Title: Cat kill
Post by: hntrspud on July 08, 2013, 11:46:57 AM: I was in an area that I elk hunt over the weekend and noticed a cat kill of a deer. My question is, does the smell and sight of a dead animal in an area keep the elk out of that area for a while? This cat has been around a while and it never bothered them much, but I didnt notice any new sign in this area. Did the kill affect the elk, or did a nearby clearcut affect them more? The clearcut is within 6mos to a year old. I wanna put out some apples and stuff, but dont want to waste time or effort if it wont be worth it. :dunno:

I have seen Elk in a clearcut a day after the yarder and skyline were pulled out! The Elk know that the cat is in the area. Deer kill or not. Both are eating like crazy right now. They'll wander. They'll be back.

Post by: woodman on July 08, 2013, 12:50:03 PM: Just curious, are you sure it was a cat? I found a young deer kill yesterday and figured it was a bear. I have seen and killed bear where this one was. The kill I found was from earlier in the morning I believe.

I am sure it was a cat. I know of a specific cat in the area. I will put my cam in the area within the next week, and see what happens. All this info is great!

Last year Archery season Scouted up a herd and hunted the herd for 5 straight days. Herd almost never moved. Harvested a Cow and was going for a herd bull (dad had a tag). Point is, first day, during a calling session, Dad had a cougar stock the sound too with 5 yards of him untill he sensed something and turned and locked eyes with her. They both freaked out equally. Next day, less then 1/4 mile away from that spot, bino'd the cat and its cub on a rocky point. Killed an elk the next day.

My Story = don't worry about the cat, put out the cameras
