I am going to a wedding next year in Hawaii, And would like to go on a pig hunt while I am there. Does anybody have any info or experience hunting there? I believe we will be on Oahu?

Oh and I would prefer to hunt with dogs if possible.

I very much recommend Pat Fisher of Hawaii Safaries but i dont believe he does the dogs. My family and i had a great time hunting pigs when we went to Maui for my wedding last year.

I did some pig hunting on Oahu about 15 years ago. I have a friend who grew up and lives there. We used dogs and a machete. That's the way they did it. We ended up with 3 in two days. Quite the experience!

Ill tell you why they didn't use guns. Two weeks before I got there one of there buddy's in their crew was shot and killed when a pig rushed them and during the commotion and panic a bad decision was made. And I will say the pigs expired fast with a machete behind the shoulder.

My wife surprised me with a hunt while on vacation on Maui ~7 years ago. It was a great time. We hunted with dogs and a knife, it would have been difficult any other way. No need for a gun. I would highly recommend it this way, otherwise it would just be an expensive prairie dog shoot. I kept the meat and it was great.

bearbaito6; I live here on Oahu. Alot really depends on what time of the year you are coming and what your weapon of choice is. The hunting here is not like it is in the states. Instead of the entire state being broken up into game units with similar/identical seasons, Hawaii has pockets of hunting areas that you can hunt. Every hunting area here is different with their seasons... some allow hunting year round, some only have up to six months of hunting, some have archery, rifle and dog seasons... some areas are archery only. However, you can pretty much do whatever you want if you are able to hunt on private property. It really isn't too tough to figure out though. It will cost you $95 for a non-resident license. You can take the route of Pat Fisher but really you can do it on your own pretty easily. Being a Non-Islander you are not going to have too many locals willing to take you out with their dogs unless you know someone already. It's funny talking to some of the locals about the pig hunting and they have that look of shock on their face when you tell them you have shot multiple pigs with a bow and without the use of dogs. My wife and I heard the best time to hunt them was in the morning but after alot of time with boots on ground we figured out that in the evening time is alot better. We have shot 5 thus far, wounded another 3 that we could not find. Pigs are very resilient and even though you make a fatal shot such as the three we could not find they managed to slip away. We have seen dozens of others but chose to pass on them as I am looking for that pig that breaks the 250+ lb mark or has very large cutters. I am able to hunt on a chunk of private property which I have shot two boars on and have a few others on trail cam spotted. I have also been able to shoot a few on public land. Like I said it really depends on the time of year you come and weapon of choice. If you are able to make it before I leave the Island in January 2015 I would not mind taking you out. If you come during the months of February-July you can do archery for Feral Goat. During the months of August-September you can hunt them with rifle. People often ask you "why would you want to hunt goats"? It is hard to explain just how steep and rugged the country is where these things are located. Oahu doesn't have the biggest goats but climbing 2,500 vertical feet in the terrain these things live in is the most exciting part of it. Not to mention a GREAT photo op of the ocean from on top of the mountain. Scott

There are more pigs on the big island, there are quail, turkeys, grouse too. Not sure what kind of hoops you jump through to hunt on (PTA), Pohakuloa Training Area. The Army runs it. Or you can look into Parker Ranch.
However,
Ranger91298 has offered to take you out, I would take it.

It is kind of a pain to hunt on PTA as it depends largely on training cycles there. However, right across the road on the big mountain it is open year round for goats and sheep and you can shoot as many as you want in a day. The only problem is there is several different types of sheep, including Mouflon that do alot of cross-breeding. I do believe it is one pig a day though. I have thought about going there with the family but have never got around to it. Thus far I have only hunted on Oahu, Lanai and Molokai.
