Hunters may apply for new deer hunt
in Okanogan County through Sept. 4

OLYMPIA - Twenty lucky hunters will have an opportunity to hunt for deer on 6,300 acres of Okanogan County rangelands that will open to public hunting for the first time this fall.

Hunters who want to apply for the limited hunt should contact the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) at (509) 754-4624 or (360) 902-2515 from Aug. 15 through Sept. 4.

Twenty applicants will be chosen through a random drawing to receive access permits to the property in the Ninemile Creek area near Oroville.  Part of that property was recently acquired by WDFW, with the rest remaining under private ownership, said Mick Cope, WDFW upland game manager.

"This private-public partnership is part of a concerted effort by the department to preserve hunting opportunities in Washington state," Cope said.  "This is a quality hunt, open to the general public, without any additional fees beyond the cost of a hunting license and the standard tags."

Of the 20 access permits available this year, five will be reserved for bowhunters, five for muzzleloaders and 10 for hunters using modern firearms.  Cope noted that only deer may be hunted on the property, and that the access permits do not allow hunters to harvest more than the one deer allowed per year by their hunting license.

Area deer-hunting seasons are Sept. 15-30 for bowhunters, Oct. 6-12 for muzzleloaders and Oct. 13-21 for hunters using modern firearms.

WDFW will hold the drawing for access permits Sept. 6.  Hunters who are drawn will receive an access permit and a boundary map in the mail.

Do you think the drawing on Sept 6th will be a practice drawing or for real. :chuckle:

I called and spoke with the gal who answered the phone. She indicated that this was something that just came up that the property was available to hunt. No points will be burned, it sounds like it could be an alright deal.
You just have to call after tomorrow and give your name, address and wild id number over the phone for them to enter you into the draw. No e-mail or online applications will be available.
I will be hunting over in Winthrop the rifle season anyway so I might as well put in for the hunt.

This a whitetail or mule deer area?  To be honest, have never been to Okanogan country, but would be worth checking it out if a guy drew.

The permit and map will probably reach you after the season is over. :chuckle:

Ninemile used to hold lots of Muleys, but now mostly whitetails.  Fletch would probably be pretty familiar with the area if he chimes in.  He hunts up in that neck of the woods alot with his family.

I'll be calling.  I'm planning on hunting the entire season, on private and federal land within spitting distance of Nine Mile.  Haven't been in that particular area in years, but should be worth a shot.  Like others said, used to be a lot of good mulies, but I'm happy with a nice whitetail.

This is just a access permit, to the property. Whatever the rules are for the general season hunt in that unit would apply.

No i asked the gal on the phone about the season. Its not open for the general season. Its open for whatever it says in the email. So for archery that means sept.15-30 not sept. 1st-30 like the general season. That area is also open for late season archery but the access permit is not. So take a close look at the dates.............

The way I understand it is it is general season rules just get some access to some new game dept land.  The land has been hunted recently just not open to the public...private ownership has allowed limited hunting...Im not sure it is even worth it though probably not many deer in that area...  :chuckle:

if we draw the tag, can we Give the tag to whoever we want? or is it primarily just for that individual hunter. I would put in and give it to someone here who would use it to increase the odds of actually getting it.............
