Title: "Broadhead Only" Block Target? Why?
Post by: returnofsid on June 28, 2013, 08:01:30 AM: Yesterday, I went to one of our local sporting goods stores to look at targets. I noticed two inexpensive ($45.00-$55.00 range) block targets, made by Morrell, that were listed as "Broadhead Only." Now I can understand why some targets are "Field Tip Only," but have no idea why a target could be shot with broadheads but not field tips. Anyone have any insight into this?

Cut tinto 2ftx2ft squares and ducktape together for a broadhead target. Cheep and works great. I have one and use it every year to make sure everythign is flying ok. cost is about $10

I was actually thinking about that last night, wondering how feasible it would be! Would this type of target also work with field tips?

I'd even wondered if I could use a piece of this to replace the outer layer of a Block Black cube target. The core is still in great shape but the outer layer is completely gone, at the center. I'd thought about cutting a 12" square of the Block Black cube out, replacing it with a 12" square of the pink high density foam insulation.

I had one from Cabelas like that. It was nigh impossible to pull out field points, easy on BHs.

Interesting. I definitely don't want pink stuff melting on my shaft!

I may have to experiment a little with a couple different types of the sheet high density foam insulation. I have 4 aluminum arrows I can experiment with, that I won't be hunting with.

Post by: Machias on July 03, 2013, 04:39:06 AM: You can make one of the best archery targets, for field points for, around $8. Last for years. Take 2 four foot long 2x6s, 2 steel rods, all threaded. Drill a hole in each end of the 2x6s. Fill the middle with cardboard sandwiched sideways, once it's full between the boards tighten it down and walla you have an awesome field point target. Once you shoot the crap out of one side turn it around. Once that side is toast, replace the cardboard. One side will last you all year. This photo shows straps, but I like the all thread rods better.

That looks like a really simple and inexpensive route to go!

That was my first thought as well. I suppose you could easily add plastic to the top layer or even wrap the top and the top few inches with shrink wrap.

I've tried this but my chickens just eat it. :bash: It also ends up leaving pink bits all over. :twocents:

My Rhinehart is holding up well, though I only shoot broadheads into one side of the replaceable core. I had a Morrel (I think) Six Shooter and it would leave green and black foam melted onto my arrows. >:(
