I don't have any advise for MT... Is ist still $350 for an out of state tag? ID is only $35 for a tag and is likely to open up permission in places if you have it. If you are looking for target rich areas you could look up NWwolfsightings.org to give you an idea...

Just out of curiosity why MT? ID is cheaper and closer?

Montana changed it to $50 this year, so a total of $70 to hunt wolf vs $190 in ID

Buy both Montana and Idaho wolf tags. That's what I would do. I've been to Idaho 3 times last year hunting them right on the borders of each state. You wouldn't want to miss a shot if that's where you're going to hunt. The MT tags go on sale August 5th.

Idaho tags are right near $184. I forget the exact price I paid. Montana is $70 total. I called MT today to verify the cost. You can shoot up to 5 wolves in MT at $70 each time you need a new tag.

It's only because the residents have been pushing hard.

All of western Montana has wolves, but I think I would head to the Missoula side of Lolo Pass.

Libby area saw wolf tracks in the snow last Nov. deer hunting over there. Talked to a father son duo hunting them one day he got one the previous year long shot in a snowy basin said it weighed 85 lbs. There tough to call in they don't expose them, selves. I would watch remote logging roads in the am, as they use them for their highway.
