What time of year were you thinking of going? There are plenty of members on here that have boats to do this, maybe get some of them together and plan a trip so 10 or so could all go. $175.00/ea. pays for a lot fuel, bait, food and soda's :chuckle: I would think it could be done for a lot less per person :twocents:
Title: Re: HUNT-WA STURGEON TRIP
Post by: NW-Eric on October 16, 2008, 10:12:08 AM
yah it could be done for a lot less, i was just thinking about going with the guide again and filling it with members instead of my usual fishing partners, but yah if we got some members together that had boats it would be significantly cheaper. if people chime in with boats we could pick a time and place and start planning.

I have a boat that can fish 4 guys easily, 5 if I have to. I would be in for it, and I know it wouldn't cost us $175/person.
Title: Re: HUNT-WA STURGEON TRIP
Post by: NW-Eric on October 16, 2008, 11:31:00 AM
sweet if we get several boats going it could also turn into a friendly competition. ;)

so should i scrap the guide idea and we just go for a self funded trip, every one who goes can just ante up gas money for the boat owner?
Title: Re: HUNT-WA STURGEON TRIP
Post by: cohoho on October 16, 2008, 11:39:28 AM
I'd be in.  Normally can run down there and put gas in truck (100), boat (50-60), launch fees (3-5), buy bait (25-30)for about 200 bucks, divide that by 4, each would have to pay about $50 per person.  Right now I'm kind of screwed for any day but Sundays due to starting a new job and kids hockey..  Might be good thing to plan after folks have harvested their red meat for the year...  I can fit four additional folks but rather run with four total.. oops, I think three since Ray (no better DJ or anchor man out there :chuckle:) has a spot secured....  Cheaper than a guide, but probably do as well, at least from what I have seen at the docks on some guides in different parts of the Columbia..  Although- I have not fished at the dam, only lower river (Longview and Astoria areas).  So lets see who would be interested in a trip and maybe we can get one going...

Right on Coho, I can fish 4 comfortably from my boat as well, WF70 has to go though, I need a anchor puller :chuckle:

Hey guys I would love to get out and do some fishing/meet up with some members on here.  Count me in for sure as long as the timing is right!  Used to have a Custom Weld Cobra so I know what most boat owners are talking about when trying to find good fishing/cost splitting partners.  BOAT Bring on another Thousand!  Lets get a date together.

Yep, I'm down. I don't have an anchor worthy of holding at Bonneville though. Would be nice if we did the trip out of Kalama or something. I can do either Saturdays or Sundays.

MOVED LIST TO FRONT OF POST
Title: Re: HUNT-WA STURGEON TRIP
Post by: Antlershed on October 16, 2008, 02:04:56 PM
I was including myself in the 4-5 guys, so I would be taking spot 1 in my list as I think the others would be too. I really would only like to take 4 total in my boat, but if it came down to it, I could squeeze 5.

I am definitely interested. So long as it does not conflict with deer/elk seasons  ;)

I would also be super interested in a Sturgeon trip, and since I live in Vancouver, you can use my coffee pot to restock the Thermos! :)  And then pick me up.  I've never been, would love a crash course!
Title: Re: HUNT-WA STURGEON TRIP

We could hold a random drawing of interested partys for which boat ya fish in, that way then everyone would get a chance at possibly meeting guys from here that they wouldnt have else wise.  Another thought, get enough boats could have a derby?  Maybe derby winning boat, money goes to boat owner to offset his boat payment or boat espenses for that month, or overall derby winner takes it all.  Just some fun thoughts.
Title: Re: HUNT-WA STURGEON TRIP
Post by: NW-Eric on October 16, 2008, 03:12:52 PM
thats what i was thinking each captain picks his anchor man... and once we have a list we could draw names from a hat at the launch.

as of right now it looks like there are 3 more spots... unless we find more boats and im still working on my buddy if i get him to agree thats 6 more spots so cross the fingers.
Title: Re: HUNT-WA STURGEON TRIP
Post by: Antlershed on October 16, 2008, 03:35:57 PM
Any volunteers for anchor man on my boat?  :chuckle: It is really quite easy with the bouy system. Most of it is just pulling rope into the boat while I drive up to the anchor thats floating on the surface.

antlershed, if my buddy doesnt go then ill be your anchor man i do it all the time on his boat plus i tie a mean sturgeon bait.

i would be interested in going depending on a date and if we need another boat i could probably talk my dad into lending me his 26' hydro sport that will fish 4 with room for a 5th if needed.

Sounds good to me. I really don't care who ends up in my boat. I also have all the gear we will need for the trip. If you have a lucky Sturgeon rod you wanna bring thats fine, I will just leave one of mine at home.

Nov 2nd works for me, I can't go this, nor next weekend... Spokane (kids Hockey) then Vegas (craps baby craps) for those weekends...

I like the ideal of throwing in some cash ($20) from everyone into a pot and winner is divided between the top four folks: biggest, most, smallest, least....

Yea, just throwiing that date out, probably won't work for everyone till everything is in the Red Meat freezer, but we'll see what happens..  I still got to clear that date through my higher chain of command..  Again folks give it some thought to a date and we'll see wh we can do with as a group.  Won't work for all but if we can get 3-4 boats, it'd be fun...

Thank ya! a little confidence can go a long way, and lets just say im not new to the sturgeon game or the waters below the dam~! Im pretty confident....  but we need to set the bar for this shin dig.. do we do it on points.. like 25 for a shaker.. 150 for a oversize and 250 for a keeper? or just number of keepers on board? also to even it out every boat should have the same number of rods fishing no matter the number of people? just a thought....

Brent- we could talk about it on my boat.... I just wouldnt start the convo.... and hunting season? that was over in september!!.. lol see there I go again.... anyways this little thing should be fun assuming we can get it all figured out, although that late in the season normally is not the best, by that time the water is usually below 55 and the dinos dont feed as much,.. but hey you never know, should be fun either way!!! :tung:

I was going to suggest a legit pic of every fish if we were to do the points system, id hope everyone would and could be honest.. after all integrity is a big thing, but just keepers is cool as well......

if the fishin isnt going to be hot i think the points system would work best throw a tape measure next to the fish and take a picture isnt that hard.  oh and i think the winning team should get hunt-washington.com hats  :chuckle:

I'm also not in the points and derby. Another turn off for me. I suppose hunting season is over in September for some people but not for people who like thumping geese which is much more fun than fishing. Have fun on your derby.

Unless we can get a good system down, I think it would be better left as just a fun day of fishing and a way to meet new people. Also, I'm out if we do it at Bonneville. I don't have the anchor for that and don't plan on buying one just for this trip...

how heavy is your anchor? im willing to bet my 23ft kofffler is heavier then your boat and I use a 30lb anchor and never have a issue holding even in 3-4  mph current.... just make sure you let out enough line and you should be fine, also alot of the good water isnt in the main current, quite a lot of the water this time of year has little or no current, and they mess with it all day.... id bet you would be ok....

How much does your boat weigh? I think I only have a 22 or 26lb anchor.

Id bet youd be fine, like I said most of the areas I fish are not in the main current, and over half the time I have had to be on the kicker to stay straight..... this whole deal sounds fun and we can talk about hunting!!! you cant pass that up

I was reminded a little bit ago that I can't do the 22nd. We are headed east that day to chase Muleys for a few days.

I have the whole CR system and wind socks. In the past I had heard you needed a much bigger anchor (more like a 4 prong on each side). I think I will be ok, but thanks for the offer.

I think I am going to have to wait until next year guys, maybe we can put something together that will allow more folks that are hunting right now a chance of getting out. Until then, I will be up for the Cowlitz this winter, I can make it down to Blue Creek in about 90 minutes.
