you come down to scout the area from the edges stop by Table Rock LO and say hello. I'll be on the lookout starting July 1. The bulls start bugling toward the end of August, and there are some monsters in there. I met several tag "winners" last summer who visited the lookout while scouting the watershed and several had a "what have I got myself into" attitude. Years ago the watershed was patrolled by rangers on horseback so there are old access trails that might still be OK for a good horse or mule; check the old USGS topo maps to find the old trails. Unfortunately, you can't get into the watershed before the season to check out the access. Good luck!

Hey everybody I am new to the site. I am the Buddy Roperfive88 is referring to. I will take all the help I can get from anybody who has been in. I have no plans of getting greedy but am definitely going to put the leg work in. October can't get here soon enough.
-
Glad you joined the site daddyelk! Welcome! Let us all know how your hunt goes? :hello: Great tag for sure. PM me and I'll let you know what I know about the unit.

Here's a shed Bull

I love that bull. Nice work

Here is a link to my pictures and write up. It was easier to post the link since I am on my phone.

As far as rhe trails that the rangers used to use I was told that they aren't completely overgrown but it is still difficult.
-
Went and looked in the shed today. Saw a couple bears and that was it.
-
Did you notice that for the first time there are 5 deer permits for the Watershed?
They will be in there stirring things up. They will be in there the first week of October.

This is the 3rd year and they have killed one deer out of ten tags the first 2years

:yeah:
-
I presume the impact was minimal. All permits were filled. What percent of the hunters had guides?
My hunting buddy shot a nice bull there several years ago. He said he saw some hunters utilizing guides.

Only the last few years you have been able to take anyone in with you and im not sure but i don't think your can use a guide on federal controlled lands. Anyome know the correct amwser to that?
Only 20 of 45 filled elk tags last year.
Here is the harvest report http://wdfw.wa.gov/hunting/harvest/2012/reports/elk_sp_gmu_all.php (http://wdfw.wa.gov/hunting/harvest/2012/reports/elk_sp_gmu_all.php)

I was looking at the land ownership. Some of 157 is on private land, some on state land and some on city land.
Just wondering if anyone hunts those fringe areas. Can you use an atv on city land?
-
elk don't like the sound of ATVs..
-
elk don't like the sound of ATVs..
Even if you tune the exhaust to sound like a herd of cow elk?
-
I don't think there is any where to drive an atv in the shed. My feet had a hard enough time.
-
Id love to have this tag. That country is what pre season conditioning is all about.
-
There's no place that you can use a atv in the shed. One thing about it, it would be hard to write you a ticket since you tires wouldn't touch the ground until you hit mill creek...
-
I was talking about the private land within the shed.
-
I was talking about the private land within the shed.
There is some private land within the watershed boundary. I believe that any ATV inside the boundary, even if private land, is prohibited. Although it doesn't really matter; an ATV will do you no good in unit 157.
Lots of ATV activity on the private land fringes outside of the shed, especially on the west side. But most of that is by the landowners. Very very very extremely hard to even get shed access on foot across those private lands any more. Too many land abuses.
Also, be forewarned that even if you get on the intake trail from the west side, you likely will end up on private property even though you never left the trail; and theoretically could be prosecuted for trespassing if you have not secured permission to use the intake trail that crosses through the private property. Do your homework, make some calls, and you should be fine.
