Chased this guy around in my backyard this morning. Not the best light to film him, lots of shadows and oftley morning like, but I had fun playing with Aperatures and ISOs. Someday I'll figure out what all those do. :)

Just before he flew...unfortunately I was on manual focus and couldn't track him in flight...like I said...more practice.

P-h-e-a-s-a-n-t.............. :hunter:............I am resigning from the halls of the employed Friday, pheasant..... :mgun2:
-
Thats awesome Sisu. I know how you love your bird hunting.
-
bone, those are some really cool pictures.. What kind of lens do you use? How close can you get to the pheasants without alerting them?

I was shooting my new Canon 400mm 2.8, which is sort of like carrying around the H telescope. I am just getting used to it. Lots of learning to do. I am trying to get used to it before I have a 190 muley standing in front of me this fall. Thank You. I was probably about 30 yards I guess from this guy. Kind of hard to shoot on the flat as it has almost too much. I have to be far ebough away its almost hard to get him full frame. I think only one of these are cropped, all the rest are full frame. Not everyone puts on full camo to walk into their backyard and garden. LOL i spotted him while drinking coffee and looking out my window. So thats exactly waht I did. he obviosuly had me in his sites. I followed him around and he hunkered a couple times and I would just wait him out. I hope to see him around again. He is definately an OLD bird.

GREAT PICS, I think I just found my new desktop, I am taking my kids pheasant hunting next friday, all of us can't wait!
-
Very well done! Thanks for sharing. :)

Looks like the settings were reasonable. I always tell myself...I bought a f2.8 lens for a reason, I'm going to shoot at it. 90% of the time I shoot at max aperture. I see you shot some at ISO 400 which is great as the quality is near identical to ISO 100. These are the types of shots where you try and isolate the bird from the background so the f2.8 you used most of the time works the best. Great shots.
You got that thing on a monopod right? You are a tougher man than me if you are handholding it longer periods...
-
I do have it on a monopod, and I need to invest in a better one. I seemed to have lost my good one so I ran and got a cheapy. Though they look the same theres a big difference. I tried lots of different stuff, mostly at F2.8. I messed with the ISO clear down to where the pics were almost dark when they turned out. I was trying to make the backdrop a little more blurry so that the bird snapped out, or depth of field. I was trying to figure out the best combination to do that. I am still having some focusing issues, but learning. Most were manual with the busy background. It was fun and he was being pretty reasonable. I think he figured I couldn't see him.
