So I got my Idaho regular deer tag in the mail this week. I have been waiting to join my family on this trip since I first started hunting. I leave oct 5th and will be there for three weeks. I have never been able to afford this tag and feel extremely blessed to have the time and money to go this year. I'd shoot a smaller buck the first week if i get a chance and go buy a second tag just to ensure meat. Heck I'd shoot two smaller bucks if I get the chance but I'm hoping I find a decent four point at least. I will get good photos if nothing else and get to hunt some amazing country.

Yes regular deer tag. It's a unit my family has hunted for 15 years now and they do well. My grand father killed a 200" five point last year and I don't want to ruin his honey hole by posting it online. He shot a 170 class buck about four years ago and his new 2012 buck dwarfs it.

I have a pic of both bucks. I have to wait till I get home to post them. The pics aren't to great. I took them w the iPhone and got a bad angle so the points hide the others but he's HUGE! Mass width and two identical cheaters on his backs.

So I choose not to post pics of my family's deer cause it's not mine to post. I leave in a week for Idaho and am stoked to get over there as I have never been. I have been hunting hard here with the bow and missed a nice 4 point bull during elk season at 60 meters. Shot over his back. My buddy was shooting earlier in the day and I had changed my range finder to yards for him. I ranged him at 65 yards and thought meters... And wiff. But we got a good hunt in walked about 60 miles in six days and had a blast. We were in elk every day just couldn't make it happen. The rifle in Idaho should provide some meat. Staying for two weeks of the season and I can't wait! I got sick a few days ago and just hope I can kick it before Friday. Maybe I get service
And can keep you all posted as we start knocking deer down. Good luck to all this rifle season.

Yea he is! I don't think he had him scored any guesses? The pic is a bad representation of this deer he has mass way up by the cheaters. Having seen him first hand I'd say close to if not 200". What do you guys think? Bone what's your guess?

His fronts are great for score, his backs aren't. Doesn't matter. Great deer!

His left backs are deeper. And on his left backs where they fork it must be 3 inches thick. The pic doesn't show it at all. A beauty for sure. They saw another within a mile of this on that was just as big. I am after meat but I'd love to shoot a monster. My grandfather is very proud of this deer and says its the biggest buck he has ever shot. He was 75 when he killed this deer.

Four more days and I'm gone!!! Getting gear together now and can't fn wait! Any tips on finding these critters? Never hunted in the more open country. I have a good pair of 10x50 nikons and figure they should help. I'll have a 30-06 and hand loads to boot. I'll also have my 30-30 for when I'm sick of packing the bigger gun around. I'll post lots of pics and hopefully have a big buck to show for my efforts.

If you're hunting open country I wouldn't use a 30-30 unless it has good optics and you're confident with it at farther ranges. Covering a whole lot of country and glassing is the best advice I can give

Use your boots to get to a high spot, and then park it and use your glasses to find the deer. If you're going to spook deer hiking, glass first. When you've glassed all you think you can, glass some more. Be out at very first light to watch for deer moving. If the deer are bedded, look for small parts of deer. Look for an ear, an antler tine, a nose. If you see the whole deer, he'll likely be running full speed. Look in shady spots, look in tall sagebrush, look under rock bluffs, etc. You get the picture.

I just got new boots so that should get me a few miles. I leave at 4 pm tomorrow and I can't wait. I'll keep ya all posted and post pics ASAP!

So I arrived the 6th of October with high hopes to find a good meat buck for my freezer. Got camp set up and went up top to look around for some deer to no aval the first day. The second day of scouting we found 12 deer all does. The next few days were simalar but we kept at it. The opener I hiked all day and glassed hard to not see a signal deer. The next I still hadn't seen any deer until 630 at night when we found seven does no bucks. I knew they were there so I kept at it. The morning of the third day i parked at a gate and walked down the draw. The ash was icy and very loud to walk in. I got to the opening and a heavy horned buck jumped at about 70 yards and was out of sight in seconds. I walked down the ridge to get a shot but he was gone I only found three does looking back from acrossed the draw. The next morning I went up into the steep stuff on the way to park I saw a doe then four more and the last in line was a small two point. I grabbed the gun put a round in it and drew down on him. All of the deer jumped as I loaded the gun. I kept on and parked and started up the steep stuff.

As I made my way up the brush was so thick I thought I was stuck a few times. I got to the right of the ridge and seen a deer in the bottom. Probably the samy two point from earlier. I got up aways and seen a doe across the canyon. I could hear a deer break brush on the far side of the draw so I worked my way further up to get in front of him. I crossed the draw at the top and went to look in the next finger. As I crested the ridge I turned the safety off and looked close a few steps later I see deer. I put the scope on his head and look for horns. I see none and assume its a doe. Then I see a base and the rough anter coming from his head. He's thirty yards quartered away lookin back over his shoulder at me. The cross hairs go down his spine and center on his chest and boom. Down he goes. I am more than excited as I walk up to find a 16 in wide deep forked two point laying dead at my feet. I spend the next two hours skinning, deboning him and bagging him. I was more than happy to get this deer and spend the last twelve days in camp with my family.

I'm am just guessing your a kid? That's a good way to poke your eye out. Best to review safe gun handling rules. Until you do, post up where you are hunting. I think we all probably want to be a ways away.
As I crested the ridge I turned the safety off and looked close a few steps later I see deer.

I'm 29 and very conscious of gun safety.

My safety was off for two steps before the gun went off. If I hadn't killed that buck right then the safety was going back on. I don't glass with the rifle. I put it on a deer at thirty yards to identify as a buck or not. If it were any further I would have turned the safety on and use my binoculars to identify buck or not.

Thanks guys. He was a huge bodied deer. I ground up at least 50lbs of burger and made summer sausage and breakfast sausage with cheese and jalapeņo out of some of it. Another guy in camp killed a 1x2 and my aunt killed a 3x4. So we went 3 for 6 in Idaho deer camp. We stayed for 13 days and I'll be going back next year to do it again. This buck was young and tender!
