Governor announces two appointments
to Fish and Wildlife Commission

OLYMPIA - Gov. Jay Inslee has reappointed the chair of the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission to a six-year term and has appointed the executive director of the Purse Seine Vessel Owners Association to a vacant position.

The commission is a nine-member citizen panel that sets policy for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW). Members are appointed by the governor to six-year terms and are subject to state Senate confirmation. Three members must reside in Eastern Washington, three in Western Washington, and three may live anywhere in the state. No two members may live in the same county.

The governor reappointed the commission chair, Miranda Wecker of Naselle, to the Western Washington position she has held since 2005, for a term that runs through Dec. 31, 2018.  Wecker, who has served as chair since 2008, is the director of the Marine Program at the University of Washington Olympic Natural Resources Center.

Inslee also appointed Robert Kehoe of Seattle to a vacant at-large position for a term that runs through Dec. 31, 2014.  Kehoe, an attorney, joined the Purse Seine Vessel Owners Association as general counsel in 1997 and became executive director in 2009.  He has served as a commercial fishing industry representative on the Pacific Salmon Commission since 2001.

"Miranda Wecker has done an excellent job in leading the commission's work on several challenging fish and wildlife policy issues, and I am very pleased that she is willing to serve another term," Inslee said.  "Bob Kehoe is a well-respected leader in the commercial fishing industry and will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the commission's deliberations."

The commission's next meeting is scheduled Aug. 2-3 in Olympia. For more information on the commission, visit http://wdfw.wa.gov/commission/ (http://wdfw.wa.gov/commission/) .

Well when you look at the stats you can see why. Obviously more fishers in WA then hunters. 42% of WDFW General Fund money goes to the fish program, 1% goes to the wildlife program. 21% of the Wildlife fund money goes to the fish program, 27% of the wildlife fund goes to the wildlife program. Where is the money? Where are most of the management "issues"? Fish

Anyone have a list of Senators’ email addresses?  I’d like to send them my thoughts on the matter.

My 2 cents to the Senate:

Esteemed Senators:

I’m writing you today to encourage you to oppose Governor Inslee’s ill-advised appointment of Robert Kehoe to the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission.  Mr. Kekoe’s position as executive director of the Purse Seine Vessel Owners Association would create a clear and present conflict of interest with the mandate of the Commission.  As outlined in RCW 77.04.012, the Mandate of the WDFW Commission states:

“The commission shall attempt to maximize the public recreational game fishing and hunting opportunities of all citizens, including juvenile, disabled, and senior citizens.”

A commission member directly employed by a commercial fishing enterprise can hardly be expected to look out for the interests of the average recreational fishing population.   Those of us that buy the licenses, permits, endorsements, applications, and passes that provide most of the funding for the WDFW are certainly not well represented by this appointment.

Please stand up for your constituents by rejecting the appointment of Robert Kehoe to the WDFW Commission.

Who we are

P.S.V.O.A. is a non-profit Washington organization established in 1936 to further the interests of the commercial fishing fleet. Today PSVOA is the largest trade group in the State of Washington representing over 400 vessel owners operating in various fisheries throughout the West Coast of Alaska. A 13 member Board of Directors, nine (9) elected by membership from various Puget Sound fishing ports and four (4) at-large positions elected by the entire membership guides PSVOA.

The whole thing should be changed from F&W, to The Dept of salmon.  That is where their big money comes from.
