Title: 100 yard .22LR groups.

Post by: jackelope on July 15, 2013, 03:56:03 PM: I did today for the 1st time. Modified 10/22, cheap ammo from a bench at the range. Shoots ragged bug holes at 50 yards, shoots about 5" groups at 100. There was a little breeze blowing. Not a breeze I was thinking about shooting my .300, but maybe enough to goof up a .22.

Post by: carpsniperg2 on July 15, 2013, 04:23:10 PM: Yeah it's pretty rare that I get 2" or better groups at 100 with bulk ammo. If I buy the cci mini mags they tend to group the best out of mine. Most of the time I just run the federals. I love my 22 mag so much, I don't run a rim fire to often. If I am after diggers then I will run them but for quill pigs and close range yotes I love the 22 mag.

Post by: jaymark6655 on July 15, 2013, 06:08:26 PM: Depends on the gun and the ammo. Oylmpians can shoot a 3/8" target and 55 yards with iron sights. That would be under an inch at 100. I don't have .22LR, just .17HMR (scoped) and I try to keep them all inside a dime. With my 5.56, red dot/no magnification I always aim for an 1" group size. I am guessing wind and correcting for it would cause most of the groups to be larger than what the rifle/ammo would be capable of for the 22LR.

His rifles are like 4-7 thousand, he holds a number of records, I hesitate to put his name on site.
BUT
He regularly hits a .125 X inside a .25 inch circle, in good wind I would bet on .5 inch groups at 100.

Post by: DBHAWTHORNE on July 15, 2013, 06:21:01 PM: I have seen a few CZ-452's shoot 1 inch and under out of the box and scoped but they are hard to repeat..generally 2-3 inches is a real good group with .22's that most of us would shoot. I'm not sure what the competition guns can do.

I have a Ruger marksman 10/22. Watching to see what others say. I'm at 1.5" at 50 yards but have not shot 100 with it. Just didn't think about it.

Post by: jackelope on July 15, 2013, 07:32:11 PM: The rifle has a DIY trigger polish/clean up deal. I saw a video on YouTube so I followed along with it. Can't say it made much of a difference. It's got a Hogue overmolded stock, a Tactical Solutions fluted .920 barrel, a Nikon Buckmasters 3-9x40 scope. Nothing too crazy. This was also the 1st shots out of this barrel. Ive had it put together for a while but never shot it till today. Here's the rifle.

The average yards for me is 40 to 50. Nothing special bulk ammo standard 10/22 scoped. Group size on a guess would be around 1 to 1 1/2 inches. Camping this weekend might have to pay more attention.

Anschutz makes a great .22.... CZ does too.

You'll get varying answers. 100yd MOA with other than target ammo is not the norm for a 22LR shooting out of doors. Indoors is different. You'd be surprised. That said, most target 22 is standard velocity and will have a drop of +3.5 inches if sighted at 0 for 50yds... Wind drift is your enemy.

My CZ 452 Varmint with a trigger that's....light....and its' favorite flavor Wolf Target Match ammo was right at an inch.
Best I could do.

That's an extra good Benelli. (assume you're talking about an MP95 or MP90) I have shot several of them that will hold .5moa at 50yds, and several Hammerli's that will do the same. Pardini's not as good. But dime sized groups at 100yds from any standard velocity 22 rimfire is exceptional. -Again, Wind drift is your enemy.

John, if you've got a Benelli, then why are you not competitive in winter Bullseye league at Custer? Contact me after hunting seasons if you're in the area and want to strut your stuff.

There's a lot to be said for a 'fowling shot' before actuall shooting for group/score, but 'never' cleaning isn't 'normally' the answer. A GOOD barrel, will shoot better when it is clean.

When you shoot competition you religiously clean your .22 after every match. They always give you a sighting target before you shoot for score, which is always timed. This is when you take your fouling shots. If you never clean your gun, as dirty as .22 ammo can be it will effect your accuracy in many cases. To much build up is not a good thing.

And when I changed barrels it like Lapua. In my prime with iron sites when I could see really well it was capable of dime sized groups at 100 yards. I shot usually 2-3, 100 yard matches every year, but most of the time it was 50 meters and I usually could keep a 5 shot group around 0.24 - 0.27 at 50 meters.

When I shot a prone match last year after taking about 8 years off I shot about a .50 cent group in prone with some CCI standard velocity ammo. I was bouncing all over the place. On a bench it still will shoot a dime at 100 yards given little to no wind or bad mirages.

I'm lucky to get 3 inch groups with mine. I haven't tried anything but the cheapest ammo I could find though.

I found a pretty big difference in the group sizes the different ammo provided. here are the results (I bought a bunch of the CCI blazer ammo after this test. nice when your gun likes the cheap stuff!):

I had it a couple years with full intention of doing bullseye again, but aparently the place is always packed, so I just never went, then sold the benelli. I still have a good .22 for bullseye, but just not to that high of a quality level.

I wouldn't trade my 452 for anything. i like to bring it along when i shoot clay pigeons with my shotguns, i'll line up the spent hulls and pick them off with the .22 at 50 yards :tup:
