Mine will be all red rock. Channel is too shallow for Dungies. I like rocks better anyway. Harder to get the meat out but I think it tastes better

He is over there for the next couple of weeks. You 2 work it out and let me know.
I'm about ready to start long lining "White Fish"
-
Brought up twenty on the opener. Haven't been out anymore yet.
-
We collected 19 dungies on the morning of the 4th. Coulda got the last one in ut we had plenty and didn't want to stay on the water any longer. Festivities were calling.
-
Caught...............well ZERO. :'( My first time crabbing so for all I know im doing it wrong. I was in hood canal.
-
10 of us limited today and yesterday both 120 crab in 2 days.
-
5 days so far and we have 145 dungies and 4 rocks.
-
Anyone crabbing off hat?
-
21 so far in hood canal it was a slow opener this year.
-
Been off of Hat. Lots of females, but still able to scratch out a limit.
-
Good...was going to fish the usual spots from last season.gonna be out sunday?
-
0 ... we're going out camping this weekend with all our gear in tow so here's to hoping! :EAT:
-

Nope - taking a nice long motorcycle ride and checking trail cams on Sunday.
-
Still 0 in Area 7.... Although I've reminded two sets of people that crabbing is not open yet. :bash: to both!
-
We didn't do too bad in M.A. 9. This big guy made our legal ones look like babies! :yike:
-
Wow....some beasts! Bait of choice right now? I'm planning on using flounder, turkey, and some koke carcasses.
-
We catch fresh sole/flounders and hang 4 or 5 in a pot and let em soak a couple hours. Always fresh bait. Keeps the "Warden" from getting too bored when we can catch our bait while we're waiting to pull the pots.
-
Love hanging flounder baits. We call 'em flounder bombs. My go to flounder rig is a little cannon ball sinker, swivel, leader, small steelhead jig tipped with turkey...drift and drag it along he bottom. My hunch is it looks like a tiny shrimp...they just hammer it and the bait stays on really well.
-
I've thought about trying jigs of some kind but end up using a piece of horse neck clam on a 3/0 hook. This weekend we ended up with a good size sole and bullhead so we kept them and fried 'em up last nite,. The bullhead has to be a really big one before I'll keep 'em for frying.
-
Never ate bullhead......they get sliced and thrown in the pot!
-
I slice up the smaller ones but the big ones that ya don't get very often go home with us. They're good eaten, nice white meat and not any different than the rest of the bottom dwellers.
-
We have only been out the once and used trout scraps. We normally fish for bait while the pot is out too but, from the dock, we were only catching 2" bullheads and flounder. Young'uns from this year's hatch I'd imagine. Very frustrating. Oh, and the 2" pile perch that we couldn't keep off the line.
On a side note, out trout lake is over run with yellow perch too. Been there 5 or 6 times now and no trout to show for it, only 2-3" yellow perch. :bash:
-
DoubleJ....those pile perch are excellent bait for lings....keep a few for future use. Lets see a pic of your new crabbing craft!

I don't fish for lings. Never have tried. I did catch and eat a 2lb pile pearch when I was a teen and it was pretty good. These are nowhere's near that size though.
I'll take pics when I get home. Have to get a motor. Only oars right now. Needs a 10 horse. The one my dad has is broken he says.
-
Are the pile perch legal for crab bait?
-
Anyone know a good place to toss some pots from a dock?
-
I did very, very good up on Camano. used just plain turkey legs. 65 ft of water
-

I know of a place or two but nowhere where you're at

Just head out to Kayak Point....or wait and just go bear hunting soon.

nice
-
Cant ask for better weather....floating off south hat......two pulls, 7 big dungies
-
I crabbed in the Hood Canal the last couple days. Caught 15 on Thursday. 14 Friday and haven't checked the lots again.... All dungies. Some over 7 inches.
-
Stopped at 12....called it goid enough. Got some good gopro footage....working it up now.
-
Left 6 pots at Quartermaster over night. One of my buddies was late this morning so we right after salmon before checking the pots. When we did, we found one pot was missing, 3 pots were completely emply and the other two had a combined 4 Dungee's and 2 nice rock crab.
Pretty crappy haul for an over night soak and 3 guys to share with :bash: :bash: :bash:
I hate thieves :mgun2:
-
Man............I'm beat. Had a good morning on the water. We did better shallower than we did deeper. Got 12 keeper dungies from six and a half to seven and half. Used a mix of chicken, herring, and flounder. From the GoPro I learned a few things. Mainly, crab will come and go. I saw a few that looked like keepers leave when another was coming in. Very cool to see the crab pot view.

Nice dogfish trying to get in
-
Yep...they are cool. Feels good to get 12 and call it good. We could have limited with one more soak but had plenty. Gopro worked perfect.
-
That's really neat video h2O! Thanks!
A slip ring pot would work great where you're crabbing.
-
Love the gopro crab pot videos its really cool to see what goes on down there.
-
H2O. How long from the time you dropped the pot until the time there was 5 or 6 in there?
-

:yeah:
-
I only had footage from two drops. Running constantly sucks the batter life. So...on the first drop no crabs showed up for about 15 minutes. On the second drop it only took about 5. When there are a lot of crab around the pot they come and go as the gate is open. The dogfish showed up right away and as you can see they really tried to get to the bait.
-
I was asking because if you could, over time, track when about the most crabs were in the pot, you could best time when to pull the pot. If it takes an hour for it to fill to maximum crab and over the next 3 hours, the numbers flux as crabs go in and out, you could deduce the best time to pull pots for maximum crab. I think everyone here would benefit from this info
-
It was all over the place.......no real patten about when during the whole soak. Luck of the draw when you decide to pull it.
-
So what you're saying is that, from your camera experience, some of the times when guys think their pots have been raided, they're just pulling at an inopportune time?
-
Yep. Also.....the bait box that I used doesn't allow the crabs to really get into it much. That is good for the fact that it attracts them and the bait lasts longer. However, bait that is less accessible doesn't generate the frenzy or as long of interest that say a hanging flounder that is exposed and getting torn up.
What I need to do is get some new software so I can upload the entire clip in a sped up time lapse kind of deal. Then, you can see the whole soak.
-
Nice video.
First day of the season for us. Eight legal size (21 total) in the one pot we dropped this morning on our way to town (11 hour soak), but two were softish and released. No giants like opening day/week last year, all were between 6 1/4 and 6 1/2.
-
Fifteen crabs yesterday, gotta go check/pull in a while for today's haul.
Hard to keep them in one spot for a photo of yesterday's catch.
Here's what we got. The last pot put us to 13 so we had to find the three lightest ones.
.
-
Just 4 on Saturday....seemed to be pickin up after we pulled them for the day....
H20.....total count so far is 16.
-
34 for me so far in area 8-2. Have had a lot of irritating pulls this year to. I have now pulled up at least a half dozen pots that were completely empty, no crab and no bait left and the bait boxes opened. I have never experienced this before. Anybody else seeing this?
-
Now that sounds like folks messing with your pots. Looking forward to this weekend...gonna soak pots and whack humpies.
-
Got 7 on Friday and ten yesterday for a total of forty so far this season. Leaving the pots soak for the day, we'll see if we can get another ten this evening.
-
Felling good about pots this weekend....gonna soak from Sat to Sunday...got good flounder and leftover chicken for bait, humpy heads should be coming into the boat for fresh additions to the pots for the overnight soak.
-
Ten more today for a total of fifty on the season. My parents love crab so my dad was more than happy to go out with us to pull our two pots.
-
Nice haul there Loki! We crabbed off Lummi island a week ago and cooked up 122 in the 4 days we had the pots in. We did have 10 pots fishing and 40 of us up on the island for the feast though. If you count the crab on my card, 15.

Wow! 122 is way too many to clean.
Weathergirl and the kids were up on Lummi last Tuesday visiting her sister in law. She brought a bunch of crab to share with her mom and the gang.
-
Had a good day Friday with 4 limits and 7 more on Saturday morning. Total for the year now 61. Aiming for 100 this year.
-
Three more this morning in hood canal it has been a very slow year, total for the two weekends I have made it out this year is 24.
-
We got 5 keepers (dungeness) just outside the launch at Chinook headed out to bouy 10. Dinner tonight. Great flavor but a little soft.
-
Picked up 4 dungies on Sat and another 6 yesterday. Fresh humpie carcasses worked great.....
-
Picked up five yesterday with three over 7", my neighbor , who's bait freezer I am using for my humpie carcasses, used all but three of them. :bash: The price to pay for freezer space guess. With the two last Monday that puts the total to 57, but I have to go pull my pots out in a bit today.
