I was given a mossberg 500 20 ga shotgun. It has the original 26" barrel with the Accu-choke. Do i have to purchase a different barrel for slugs or can I just remove the choke and shoot slugs from the same barrel?

You can shoot rifled slugs with your smooth barrel, but not the sabot slugs (well you can, but it would be like shooting a 1700's smoothbore musket). Just put in you Imp or modified tube. You may also be able to get a rifled choke tube to shoot the sabot style slugs. If you want it to be a really good slug gun, buy their rifled barrel with the cantilevered scope mount. We have popped a few island deer with my wife's. I'd rather shoot a 20 ga slug than a 12 any day.

Make sure to have at least your IC choke in. I've heard (haven't tried it myself) that shooting without a choke in will destroy the choke threads.

How far will a slug accurately shoot?

In my 26" barrel Mdl 500C with the IMP CYL choke installed; I can hit a gallon milk jug @ 100yds from the bench w/BrennekeŽ Slugs.

It depends on your set up. (smooth bore or rifled barrel and sabots or slugs) I have a 12ga Mossberg 500 with a scoped cantilever barrel shooting 3" groups at 100 yds with Hornady 300gr SST slugs with ease.
I also recommend an improved choke tube if your shooting smooth bore to protect the chokes threads.

100 yards is pretty good for a slug. seen some nice bucks in a shotgun/archery only area.
