Title: Interchangeable Blade Knives
Post by: MLHSN on July 05, 2013, 04:24:02 PM: I like the idea of getting an interchangeable blade knife for field dressing. I noticed the Havalon Piranta knives seem to be the go to. Does anyone know of any brands that make a similar knife but cheaper?

I use my Havalon for everything now including skinning. Just can't seem to put the razor sharp thing down.

Post by: carpsniperg2 on July 05, 2013, 04:28:29 PM: Havalon's are pretty dang cheap at 35.00 you can get the blades pretty cheap as well. If you want another one that is even cheaper but still works good. You can go to a folding box cutter using normal razor blades. They are a little tuffer then the havalon blades but not quite as sharp. I skinned to many animals to even remember just using a box cutter. The havalons are wicked sharp and don't take to much abuse. I have snapped more then a few if you are doing anything more then really skinning with them.

Post by: carpsniperg2 on July 05, 2013, 04:33:49 PM: Yeah the plastic ones have a little thicker handle on them and are around 35.00 the metal ones are a little thinner profile and around 50-60.00 or so.

I still like a little bigger knife for breaking animals down and field dressing. The 60xt blades are longer and been the ones that are breaking more. The shorter 22 "I think that is the numer" Has been working well and seems to take a little more.

I have the same one. Great knife only draw back is what you see above. I have had the same issue when breaking down animals. Snapping off blades. Then you have to try to get the old blade off while not slicing yourself open.

I bought a Kershaw set many years ago and IMO they can't be beat for the price.

Post by: Eli346 on July 07, 2013, 06:26:48 PM: I carry the Havalon but also have a decent fixed blade for the heavy work. The Piranta is a great knife but be careful. I also carry a multi-tool for changing blades as it can be a little tricky with bloody hands.

Well said I do the same, great bird knives as well.

The saw with my Kershaw set comes in handy for cutting the pelvise or fire wood!
