I am new to the page, I have read it before but till now never been a member. Me and two of my buddies where lucky enough to get drawn for the Dayton unit 162. We have all been hunting since we were kids, but mostly in Western Wa, and Montana, we have had some great success's in the past, and have killed some nice Bulls, but this is the first time for any of us hunting the Blues. I know there is a lot of private land, and have heard many different things, about how and where to hunt this unit.
My question to any of you that have been lucky enough to drawn this tag in the past, or live in the area is: Is there a list of land owners that will let you hunt on their land? Does the federal ground have any good Bulls on it and if so when? What happens after the spike hunters get going, do all the elk head for private land for safety? I would very much appreciate any info you have to give.
Thank you

My advice is to go scout and knock on doors. Not many on here will give good advice to someone that only joined because he got drawn for a quality bull tag in a unit they know nothing about. Fill up the tank and go. That's the way your going to get the best info. Is doing the research yourself.

Welcome to the site BD and congrats on the draw.
If you don't mind answering, I'm curious why you guys applied for a area you have never been to before. What was it that made you guys decide to apply for that tag?
I've been fortunate to have friends recommend hunts to me and been along with other friends on their hunts before applying in areas, I'm just curious if its sites like this, TV shows, magazines etc that convinces guys to do it is all. :dunno:
-
Welcome to the site! :hello: Good luck with your tags. Lookin forward to the after story!
-
Why did you post this in the deer section? :dunno:
-
I am a fan of helping with great tags, but I have to agree with Hunt and Mav, why join and ask for help as soon as you get a tag? You may get some help but if not, its a fun hunt and have a blast.

Don't get me wrong, I am all for helping and that wasn't the reason for my question. I'm seriously curious since no way would I risk my quality points on a hunt/area that I knew nothing about. There had to be something that led him to it, I just asked what it was. ;)
-
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say he heard about it through hunting fool, or people talking about it on this website.
-
Don't go knocking on doors go hunt the national forest I could tell you many places to hunt but don't want people pissed at me but if I had the tag I would hunt Chase mt or the rain water good luck hunt hard you will kill big bulls
-
How many points did you draw with? I have hunted this unit 14 years and it amazes me how many people draw and know nothing about it. I'm with every one else why would you put in for something you know zero about. :bash: Put the time in and it will be a good hunt.

You and me both man, its such a waste.

I believe if you contact city hall they have a list of names and numbers of landowners you could use to contact that way you have a name when you go knocking.
good luck to you. Also if you llok around this site you will find some pretty good info..

We know other hunting buddies that hunt in the blues, and we have been putting in for for that area for a number of years, and have always dreamed of getting drawn for what we considered to be one of the best elk units in the state. Now that we have drawn, the research begins, we are already planning one of many scouting trips. One of the reasons I joined this forum is to gain info on an area I don't know, isn't that one of the main reason there are sites like this, to help our fellow hunter?

Thats cool
I would hit your buddies up for first hand info too, sounds like they would be a reliable source.

You should have a great summer of scouting, and a wonderful hunt in the fall.

I won't beat you up about researching your apps, but you will find the earlier you get over there the better chances you have for getting some access. Many landowners over there will be getting a flood of doorknocks in the comming months, and right in the middle of when allot of them are trying to harvest. I would be as mindful as possible about private land boundries during your hunt people over there have allot of land not all is well marked, and, or fenced keep in mind many will prosecute tresspassers. I wish you luck that is a great tag.
-
Thanks for the reply SemperFidelis97 I have alway been very respectful of land owners, as I am one. We all have good GPS units with Wa state chips that show private land, state, BLM, and Federal, we have no excuse to be on any private land without permission.

That will be helpful. Do lots of glassing and cover as much NF as possible and rainwater you can find good elk all over the unit with work. The biggest bulls i have seen have been where most people don't want to go.
-
Thanks Roper, that is also may thought that after the rut bulls are going to be looking for a nice quite place to regain their straight and get ready for winter, I'm thinking a nice deep dark canon away from all the fuss is where I would be.
-
I have stopped applying for west side quality elk (since there really arent many left) and have been building points until I feel I have a fighting chance in the draw for a quality east side tag. I have yet to set a boot into that country but know that if I draw that tag I will certainly put in the miles doing some preseason scouting.
-
Elkburger, Do you put in for the elk multi season permit?
-
Elkburger, Do you put in for the elk multi season permit?
I have twice....Not Selected.......If I can draw that I could apply both sides. Next year I'm just gonna bite the bullet and buy the east side tag. Sorry guys, the odds will drop just a bit more. I will have 11 points going in next year.
-
I'll have 6 multi points and 13 elk points. Even if I don't get multi I'll be going eastside
-
That's where I was this year, 13 elk points and 4 multi points, but there really isn't any good units on the West side, other than the Margaret, and the Green river water shed. so been putting in for ghost points till this year.

Sent you a pm

Access is not an issue for most of the elk hunting in the dayton area. Most of it is in the Nat Forest and open to everyone. Wolf Creek and table rock are great areas. scouting wont help you to much now because the animals will be in different spots in the fall then they are now. My advice to anyone that gets this permit is to spend the deer season hunting in the Dayton area even if you don't normally do. The one year and probably the only year in your life that you draw this permit I would not care wether or not you get a deer at all and just consentrate on elk so spend your deer season in there and who knows that maybe you will get a nice buck to boot because they have them in there too if you are lucky. Big bull season starts the day after the deer season closes and by that time you should know right where the bull you want to shoot lives and hangs out. Its never a for sure thing because that country can eat you alive. We had tags in there in 2006 and 2007 and last year. We have one tag in there this year. The number of big bulls in there is way down from the 2006 and 2007. That is why they cut the permit numbers i think in half. Good luck! you will see them but by the time you get to them they seem to disappear.
-
:yeah:Good advice right there. I wouldn't EXPECT to get a deer, but if you put in the time on the boots and behind the glass they are in there.
-
Yeah go hunt Table Rock with a Dayton tag that would be awesome.
-
Our first trip will be just to get familiar with the area and find a camp spot, great idea on the deer hunting, we planned on being there a few days early to do some scouting, and locate some bulls, bonus to be able to deer hunt.
-
yeah honostly i would just scout, research, etc. All these guys draw these prime elk permits and ask for help. I'll help people with deer but at the same time im not gonna give out any knowledge of the elk in the area I've grown up hunting. I guess thats part of the adventure for you :) non the less good luck. hunt hard brother
-
i mean why put in for it if your gonna come on here and ask for advice. Southeast wa is sacred ground for me among manyothers. Scout the gmu do your homework and get in good shape because your gonna hunt your damn ass off
-
What type of tag is it????
Also who the crap cares about helping out a fellow hunter/site member? If i have the tag, Which I do, I would hope to get help, like I have, and I'm even a local. I know the area and still don't mind asking for help. I'm one man i cant be everywhere at once if somebody sees a nice bull and wants to share that with me that is great. The OP is only asking for help. He does not seem to be asking for people to hunt for him. Settle down guys help him out. I have always been of a mind that if i can help a person fill a tag i will. I have passed on tons of info to tag holders that I ran into in the past 10 years of archery hunting. It takes so much time to draw the tags why not help out? Chances are the bull you see will be dead before you have a chance to kill it anyway.
Bigdaddy, what type of tag is this? If it's archery..... sorry for this year and this year only i can't really help as I'm holding that tag in my pocket as well. If it's muzzy or rifle I'll be glad to help. Hell, you can even come over this way and we can go scout together. I'll show you as much of that country as I can. Unless of course you have archery tags. Then you are on your own. No hard feeling but after 10 years of waiting I got to try and stack the deck for myself.

 Great attitude Cory!
-
Amen Cory! I couldn't have said it better.
If my sacred ground was a draw only area, that only gives out a hand full of branched antler bull tags, and my chances of drawing it were really high, I would diffinally help out anyone that did get drawn, I believe that's being a sportsman, unless as Cory states I had the same tag for the same year, every hunter I know can respect that, by the way Cory I have the rifle tag.

I agree with borntoslay big time... bigdaddy, Just because a guy doesn't give out any info doesn't mean he's not at sportmans, in fact in my opinion I think its smart because the more info u give out only makes u nd ur family nd hunting buddies odds of drawing go way down.u help one guy nd overtime it turns into fifty

Well i hold firm to what I said. Biddaddy if you are coming over to scout let me know when i'll go out if I can. If i fill my tag and if i don't fill my tag i'll help get you into the area that i saw the bulls. It's NATIONAL FOREST everybody has a right to hunt it! Maybe i'm doing to wrong in some peoples eyes but i'll sleep ok knowing i helped out a fellow hunter and hope it's paid forward to others or even myself in the future.
-
I like your attitude Cory. Pass it forward.

My advice, careful on the advice you take. The Wolf Fork is all private and the Table Rock isn't even in the unit.I don't mind helping but I do it a PM if i'm going to do it.

The wolf fork is not all private, the upper half is forest, you just have to know where private starts. But yes, be careful to know where that is
-
Thanks for the info, i'm hoping a GPS with the wa state chip will help with where private stops, and federal begains.
-
What a bunch of rubbish telling someone they shouldn't put in for a draw unless they know the area. BS, look how many of you put in for AK hunts and how many of you put in for Montana, Wyoming, and other out of state hunts.... Yep- I can bet you do not have the area pre-scouted and know the lay of the land. But of course once drawn time comes - it is time to get the boots on the ground and contacts made for sure. Good luck too you, wish you all the success in this hunt.
-
If everyone who wanted to draw a blues tag hunted the general seasons, there would be a ton of hunters in there.. All units, every season. Same logic with becoming a local......Those cities would explode in population. Some folks are just blessed to have been born and raised in that beautiful country or lucky enough to get a job and settle into that area.

The guys on here are right. Table rock is not in the area. I meant to say Chase MT just up above Wolf Creek. Lots of Nat forest on the top end of Wolf creek.
-
I have never hunted the Blues and will continue not to till I am drawn for a tag.

From my understanding, the wolf fork is all private. North Touchet, the upper half is forest. But if you go poking around on wolf fork, you might run into a few locked gates.
