Title: 180" Bucks
Post by: Ironhead on June 25, 2013, 06:53:09 PM
Let's see some true 180" bucks. There has been a lot of big buck talk on here lately and I would like to see what it takes to make a 180".

Here is one of my MT hunting buddies and his 192" dark horned beauty. We all sat around it in awe for hours at camp after he harvested it.

That's my point Jack. 180"ers are tough to come by. Let's see if we can post a few here to show how unique and rare they really are. Post that bad boy up Justin.

Both these are around 180 gross but would probably fall short net.  The first is 2011 WA archery buck; the second is 2010 Montana rifle.

Sfrenger, unfortunately someone already beat us to that one:-(. That is a calendar pic created using the rack of the mundy buck which measured 49" wide!!!  We can only hope he has some lingering genetics still out there.  I think about that buck Everytime I climb a steep ridge, or walk a couple extra miles, etc.  Just knowing that bucks of that caliber exist is all the motivation I need:-). Good luck in the entiat, I hope to see a write up and a nice pic later this fall!

Interesting take phool.  I ran into a guy while hunting mule deer last year who claimed to have killed multiple 400 class bulls.  We got to talking and swapping hunt pics and he told me he'd rather have my 2011 archery buck than any of his bulls.  Blew me away as I always figured most hunters considered big bulls the holy grail of hunting and that I was one of the few mule deer fanatics.

I too have a friend with multiple big bulls, 10 over 390", most of those over 400", spends gobs of money every year trying to get the one trophy that has eluded him, a 200" mule deer.

Antlerking posted his opinion on numbers seen before actually seeing a 180" or bigger buck and I agree for the most part, but IMO even those numbers are optimistic.

Doublelung had a great post on this subject a couple years ago, wish I could find it.

Is it just me or is anyone else doing math after looking at each pic in this thread?  All the posted bucks are shooters and fine trophies but 180 is pretty special.  It takes a couple nice long main beams, good spread credit, and some tall deep forks to get to 180.  Either that or a crap pile of kickers to boost the numbers.  Mass and good brow tines also help but some bucks though phenomenal trophies just aren't configured right to get there.  Phool, 200 has proved elusive for me as well.  I set a goal to get one DIY on public land and haven't yet closed the deal.  I'm only 34, though, so hopefully I have at least 20 more good years of trying and I'll enjoy every minute of it!!

Here is one. This guy was about 27 inches wide or so and had about 5" eyeguards as best as I could figure through the spotting scope. Those things were rediculous. I figured him at around 181. His back forks on his right side were sooo deep, left side wasn't quite as deep but still decent. If he doesn't net 180+ he was sure flirting with the idea.

Well, I have a dandy of a whitetail on one of my cameras. He's related to a buck that i've been hunting for going on 4 or 5 years now. Slippery little punk. I think I have a pic. hang on, K, here they are. If I haven't connected I might have to come back the last couple days of the mule deer season and see if I can't get this big boy.

Old news, but this was a buck I took a few years ago in Colorado.  Grossed a hair over 180 when Charlie scored him.  Don't know/care much about scores, but I understand it's generally tough for a buck to make that with just a 3 points on a side.

No shame in taking that buck, Sfrenger!  It's always exciting to have a big buck spotted and it certainly makes it easier to hold out!  Don't give up on that big one you've been chasing either.  I hunted my 2011 archery buck for an entire season(I had a multi tag) and finally got my chance in late bow season.  It's a special moment to take a buck you've worked so hard for that you feel you know him personally!
Alan, that is a stud buck.

Thanks for that Kurt. Wish I lived somewhere close to entiat. I would have all the big bucks scouted out already. That buck i've been after is probably one of the biggest whitey's i've ever seen. Only seen 2 others alive that were bigger. The year that I had this guy pegged, he broke off one of his points. It's taken a lot of moving my cameras and packing in hundreds of pounds of salt before finding him again. Unfortunately I have a cat that has been killing a lot of deer. I have had this guy on my camera twice and had him sneak up behind me while I was rattling in my tree stand. Stupid west side tree hugging granolas killed more deer and elk than they will ever know by outlawing the use of bait and dogs.

I'm tryin' man. That's the problem with these damn things. They prefer hunting at night. Wish we were able to shoot them with night scopes. You're allowed to kill yoties with night scopes so why not cats? Anywhoo, looks like i'm going to be spending most of my days this summer and fall in Entiat. Probably just go out and try to get that cat this year. Anyone know what kind of call to use on them? I hear cow calls work well. Anyway, keep posting those big bucks. I hear the g2's are key to scoring well with a muley. Your buck is a stud and I would shoot it instantly, but I did notice the g2's were a little weak. Still, wow....what a buck.

In the end a gross score is all about total inches, it doesn't matter if you have a short g2 if the buck has 20+" of extra bone. I believe that buck is a 6x5 and not a 4x4. ;)

 Nets are for fish!!!

I have no idea..... but it looks like a different buck to me.? :dunno: I have heard of some collered deer that made some amazing journeys covering alot of miles, after winter the one doe traveled like 50 or better miles as the crow flies. That was just a quick look at the map and kinda estamating miles, It could have been more than that.

Sfrenger , I can safely say its a different buck. This buck lived and died 80 miles from pend orelle county. ( I know its spelled wrong) trail can pics of that whitey were on here a couple years ago. 2011 same year it was killed. He was a local legend and fell to a local guy. He was also quite a visible buck during his life.

There are similarities..... but its a different deer.

Ok Buckman, I'll take your word for it. I'd have to admit that 80 miles is a stretch for a whitetail to travel, but dang that buck looks like mine. If that buck scored soo high, why hasn't anyone seen it in the magazines and tv shows? That has to rank very high on the b&c score.

[/quote]

That buck is in the B&C book.

That's awesome. It's great to know that washington can grow deer to that caliber. Thanks for sharing. He's a hawg for sure. I would burn my entiat tag on him for sure.

It's definitely motivating. I am always amazed at what this state can produce when it comes to whitetail.

Hey lemondog. Do You have a pic of that big buck that was shot a few years ago in the swakane? I believe I heard you were in the same camp
Title: Re: 180" Bucks
Post by: lemondog on July 17, 2013, 09:21:34 PM
Nope, it was another guy camping in my favorite spot. My pal had the tag and we got on that buck but he somehow (the guy is a ace shot) hit it in the horns. The other guy killed it in the next canyon over 2 days later. Search "hole in the horn buck" and you will find it. Real nice buck!
