I just got off the phone with Bearmanric and we decided it was time to start a thread for our upcoming hunt. For those that may not know, Rick Auctioned off a 5 day bear calling hunt. The auction was won by Yorktransport for $2000.00. York can't make the hunt so Paw66, Docsven and myself split the cost 3 ways. It's an honor for me to do this hunt knowing that it brought in money for Aarons family. The hunt is now 3 weeks away and we are all getting excited. This will be a good way for all of us to keep each other up to date on our preparation and planning along with allowing all of you to share in the fun. I know I have been gathering gear, shooting my rifle, sharpening knives and all the other stuff that goes into hunt preparation. Soon we will be posting up pics of camp and animals hopefully. I'm excited, can't wait!
-
Tagging this one....looking forward to lots of pics of camp, hunters doing their thing....and some bruins in the dirt. Good luck to the whole group.
-
Get it done!!!!!

On my elk hunt last year I lost my custom knife. Well treated my self to a new one. The handle is Zericote the blade is 154. The other is my first benchmade sweet knife. It has a S30V. Rick

Good Luck y'all...so are you hunting for one bear or three?
-
Your going to have a good time, Rick knows what he is doing!
-
Those are some nice knives Rick, I'm jealous. We are going for as many bears as we can get, up to 4 that is.
-

4 guys = 8 bears.
Good luck and have fun.
-
Ok btkr, you set the bar high, we will see what we can do.
-
Tagging this one....looking forward to lots of pics of camp, hunters doing their thing....and some bruins in the dirt. Good luck to the whole group.
Yabba dabba doo! Tagging for same reason. Great hunt for a great cause. Like my dad used to say; Aim damnit aim!!!! :chuckle:
-
Nice set of blades Rick..........that top one looks like a sweet skinner to me! I'm hoping Ripper shoots the smallest bear of the bunch....that way I can rib him about it (because I'm 100% jealous).
-
This will be a great time for you guys regardless of how many bear are taken, with a little luck you'll get a chance to try out that great looking set of new knives!
Good Luck
-
How big was this years H20? I will shoot nothing smaller! :chuckle: I will be happy with any bear. Actually, I'm just happy to go and hang out, meet some new people, and learn how to call properly. My heart is pounding away just thinking about it.
-
Skull right at 18 inches....no official measurement....I think it was about 225 on the paw....nice boar that as you know I'm very pleased with.
For you...I expect nothing smaller than 18 1/2 skull, 300 on the paw....and pefectly cinnimon with a perfect white chest patch. Oh....also it must have one torn ear from fighting and....
-
I'm sure Rick will put on bear, just be ready to do your part.
-
Oh trust me, I'm ready to do my part. I just bought me a new gun, put a scope on it and had the guy at Walmart bore site it for me. I'm ready to go kill me a bear!
:yike: Sarcasm of course. :chuckle:
-
I have no doubt buddy!
I'm going to be on pins and needles knowing you guys are out there putting the hurt on them. I'd be happy to donate some pep sticks and some snacks from my spring bear. Maybe it will bring a little luck?
-
This thread needs pictures already. Rick do you have any from past hunts?
-
I was very excited to see this hunt go for what it did. I am very curious to see the outcome and am frankly very jealous!
Best of luck! Its gonna be awesome...and a great thread read too~!
-
I shot this bear 3 years ago. It was in a terrible hell hole, took us 10 hours to pack it out.
-
I remember that pic......that was a good sized one.
-
Sweet bear Ripper. cant wait to hang out with every one. I will be carrying only my 44 Blackawk.. New custom Grips on there way in a trade. I will show them when they arrive. Rick
New camera I treated my self to yesterday. It's badazz for calling.

I have to work today until 2:00 then I'm taking the family out to do some shooting. I need to practice my offhand shooting more. I don't care how much you shoot, you can never practice enough. We'll be shooting my sons Savage 11 in 7mm-08, my TC Pro Hunter in 7mm Rem mag, 338 win mag and my 12g slug barrel. We will probably put a few rounds through the 357 also. I will post up some pic's later on this eve or tomorrow morning. This hunt can't get here soon enough.
Here are some pics of past shooting sessions.
-
Can someone tell me how to tag a thread?
-
You just did... :chuckle: ...and so did I :hello:
-
Crazy ...but very sweet ....
-
You're it!
Great stories so far!
-
Well I wasn't able to get out and shoot the other day so I plan on going out tonight. Things have been a little crazy around the Ripper household lately, but that will have to be told in a different thread.
-
good luck on the hunt. reading this stuff gets me more excited for the 1st
-
Sitting here at Seatac picking up wife been in Vermont. Going to head to the Coast to scout for 4 days. I'll will take lots of picture's . Call sales are way Down so going to walk away from callmaking for a while.Rick
-
Sorry about the bear call sales, that sux! I can't wait to hear about the scouting trip. I was going to drive down next weekend to check out the area, are you still planning on setting up camp then?
-
Calls sales will pickup next month. Will be going back early to. Rick
-
I apologize for being tardy on submitting an entry on this thread, have been camping and scouting for elk on the east side. When this auction item appeared, I watched it for quite awhile before getting hold of Yorketransport and partnering with him for the winning bid. Am looking forward to the hunt and meeting Docsven, Ripper, and seeing Ric again.

-
Post more pics when you get a chance. Glad to hear there is more logging.
-
Great pics Rick, I'm super excited.
-
Cant wait heading back up tomorrow. Thought I would share. Making the guys a killer bear call. This is the beginning. 3 inch African blackwood best for sound. I will take pictures as the calls are born. Going to try to get a couple cow calls done. Will be cow calling also like Billythekid works for him. Rick

Great looking calls, Ric
Beginning to get things organized for a Monday departure to camp and some scouting.
-
Wow those are beautiful Rick, I can't wait to hear how they sound!
-
Hey Rick, I'm pretty new on here but plan on spending more time when I can. Great looking calls. Do you ever work with figured maple? I've got a whole bunch of it if you want a few blocks. Good stuff, I've been carting it around for about 20 years now. Came off the peninsula (I grew up by Port Angeles). It's from an outfit that got the timber from the Forks area and then milled it, kiln dried it and sold it for violin and guitar blanks to fender, Stradivarius (sp?), all the big names. I used to carve fish out of it and sell them at galleries around the NW but haven't done it for years. Anyway, PM me if you might be interested, I don't know how it is for sound but I'm familiar with some of the exotics you use and know how rock hard this maple is. Good luck with bear, your checking out some of my old stomping grounds.
-
Tagging this one too. It's going to be a real adventure.
:IBCOOL:
-
Yep. Cow calling has worked great for me on bears.
-
Man! How do I miss these threads! TAG!
-
I'm happy for all interest in this thread, I just hope we can put some bears on the ground and some pics on here. I feel pretty confident, but you never know. That's why they call it hunting. The good news for me is that everyone agreed to let my 14 yo son come along with us. He will be an observer, not a shooter. I'm always happy when he accompanies me on hunts. He's been through hunter safety, but he's not quite ready to pull the trigger yet. When he is ready the animals better watch out, he is a great shot! He is a natural. 7 days to go, I can't wait!

My wife just booked a room for her and my son Nathan at the Lake Quinault Resort for Friday and Saturday night, August 2 and 3. Looks like a nice place. I may have to slip down there for a shower or something. Check it out.

Nice camp Rick, I will be there Wed afternoon. Here is what we did today.
-
Is that a lean-to meat pole already set-up in camp?
-
Yes it is. It's one of the elk camps up here. Rick
-
Rick, is that our only tent? I can bring one if needed.
-
putting my little tent up for me. lots of rocks. got go this is when I see bears.
150 pounder. nice fur and brown muzzle.

I am excited for you guys. Stack them up like cord wood!
-
I'm glad to see this hunt happen. I wish I could have gone but I just can't be away from work for any length of time..
Good luck, be safe, have fun, and take lots of pictures.
Andrew
-
Thanks again Andrew for keeping me in mind.
-
Getting excited for this weekend! Lots to do before then. I was at Bownanza this weekend or I would have gone up to locate Ric's camp. Headed out Thursday night after work, and plan on being in the hunt Friday through Sunday. This will be fun no matter the outcome! I'm going to tent it.
-
Cool, it'll be nice to meet you. Are you bringing a tent or sleeping in the one that Rick has up? That's why I was asking if we need another, I seem to remember you saying you would tent it.
-
Sorry I'll get back to camp and set up my little tent . There will be three cots in the tent. I had to camp in that spot because we have a 24 trailer coming today. The ground is Rocky. Dangit want to take a shower today. Rick
-
Sounds like you guys are going to have a great time.
-
Can't wait to hear the stories
-
Cool, it'll be nice to meet you. Are you bringing a tent or sleeping in the one that Rick has up? That's why I was asking if we need another, I seem to remember you saying you would tent it.
No, I am bringing a small tent and a cot.
-
Finished packing, trailer is hooked up and am on my way to camp, be there in four hours. Looking forward to a great hunt. :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL:
-
This is going to be the longest 3 days of work in my life! I want to go now!
-
See you soon. Getting fire wood for Rippers son. I might even have a call of two for him to. Rick
-
Tagging this one for sure.
I have that exact same lathe and I've been thinking about making my own calls. Care to share any advice sometime?
-
I have a rifle like yours and am thinking about getting into guiding, care to share any of your honey holes? :chuckle:
-
LOL wood working is a little different from hunting. People usually don't mind hooking newbies up with some knowledge :)
-
I trained Jason Phelps. When I'm not busy. Ok i will download a picture 4 killer bulls from two nights ago. seen them in Seattle.Rick
-
Sorry, couldn't help it. Let's keep this thread on the awesome bear hunt at hand.

Nice!!
-
Nice pic. Hope you guys have an awesome hunt.
-
Now I wish it was elk season!
-
4 bulls one 6 point and three 5 points. Rick
-
Ok Rick, now find me one of them 400lb bears that I hear they take on the Quinault Rez every year. I hear that those bears taste real good being raised on twinkies and donuts. :chuckle:
-
Man I hate (love) these long winded threads that only build up a silly (awesome) hunt. I'm not (yes I am) checking this thread until the season opens. Ripper you should leave work early, get the boy, and get on the road. Granted....they aren't going to open the season early for you but I'm getting a little stir crazy. Thank goodness I'm not going...I'd be a wreck waiting.
-
Those elk are about 800 yards from the Rez. I was going through a big bear spot. Got my shower back to camp. Rick
-
Just seen the big boy. Hoh mainline. Bummer he was on the quinsy Rez. Shiny black pelt brown muzzle. Rick
-
Thank God you got a shower! :chuckle: Is there a shower facility close? 5 guys on a 5 day hunt could get pretty stinky after a couple of days!
I hear ya H20, I am going crazy here. I'm not worth a crap here at work anyway! For some reason I just can't get into work.
-
I say we go get him anyway! :yike: :chuckle:
-
Yes there are showers at the Queets Indian store. Not very far. Rick
-
Hey Rick, do you think we could call that bear off the Res to our side of the road? I'll drop him right on the shoulder so we don't have to pack him more than about 8 feet. :chuckle:
-
Thats a good plan right there.
-
Come on Rick, Tell me about the giant you saw tonight!
-
I was able to load up most of my stuff last night. Today after work I just need to pick up a few things from the store, pack up some clothes for the boy and I and we will be set. Tomorrow I'll work for a few hours to let traffic die down, then go home to pick up Nathan and my guns. We should be on our way to camp by 10:00 am and hopefully there by 3:00pm. I'm totally stoked!
-
Ripper....what are the odds your boy is going to get a little trigger time?
-
He say's he isn't ready to shoot an animal yet. He was with me when I shot my last bear and was fine with it. Just not ready to pull the trigger. That was pretty funny, he was 11 at the time, sitting next to me at day light glassing this clearcut. I said there's a bear buddy and he jumped up and started running back towards the truck! The bear was about 400 yards away at the time so I was able to get him and bring him back. He said he wasn't scared, he just thought the rifle would be loud. I put in his ear plugs and he was ok after that. I still laugh about that every time I think about it. About a half an hour later we shot our bear.
-

I like the step by step updates.
Make sure you let us know what’s for dinner, how many hours you sleep (if any), what time you head out, … :chuckle: :chuckle:
Just having a little fun… I really do like the updates! Keep 'em coming and wishing you the best of luck.

That's too funny! I'm dissapointed you didn't turn around and take a picture of it. :chuckle:

Talked to Rick this morning, he and Pat went scouting yesterday and didn't see any bears, he said there aren't a lot of people over there yet. He mentioned finding about three elk kills, on with the head missing, and is keeping an eye around for sign near the kills. He also said that he is seeing a lot of sign in other places. They will be going out in the morning early and glassing, listening to the brush, and will start calling. I will be hitting camp about 8 tomorrow night. I had asked him about any cold storage near there for when we tag out, he is looking into it, but has to leave camp and find a spot where he can get phone reception. Hopefully we will need a locker soon!
-
If we can get some say I'd like to vote for a small....little guy.....being popped opening day. I think you all should skin it and cook it whole over a fire all day....low and slow...then just go heathen and eat that sucker down to the bone.
No need for a locker early on....problem solved!
-
I think Hawaiian style pit would be better, I'll see if anyone brought banana leaves.
-
Rick's bears have been training for the hunt tomorrow, just like these bears from the North Country.
What goes on when you are not there! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AihvuZiDhsg#)
Good luck, all.
-
Well? Where are the bears? Woke up this morning with the faint sound of gunshots in my ears........
-
Reception is scarce out here. No bears yet.
-
The bears should be coming out of the woodwork now, time to fill that meat pole.
-
Well.....they must be so busy skinning and hauling it isn't even funny!
-
Ripper go
-
Ripper go?
-
This feels like an episode of Lost now.
-
I knocked this guy down yesterday at around 4:30. Nice head, about 215-225. Caught him digging in a wood pile, then he took off up a hill. Dropped him at 175 yards.
-
Nice Bear. :hunter:

-

Best of luck to you all!
-
Sweet glad to see fur in the dirt :IBCOOL:
-
Yeah buddy!
-
I got the bear all broke down and packed in ice today. Also had time to have lunch will my wife and son. I havent run into any of the others today. Cell reception is awful. Right now I'm sitting on this big clearcut waiting for #2 to show himself. Oh yeah, I spotted that bear yesterday, it was not called in. It was my second bear.
-
Congrats Ripper! That's a great looking bear. I'm really glad that this hunt worked out for you.
Andrew
-
Great bear Ripper! Glad to see some success and thanks for all the updates Rick!
-
Congrats
-
#2 wasn't to be. I had to come home today, just got here. I need some hot tub time, a shower and an early night. I will post more pics and do a good write up tomorrow. Docsven also left today so Paw66 has Rick all to himself until Tuesday eve. Good luck fella's, I'm rooting for you.
-
Just got home, it was a great three days! Rick went above and beyond and we saw a lot of pretty country. There was more pressure over the weekend, not a lot of people, but all in all, a great area for bears. Saw an elk herd and got some pics- I will post them later. It was great meeting Rick and Paw66 and Ripper and his son. Had some good talk around the camp fire too. Wouldn't have missed it!
-
Wish us luck on our way up into the High country. Was great hunting with you guys. Rick
-
Nice bear Ripper. Good luck to you all.

Good luck!

I just ate some back straps with the family, delish! I can't believe all the negative comments I've heard from others about bear meat. I've eaten plenty and every time I think about the people that said bear is stringy, or greasy. It taste great. Even my wife who wont eat deer thinks it's delicious. Oops, I meant to say it's aweful, you shouldn't waste your time hunting them. The meat is tough, greasy and stringy. Yuck.
-
We need a few more pics of this hunt.......
-
Been busy since I got back, I will post what I have shortly. I hope the other guy's have some pic's because I don't have many.
-
Maybe not many but you got ones with you and a bear!
-
OK OK OK here are a couple I just down loaded. One is the same pic, just cleaned up a bit.
-
Yesterday I took the hide to the Taxidermist. I wanted to learn how to skin out the head so I can do it in the future. In the process we noticed a lot of trauma up along the left side of the face. There about 2 inches below the eye way my Accubond bullet. I thought the bullet exited out of the back of the neck, but apparently not. We determined that it went in the left side between the 3rd and 4th rib from the back, up to the spine, blowing bone fragments out the back of the neck then veering left and coming to rest below the eye. I'm glad it didn't destroy the skull. I'll get a pic of the Accubond tonight.
-
Cool....clean it up and we can weigh it...
-
Looking forward to seeing the bullet, congrats again on your success!
-
Congrats Ripper!! Glad you found the bullet, I wanna see it too!
-
Okie dokie, I'm going to try to do this from my phone. I had my wife text me some bullet pics.
-
Sorry they are blurry but you get the picture! :chuckle: Accubonds spread out making a nasty wound channel, yet retain most of their weight.
-
That is some solid performance right there....can't complain a bit.
-
Yes indeed, I love the Accubonds! I'll take you up on weighing it, I don't keep a scale around anymore, since I changed professions. :chuckle:
-
Hit it with an old toothbrush and some peroxide...get all the gore out of it. Digital scale will tell us.
-
Got home this afternoon, without a bear but with good memories and new Hunt Washington friends. DOCSVEN and RIPPER, it was a pleasure to get to know and visit with both of you. Rick went a 110% to make this a great experience. Hunted high and low, clear cuts and timber, honey holes and deep holes with no avail. Tried calling sets and glassing, no takers. Rick took time and made some rookie callers of his three charges, with some success if I might say. :chuckle: Saw some elk, deer, and Spotted Owls. I feel very fortunate to have been able to go on this hunt. Thanks Rick
-
Rick did give it his all. He set up a very comfortable camp, gathered firewood, drove us around all over the place and called his tail off. You couldn't ask for any more out of him. If you ever get the chance to hunt with him, you will learn a lot. Thanks Rick
-
Here is the processing station. I just ground up 25# of breakfast sausage. Next up is 25#of sweet Italian/ hot Italian sausage. Ate some tenderloins today. Yum yum.
-
Looking good. Rick
-
Is that the factory winchester loaded accubonds?
-
Yes, factory rounds.
-
 they did well!
