Title: 11x12 FREAK BUCK
Post by: WAPITIHUNTER on October 17, 2008, 11:24:32 PM
Hey everybody! I just got a call from my cousin who was hunting over near Banks lake. Evidently he shot a buck without testicles. It has a small rack......1x2 or something of the sort and it still had all the velvet. He said it has something like 4.5 inch bases with 11 points on one side and 12 on the other. The real kicker is that he said it is a giant body wise. 300+ lbs.

I will try and get some pictures up as soon as I can.

As Eastmans Journal would refer to as a cactus buck. A buddy of mine and I saw one that was killed at Swanson Lakes several years ago that was a forked horn with a 30" back beam and still in velvet. I have a pic of it on Kodak paper but don't have a digital pic of it. It was impressive. Someone left it after they shot it thinking it was a legal buck till they got to it. They left it overnight and my friend found it the next day and the coyotes had stripped it down to a bare skeleton but its eyes weren't even shrivelled when he found it. He turned the head into the ranch manager and have seen it seen it in the papers since then as a accidentally killed buck with no retrieval.

I've got a w/t rack with 11 on one side and 12 on the other. I shot it when I was 14. I'll post pictures when I get the chance.

Here are the pictures of the freak buck. My cousin shot him at 200 yards at a full run. He said he has never seen a buck run that fast. His hunting buddy jumped him out of a rocky crevice real close to some winter wheat. Some other hunters had come and gone and he held tight. He didn't jump up until James was 20 yards from him.

Classic Cactus Buck.  Pretty rare condition.  They typically never shed velvet. Would love to see that buck in 5 years.

I have heard that it is caused by the missing testis. They either catch them on a fence or someone is castrating them as a fawn. It is all about the testis, or lack there of.

Watch the movie Muley Crazy 1. It's filmed by Ryan Hatch. He has some pretty good footage of a cactus buck and explains alot about them.

Here is a similar one I shot.  Notice all the stickers at the base.  I heard the story about being casterated on fence etc and I went back to check the gut pile the next day to see if testicles were intact.  The gut pile was already totally gone.  Scavengers were quick!!

Well the buck was not as big body wise as he thought. I took my "Big Buck Scale" down and we weighed him.

140 lbs hanging weight. So according to the estimated live weight on the scale 240 lbs live weight. Lots of very tasty meat regardless.
