Title: Boots?
Post by: Labs07 on July 01, 2013, 02:45:27 PM: So after 7 years I need a new pair of boots. My current boots are Danner torphy 600 insulated. I am open for some duscussion on what others wear and have had great success with. Thanks for the help guys and gals!

Remember not to buy boots based on others recommendation. While they may tell you they are well built, durable, good ankle support, don't leak, etc.... The way a boot fits is the most important.

My feet are in good shape but get cold quickly due to previous frost bite issues. Like all of us I hike uphill and downhill alot durnign elk and deer season, I have a different pair of boots for upland birds.

Post by: JPhelps on July 08, 2013, 03:03:56 PM: I would recommend a mountain boot then. They are pricier but the Kenetrek, Lowa, Hanwag, scarpa, schnees, etc.... Whichever one fits your foot the best.

I believe all of these manufacturers have insulated options.

Post by: huntnnw on July 08, 2013, 10:19:33 PM: Ill tell u right now after owning danners, rockies and others of the same class of boots under $180...there is nothing like putting on and hiking in Kenetreks, Meindl and the other highend boots..the support in steep,rocky and slick terrain is so much better. And not to include having on a 80lb pack with good supported boots is a huge plus! Once u own a pair u wil wonder why u havent had them for years

Post by: haugenna on July 08, 2013, 10:23:50 PM: I have owned Danner Pronghorns and enjoyed wearing them. They fit well and were comfortable. I did get some ankle pain though after a lot of side hilling and steep grade. I tried out Zamberlands this last year and the support was much better than the Danners and the ankle pain went away.

Bye the way Kenetreks are the most comfortable boots I have ever worn (but I have a foot that fits them). On the otherhand my Lowas seem to have held up a little better but are a little too narrow and not as comfortable.

Agreed on the fit statement. I can't get Kenetreks to fit to save my life, and I tried every insole in the store.

I love my Lowas though. 8)

Post by: Kazekurt on July 10, 2013, 03:22:14 PM: The kenetrek terrain model that was on camofire recently with the gaiters is good but not as good as the mountain guide and mountain extreme models. Once in a blue moon, the better models are on camofire but you'll only have about 5 minutes to "pull the trigger" before they're gone. I bought a pair of mountain extremes in the spring of 2012 for $239 and felt like I stole them! I now have two pairs of extremes and will without hesitation say they are the best hunting boot I've ever owned!

I have cabelas meindl Canada hunter and like them. I put sofsole foot soles in and they are very comfortable. Took a lot of break in though. Good luck.

This was my first use of the Hanwag boots on anything longer than a 3 mile hike, and after finishing the mountain, I probably have about 25 - 30 miles total on them, best boot I've ever owned. I think they are a better made boot than the Kenetreks.

I have flat, really flat, skinny little girl feet and my Kenetreks work for me. I do feel the heal slipping a bit but it has yet to make me change my mind about them.

I actually ended up buying La crosse boots because they didnt slip in the heel with my wool socks I like. I have about as narrow a foot as you can get and super high arches (yes I have gorgeous feet) never had but one pair of aerobics shoes that actually had an arch support touch my arch. Inserts also can shift and move so relying on them to fix a bad fitting boot is a crap shoot. my boots are nearing the end of their lifespan (may get 2 more seasons out of them) ....do not relish doing the boot shopping thing again... :bash: :bash:

Steve is a super smart fella when it comes to boots. Just got a pair of Lowa Khumbu 2 from him with their sweet footbeds. As said above, you will find no better customer service or knowledge.

I have the cabelas/miendle Perfect boot and love it. Be aware it has a cork footbed that forms to your foot. After wearing them for a while they start to feel loose, at that point add the provided shims beneath the footbeds. (Didja read the instructions that came in the box?)

Post by: sboada on August 08, 2013, 11:33:24 AM: I own both Kenetrek and Schnees. Still can't quite get used to the heel slippage of teh Kenetreks. Have about 20 miles or so on them and still an issues. The Schnees Beartooths have been amazing so far. Perfect fit right out of the box.

Best boot ever in my opinion, but you shoulda done some more shopping. I'm getting ready to order my fifth pair of the extremes, and was in shock when I couldn't find them for any cheaper than $410. Even at that, they came with free Kenetrek gaitors.

As for hunting, no thanks. I've tried the hunting boots, and I feel other high end companies are much further ahead. :twocents:
