Title: Fixed 4x scope for .338 Win Mag
Post by: crazysccrmd on June 22, 2013, 06:21:34 AM
I need to scope my new M77RS and want to do it with a fixed 4x scope. I have heard/read a lot of good things about the new production Weaver Classic K4 4x38 scopes. The price is great ($140) but how much .338 recoil can it handle? There doesn't seem to be a lot of quality options on the market in fixed 4 power. Others I found are the Leupold FX-II 4x33 ($300), Valdada IOR 4x32 ($360), and a steel/gloss version of the Weaver that would match the rifle perfectly, but costs $220 for the same optics.

I've found fixed power scopes to be much tougher than variables. I don't think that the Weaver will have any trouble holding up to the 338.

That Weaver is supposed to be a lot of scope for the money. The only issue might be eye relief. How does the eye relief compare to the Leupold?

For the price you could always try it out, and if you don't like it, stick it on a 22, or sell it, and then get the Leupold. I know you wouldn't be disappointed with the Leupold.

How about a used Leupold M8-4x? Older, but respected. If there were to be an issue it's covered by Leupold's warranty.

Leupold all the way ! no reason not to shoot a 3x9 or 4x12 though , they will hold up fine on your .338 and are nice on the bench while sighting in .

I find that I never use the higher power settings on the one variable that I have. I like the simplicity, reliability and lighter weight that most fixed power scopes offer. Four times magnification is more than enough for engaging a target at reasonable hunting ranges. I can make easy 600m hits on man size targets with an ACOG on my M4 and that's farther than I plan on shooting at game with any rifles I currently own.

I've had a few of these and they were all great. Plus they're usually in the $150-200 range when you can find them. The last one I had sat on a 458 Win Mag and held up great.

Putting an ACOG on an AR15 with a M4 profile barrel is like putting a gold tooth in a dead dog.

My wife's 30-06 sports an older Leupold M8 4x scope.  It is an awesome scope, I love it.  4x is a little skinny if you are taking longer shots at smaller game like antelope, but it is fantastic for elk and plenty for 300-350 yard shots on deer.

Leupold.
Anything else is either overpriced, or less in quality.

It's my issue M4, not an AR15, and since I didn't pay for the rifle, scope, bullets or anything else I'm perfectly happy with it.

"easy" 600m hits with an issue M4 is a bold claim even if you were using Mk262.

To get back on track here's a good article by John Barsness on the subject of scope magnification.

Prone with a good solid rest and position, not too difficult. This is my profession and we practice in order to be able to do it well. Like I said, I don't pay for the ammo so I get to shoot a lot more than I would if it were a personal weapon. I'm also not concerned about ethical/humane kills when the target isn't a game animal or paper/steel.
