Title: One eye open or both... any advantages hunting?
Post by: JWhite22 on July 05, 2013, 06:23:08 PM
so I've noticed that some people I think...keep both eyes open when shooting there bow? I've always closed my left eye when shooting right handed, but recently tried with both eyes open and it still seems like my dominate eye can sight the targeted pinned and can shoot accurately.

What way do you guys shoot? is there an advantage to either? While hunting does it have any advantages

If you keep both eyes open, you will not forget to close one in the heat of the moment....

Also, when shooting rifle or bow, with both eyes open, your brain receives more light input which allows your pupils to be dilated smaller.  This gives you more depth of field and a greater range of the world that is in focus.

Both open also allows you to see stuff sneaking up on your "off" eye side more easily.  Unless you shoot non-dominant, or your eyes are really close to equally dominant and tend to switch back and forth, you should not have a problem with both open.

Thanks for the input! I started shooting archery in 7th grade and hunted a couple years, but stopped because baseball and others sports took over. I have started shooting again this year at age 32 and don't have buddies that I shoot with so when I have questions like this I appreciate the feed back! I like the full view that you get when shooting with both eyes open and the accuracy is still there it does take some getting used to. I'm looking for the best technique that makes me most deadly come fall and didn't want to be shooting in a manner that would screw me up in the field. So luckily either way I do it I'm still able to shoot straight

Look at pictures of most top shooters.  Their non-dominate eye will vary from wide open in low light to only slightly open in bright light.  While at the same time the dominate eye always remains very much wide open.  I don't notice it happening to myself but I know it does.  I think the body automatically adjusts to give best visibility through the peep.  Close one eye and the whole body becomes increasingly tense.  Perhaps a side effect of your subconscious being unable to regulate the light and clarity as it does with both eyes open.

Good post Lokidog

Yes this is a very good post  My dad taught us from day one to shoot with both eyes open ..I have tried to teach a few people to shoot with both eyes open and some catch on easily and others not so easily ...But one thing I do know is the ones the caught on they are much better shots now ..really comes in handy on moving targets ..you can pick up on the target much quicker and see the whole picture much better ...again ...good post

Both for me. It also helps your brain in automatically judging distance.
