Title: The new crabbing rig project
Post by: DoubleJ on July 14, 2013, 10:16:30 PM: Here's the new crabbing rig as it sits right now. A little patch work, a little primer, a little paint, and we'll be off to the races. There's a 10hp motor being worked on to fit on it and I'm probably going to look for a cheap trailer for it but for now, it fits (sort of) in the back of the truck.

He "Paid for it" with his birthday money (which grandpa will give back at a later time) so technically, he owns it, even though it was given to us. He's picked Battleship Gray for the hull with a white interior for the color

My oldest wanted one badly enough he was willing to put up his birthday money. I was going to buy one off of here and was talking to my dad and he said we could have his (this one). To foster the ownership and caring for what you own, we made my "son pay for it". :chuckle:

Post by: DoubleJ on July 14, 2013, 10:49:26 PM: Not sure. It hasn't seen the water in about 20 years. My dad's working on it. He replaced the carb a few years ago but thinks the float is sticking. He'll get it. He's one of those "Fix anything with a crescent wrench" kid of guys. Give him some duct tape, a crescent wrench, JB Weld and some zip ties and he'll build the Taj Mahal in a month

Probably a swimming hole raft now. Once I get that 10hp motor, I'll have to figure out where close to Shelton I can get Dungies. Seems kind of a waste to load up a boat and motor and gas tank to drive it 100yds off the end of the dock for Red Rocks.

Post by: DoubleJ on July 18, 2013, 01:28:49 PM: Still a ways to go. I have a little bit of primer left I'm going to spend on the inside in a few hours. Then let it dry hard for a couple of days. This weekend, it's going to get it's paint job. I also need to get some plywood and stain it and adhere it to the transom so the motor doesn't damage the paint. Oh, and I need that 10hp motor. I'm not brave enough to go out into dungie territory with only oars.

We always re-shot gelcoat over all of our repairs. My dad is really good at getting the pigment just right and blending it all together....

Not sure yet. Probably not very well. I am letting each coat dry for a number of days in the hot sun to get it cured as hard as I can. I don't have access to gel coat applicators and can't afford to have someone do it so this is as best as I can get it. I have plenty of paint for touch ups at seasons end.

Post by: DoubleJ on July 28, 2013, 09:23:51 PM: No progress on the boat from the last update but we did mount the boat on the van today and it'll drive solid it looks like. I'll paint the inside tomorrow and in a few days, we'll mount the boat and strap it down and then I'll drive it around some and get it up to highway speed and see how it handles.
