Prizes:
Current donations from Phelps Game Calls, Elk101.com/Extreme Elk and Elknut Productions.
WORKFLOW:
I went ahead and did this two different ways:
1)I made a video and then transferred it to YouTube. You can than use many online converters to convert the Youtube video to an .mp3 (google search). What you can do is enter in the letters pwn right after the www. when watching the video and hit enter. This will take you to a screen where all the available converters that YouTube supports are. I used OnlineConverter. Video must be "public" for the conversion. Otherwise you can go to google and search for "youtube to mp3 converter" and use one of your choice.
2)I also used a program called Free Video Converter. Here, you can convert any video to an .mp3 directly (It must be downloaded to your computer though).
I also advise that everyone uses a 256 kbps transfer to make sure that they are getting the highest audio quality. Then just email me the .mp3 file with your name and user name attached.

Is everyone practicing?

Anyone :chuckle: :dunno:

Ahhhhh!!! Maybe...... Which way does the mouth reed go in?? hehehehehe.... ;) :chuckle:

I have been standing the diaphragm on end with the latex pointing up to the roof of my mouth :chuckle:
Saweet I'll have to try that way and see if it makes any sound!!! :chuckle:
-
Does anyone plan on participating this year?
-
Yep I just haven't sent in my sound clip yet. Also I don't know if people are seeing it where its located on the page. :dunno:
-
Yeah,
Maybe we should let it float again
-
I'd love to participate but I think the Hoochi Mama isn't classified as a mouth call? If I bite it with may teeth would that qualifie? :chuckle:
-
:chuckle:
BUT it is air-operated
-
Is everyone holding out :chuckle:
-
I will be participating. Perhaps I'll even record it tonight.
-
Just now saw the official contest thread.... I will be making a submission at some point this week.

you snooze you lose! sounds like 1st, 2nd, & 3rd all get prizes. :chuckle:
-
Just a reminder to get yours submitted
-
What!? :chuckle: So people who didn't get theirs in get an extra week to practice and fine tune their recording compared to those of us who got ours in on time? I cry foul! :chuckle:
BTW, you did get mine a few days back right Jason?
Also, when do you anticipate the judging being done by?
-
judging I am guessing may take a week or so to give all the judges a chance to review them.
-
This thing didn't catch on this year. There is only another day to turn in your sequence.
Phelps Game Calls, Elk 101 and Elknut have donated prizes.
-
Just sent my clip in. Let me know if you didn't get the clip.
-
Jason - I sent in my clipabout a week ago, just double checking that you got it?
What is the count up to now out of curiosity?
-

-
Mines coming.
-
No more entry's are needed, I think I have this thing in the bag. :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
Is it over or can I submit tonight? Whats easiest way to record it and send it in?
-
So.... How many entries did you end up with?
-
7. 1/3 of last year
-
Thats too bad - Last year this was a fairly hot topic with decent participaion, it just boggles my mind when I look through all of the non hunting related threads that go an easy 10 pages... yet something like this that is directly hunting related and engaging.... and fun seems to have such little interest???? Oh well I guess......
-
Ya I waited till the last minute, ment to do it sooner but everyone gets busy with everyday life! Work/play/Work, it is surprising the small amount of entries tho?
-
I don't think this got promoted as well this year. I was going to add a link on the home page and send a newsletter to all the members, but our server was having trouble and the newsletter feature wouldn't work and then I forgot to post the link, sorry about that.
-
No worries. Easier to judge this way :chuckle:
-
Are you getting close to winner?
-
Any word yet Jason? :dunno:
-
Got them all uploaded and sent the judges the links today
-
Nice. 8)
-
I keep checking this thread hoping there is some change or results :chuckle: I have elk fever! Do you post the links to this thread so we all can
judge hear them as well? I think we all want to hear each others calling!
-
Totally missed this. Good luck guys.
-
:kneel: OR :cryriver: ??
-
The suspense is killing me Jason, when are the result done?
-
Can we hear the entries?
-

We have the scores in from 3 of 5 judges. I will try and post the calling later.
-
Sliverslinger and atfulldraw
OH neither of you to got the PM about the first second and third place winners?
-
Jason you posted that last post just before I was trying to be funny :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
9 days! Its killing me..........! :chuckle: Can we hear the entries? Hopefully we that entered can see the judges scores and maybe learn something, know which areas of our calling the judges believe needs improvement. It would be great to see where we scored good and where we didn't score so well, without feedback from accomplished elk hunters we might not improve if we are not sure of what we are doing wrong.(Its worked plenty for elk but I want it to fool any and all that hears it :chuckle:) It is judged from people I believe to know what they are talking about so.......hopefully we can see the scores learn something from this. :twocents: Thanks Jason for putting this on!

Scores or feedback would be good.
-
You'll get plenty of feedback, just wait. :chuckle: 14,500 members and only 7 contestants. Its a great contest. Thanks JP, Corey, Dirk, Paul, and Joel for your time. Thanks to Bearpaw for hosting all the great contests also. Wish there was more entries but there should be plenty of prizes to go around. Good luck guys.

What's everyone's opinion?
Waiting on one judge.
-
What's everyone's opinion?
Waiting on one judge.
I'm curious what people think as well.
-
I think 1 and 6 were pretty good. I think between the two, #1 would be my vote.
-
I tried to judge them as I listened to each, giving a score from one to ten in the 3 catagories. Cow/calf talk- BULL sounds- and freestyle. on realistic sounds, (to my ear anyways). Not trying to offend anyone at all, just wrote down a number as I heard the clips. Im not a professional judge. This is what I came up with.
#1- 7,6,7=20 revised 8,6,8=22
#2- 6,5,5=16
#3- 8,5,6=19
#4- 4,5,5=14
#5- 4,4,4=12
#6- 7,6,6=19
#7- 8,7,8=23
-
I think id have to go with #1. :twocents:
-
3 had most realistic sounds. a little out of sinc, but way better than the rest

:yeah: Let's here some more comments and critiques before the final judgements roll in!!
-
No one? Ok, on with it then.
-
In my first judging I gave callers 3 & 6 a tie at 19. I like both caller 3 and 6s cow calling although caller 6 has a couple different sounds at 14 seconds in and 18 seconds, between caller 3 and 6 I give it to caller 6. The bugles from both were ok (I liked callers 6 abit more) but not like the bulls I have had bugle at me.
-
I score it at----First place #7, Second place #1, Third place #6, Fourth #3
-
#7's bugles were just a little too "flutey" for me for them to win it. Not to take away anything from the caller but it just didn't have that rasp that the bulls I hear have. But that's just my :twocents:

:yeah: That is my thoughts as well
-
All elk sound different, no one is going to sound the exact same as the other one. There were a few entries that just sounded abit to much one toned. But this is just my opinion and in this case it doesn't matter. :chuckle: Good luck to all that entered and happy hunting this year. May your tags all get notched! Hunt hard and try to keep the wind in your favor.
-
#6 or #1, I say #1 wins
-

I still use the same bugle tube that i bought about 15 years ago. It has a "flutey" sound to it. The newer tubes have so much more resonance.
Edit* I am not caller #7 but can relate to the flutey sound. It sounded like he used a external for cow calls and maybe a terminator. I would be happy to have him call for me anyday. Nice work #7
-
This is a really interesting contest. You can almost hear if a caller was in a small room, warehouse, outside, or if they recorded with their phone or better audio equipment. The diaphram vs. Externals are apparent also. I think it was #6 sounded like he was in the trees. Very realistic  I really wanted to experiment with the freestyle portion but chose not to this year.

I agree that all elk are going to sound different and I was just giving some feedback on why I thought caller 7 wouldn't win the contest is all. I also agree with elk247 that it definitely sounded like a terminator type bugle. I won't deny that a lot of bulls fall victim to this type of call every year. Just to me they don't sound "elky" enough to win an elk calling contest. But again..just my opinion

Barrys Thunder Bugle
And for around 5-6 hours this guy thought it sounded "elky" enough.
-
That's a great looking bull!! Congrats...
I am guessing that you are #7 Tommy? I definately was not trying offend you in any way or knock the effectiveness of your calling in the elk woods. I have had a few bulls fall victim to what I would refer to as a "flutey" sounding bugle, and it was very effective!!
-
 Its all good!
-
Like I said..I never said those calls don't work..lots of elk die to those type of calls every year. You asked for opinions and what people thought so that's what I gave you. It's not like I was attacking you. I had a feeling from the get-go that you were caller 7 and if it works for you, stick with it. There's more than one way to skin a cat..and to call elk..congrats on the bull and keep it up.

5-6 hours! i bet #1 or #6 could have called it in in less that an hour. :stirthepot: haha. just kidding man. had to do it. i dream of a bull like that some day.

Berry thunder bugle, 10min worth of calling
-
:chuckle: He had cows and stayed just out of sight and bow range, It was a crazy bugle fest back and forth, I would match the sound of his bugle pretty well with that call. I just kept the wind in my face and kept calling until one of his cows finally came to check me out, he tried to cut her off hooking her with his rack and send her back up the hill, that's when I sent my arrow. Amazing hunt! Lots of bugleing back and forth. One of many crazy bugle fests that we have had using that call. I used to have another bugle that you all would laugh at if you heard it, but you all would $#!t if you knew how many bulls had been called in with that weird sounding bugle. More with that old challenge bugle than I could count!!!!
-
:yeah: this deserves a hell yeah that! Great hunt man!
-
Half of the views on this thread came from me checking to see if any results were posted, Its all good I know everyone gets busy.

Waiting on one more judge :sry: The judges being so rooted in the elk hunting industry become very busy this time of the year.

2 16.4 14 16 19 15 18 Squeeky cow calls. Bugle is decent, need to work on chuckles.
7 14 13 10 16 16 15 Need more versatility in cow sounds. Add some voice to the bugles (beginning and end). Get some diaphragms and practice to add more versatility.
5 13.6 15 10 15 14 14 Use your mouth to lip the sound "E-O" for cow sounds. Add growl at beginning of bugles. Bugles are "weak", chuckles are good.
I will figure out the prizes and post them. Caller #6 was not eligible for any prize from Phelps Game Calls. After talking with him he told me to divvy it up amongst the other callers.
-
Ok... I will be the first to fess up - I am #3
Thanks for putting this on again Jason - hope it happens again next year with a better turnout. If possible I would like more feedback and suggestions from the judges on what I can work on.

We all need to give out a special thanks to Jason, Corey, Joel, Paul, and Dirk for taking the time out of a busy schedule, to judge and provide the prizes for the contestants!! Everyone have a great season and post the pic's of the Grips and Grin's!!!!!
-
My Comments:
1: Cow calls good but squeeky on the high end. Good lip bawls and chuckles
2: External Cow Call sounds decent, chuckles quick, grunts not deep enough
3: Good clean cow sounds(maybe too clean), good high note bugles and voice inflection in bugles
4: High bugles, cow call is one higher tone (work on two part cow sounds)
5: Cow call sounds hollow, grunts are decent, more voice inflection in bugles
7: Cow calls decent but all the same, bugle is stair-stepping flutey, chuckles are missing the inhale portion
-
Thanks guys. Pretty cool to get some prizes on a friendly contest.

Ouch elk247! I'm OK running out of fuel in elk country, but the last place I want to be trapped is in Vegas! :bdid:
Thanks to everyone who participated, and congrats to the winners!
-
With the contest ending so close to hunting season I slacked on getting the prizes out. Some have used the discount from me but if your prize included a Tshirt from the elk101 crew please provide me and Corey the size so we can get them shipped.
-
Thanks again Jason.... I will go with a large for the t-shirt
-
I'm as excited for this as I am for next September!!!!!
