Title: first Rimrock scout trip in the books
Post by: Seatown5 on July 24, 2013, 06:11:47 AM
At last, i made it over to 364. Which is hopefully where my dreams come true. Learned quite a bit  during my first weekend there.  the only gas station is at white pass, make sure to fill up add you enter unit.  No cell reception anywhere. Make sure your ac doesn't burn out, especially when its 103 degrees out.  Now the good stuff.  We saw six legal bucks! About 40 head of elk which was very uplifting and one three point bull, plus two spikes.  All that was from the car though. I just wanted to get a lay of the land. Every time i did try and hike i got stopped by a wall of trees. When you are hiking this unit do most of you use the common hiking trails or do you bring a machete. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Oh yeah, never expected tosee so many camps in Conrad Meadows, that kind of sucks.

Yeah, its a ZOO Labor Day weekend with all the campers.  People from the lake all the way to the top!  Sucks, because there are a lot of idiots out shooting guns, driving 4x4 trails and roads, the weekend before Archery season starts on Tuesday.  Elk get bumped out of areas and you need to figure out where they go when they feel pressured.

Im surprised at all the reports of seeing multiple bucks in this unit. Its not known for its deer, I've spent alot of time in there and hardly seen any. Glad to hear they are making a comeback.

The Elk dont just leave because of Labor Day weekend. 4x4ing, shooting ect happen all summer. The Elk that are in the area are used to it.
Just like Little Natches, Nile, Bumping ect. We use it for 4 x 4 ing all summer. As do many others. As well shooting were legal.
Only an idiot would make a statement like that calling others idiots because there legally using a resource that was made for these types of activities. Maybe you should hunt off the roads!

Elk are pretty smart when it comes to human traffic, they don't leave they just bunker down.
A few years ago I was on the Nanum on labor day weekend. My family set out for a picknick. We found a meadow and parked then proceded to eat out lunch. A few minutes latter a small heard of elk came out of the timber about ten cows with a few spikes in tow. We sat and watched the elk while we ate, with no warning the elk walked right back into the timber. About a minute latter we could hear a jeep coming into the spot we were at. The jeep drove up  turned around and left never seeing the elk. About two minutes after the jeep left the elk came right back out to the meadow and proceded to eat there lunch as we ate ours. These animals adapt very quickly to high human traffic, they have to in order to survive.

 :yeah:
For sure!
2 years ago when Little Natches opened for Cows I hunted Cows right in the valley who were on the same route all summer. That labor day weekend was full of Jeeps, bikes ect and these Elk never gave it a second look.

By Friday I had them patterend and shot one right in the middle of everyone. These Elk did not feel pressured all summer until guys started stalking them on tuesday....

Heading up that way on August 2nd to do some scouting.  Got a any bull tag to fill during modern season.  Good to hear there are animals in the area.  Will be solo for most of the hunt from Oct. 23rd on so if there are any others out there interested in getting connected up let me know.

Dude, don't get your panties in a bunch.  Maybe "idiots" was a little storng.  More frustration on my part that we used to get to hunt elk and deer beginning Labor day weekend before all the extra pressure caused by these "recreational" users.  Not saying the elk leave, but definitely change patterns due to extra pressure.

I have many trail cams that go blank (or animals go nocturnal) every year around the 4th of July and Labor Day holidays.  Yes, people do use the resource all summer.  But, the density of the people around these holiday's is what causes them to go hide.  I agree, the limited number of users during the rest of the summer have little or no affect on the elk.

No, I don't hunt the roads.  I've been hunting these beautiful creatures for over 38 years (the last 34 years with a bow) and I've shot my elk opening day for the last several years.  So, I'm no idiot my friend and have been successful determining where they go when pressured.  I just remember better times when we didn't have to compete with these types of recreational users, many of whom are NON-hunters.  Heck, I have an old 72 Blazer I like to get out on the trails sometimes.  I also have many rifles, pistols and muzzleloaders that I'll take out and shoot from time to to time.  Just not right before archery season in the areas I plan to hunt!

Hey Pete,

I resemble those remarks too.  It's more the density of people during the holiday weekends that affect the elk, not the activities.  As I stated in my original post, you definitely need to figure out where they are holing up to be successful.

See you soon!
