I am wanting to get some opinions on these two rounds. I am ready to get a new rifle and have it down to these two. I will be handloading. It will be a hunting rifle. Interested in experience anyone may have on these two. Thanks for the help.

I would opt for the 6.5-284. more powder volume, more velocity=better for the full range of critters around here.
-
6.5x284 would be more versatile for hunting applications for sure. Use 140's in it and enjoy. If your having a custom made, build a 6.5-06 Ackley and enjoy more performance.
-
Any big game animal at average hunting shot distances isn't going to be able to tell the difference between the two. The Creedmoor can be done on a short action easier than the 6.5-284. To truly do a 6.5-284 right. I have built my 6.5-284's on long actions so as to keep the longer VLD style bullets out of the powder column. This makes for a greater over all length so you need the long action for the combo to function reliably as a repeater. I would opt for the 6.5-284.

Any pics of them? Would love to see them... :)

Didn't you say you had a couple built in the past? How about some pics Dewey?
I imagine you already know about the first one I had built? I sold it to your buddy "Jim The Plumber" here. He won his first long range shoot with it. I had McMillan build that one on a Remington 700 long action , A5, Schneider 9 twist with a Vais brake. Shot like a house of fire, averaged 2-2 1/2" inches for five shot groups at 600yards with 95gr V-Max's. Jim and I had shot back to back 5 shot groups at a 1000yards that were no larger than 7 1/4" inches. 10 shots on target at a 1000 yards two different shooters (5 shots) each, measuring 7 1/4" . That was 13,14, 15 ???years ago, I've been through allot of rifles since then.

For a hunting rifle I would suggest the 6.5x284 but in a long action. They are both great rounds but the 284 will have a little more energy because of a higher velocity. But yes both of those 6.5 will do the trick.

Thanks Everbody. Appreciate these comments.

Have a couple Savage 10 Predators in 6.5 Creedmoor and one in 6.5/284 in stock..detach mag, fluted barrel, Max camo!
Give me a call if interested!
-
At the Moses Lake or Wenatchee location?
-
we have the 6.5 creedmoor at wenatchee the 284 is at moses lake both have fluted barrels!
-
We transfer between stores several times a week, so we can get them set up in either store!
-
My little bro got the 6.5 CM last year and that thing is a tack driver.
Either round is great imo you may want to look at a 260 as well (basically a 6.5 CM except everyone makes brass for it)
-
That's the three I started with. I eliminated the 260 and am down to these two. Seems like the 284 takes the cake.
-
Have another Savage 10 Max camo in 260 also!!
-
Depending on the application the animal wont know the difference. Its all about what looks best on paper and sometimes thats most of the fun. :chuckle:
Im just jealous you get to pick one up!
-
I have all 3 in stock!
Timber stalker, stop in if you can and lay your hands on one of these..will be glad to hook up another Hunt- Wa member!! Can even set it up with a Vortex scope package.!

I have the savage lr fluted 6.5x284 and its a great rifle for the money. Not to hi jack the thread but maybe hammer and mountain can tell me their favorite hunting load in 6.5x284 cuz they got the ruler across the back of the hand in my thread on that subject and I never got to ask that specifically. :chuckle: Get along now boys, I can see you all know your stuff and everybody's opinion is valuable here. Thanks and good luck to OP on getting a 6.5, its a bad ass little caliber.

I always play nice :). I used the 6.5-284 primarily for a varmint cartridge. For Rock Chucks and Coyotes. Most guys I shot with for several years there either shot the 6.5-284 or the 6.5-06 Improved for Coyotes and Chucks. None of us really ever cared about punching paper other than to get zero's or work up loads. I would rather spend a day hunting Chucks or Shooting Coyotes and not get anything than spend a day shooting on a range. Hair and fur is where it's at, the paper and steel will always be there.
A shooting partner and I settled on the 95gr V-Max and a appropriate charge of Varget. Great temperature tolerant stuff for using the same load year round. I shot 49 grains of Varget behind a 95gr V-Max with a Federal 210m primer and winchester brass. The load put me a hair South of 3500fps.
I still prefer a larger cartridge/ bullet for big game, just my thing. If I were you, I would load the 140gr Nosler Accubond and never look back.
Good luck!

ruler wasnt across my hand :) others maybe?

Savage F class, 30" 1-8" twist. 57 grains H1000 (over max, but fine in this rifle) 142 Sierra matchking, f210 primed 3150 fps. And opdinkslayer, no worries..there was alot on that other post (15 comments to be exact), not from me, but sorry I missed it! LOL! Gotta love internet warriors I guess?
