Title: Rifles as wedding gifts
Post by: Southpole on July 24, 2013, 05:16:46 PM
My husband thinks it's too personal to give the bride and groom a "his and hers" hunting rifle for a wedding gift. I thought it was a great idea (since I have no other ideas). What do you guys think?

Too personal? Never heard of that one before... are they close friends? Do it I'd say! Sounds awesome.

My husband is the best man and I'm a brides maid if that gives you any idea how close we are. I want to do it, I just have to convince him it's not that personal... it's a free firearm for god sake's!

I think it sounds brilliant much better than a toaster or place setting or whatever it is they usually do for wedding things....plus they are then equally armed in the event.... :chuckle: :chuckle:

Do you know for a fact that neither is a felon or has any restriction regarding owning a firearm? That would be a problem for you.

I dunno, I kind of think it is a bit personal myself.  But, as long as you didn't expect them to hunt with the rifles just because you bought them, I guess it would be very cool.  Like a matching set of Winchester 94's in 30-30 or something classic and cool like that...

I think any kind of firearm is good stock. Kind of like buying gold. Even if they don't like them, they still have cash value or a good tool. I don't expect them to treat them like there one and only best rifle or anything. Neither bride or groom have a decent hunting rifle, they're both young and they both want to hunt, soooo....

I think its a great idea! I doubt you would be giving them to a hard core criminal, but it should stir this thread up a bit ;)

What caliber you thinking?
I think I will get her a .243 because she's kind of a weenie about recoil and rifle weight and him I think I will get him a .270 or 30-06, haven't decided yet. Either one, I don't want to get all exotic or expensive.

I think it's a great idea! go with the 06 as it can cover all of his needs even though I've only owned 2 that I rebarreled without shooting, I still think it's one of the best all around cartridges.

I still have a certificate for a matched pair of rifles as a wedding gift. They were to be in .35 Wheeling and .243 Win after 33+ years nada.

I think it's a great idea. I'd love to have a nice firearm for any occasion, preferrably they put the budget for my rifle and my wife to be rifles together, and buy ME an even better rifle.  :chuckle: :chuckle:

Go for it.  Although a .308 with a muzzle brake will not kick much more than a .243 and will work on elk as well.  Don't get the guns engraved or anything though as that would reduce resale value if that is an issue.

Good point on the engraving. The idea of engraving was a thought, but then I remembered watching a TV episode of someone trying to sell a gun with their name engraved on it and the buyer didn't want because of that... can't remember what show it was. Either way, no go with engraving.

Still think a pair of good ol' Win 94's in 30-30 is the ticket...

As long as it is not a Smossy wedding I don't see a problem.  Then again the squaw and I wanted a "No Gift" wedding and friends and family found that idea offensive.  So what do I know  :dunno:

Have a friend who had the same thing happen - people were giving him crap because he didn't want them to buy him a toaster.  He's not the kind to beat around the bush, so he ended up sending out an email to the effect of "I have everything I need except this wonderful woman as my wife.  I don't want to be saddled with taking back all of the unnecessary stuff we don't want to the same stores you had to go to buy it from just for the sake of giving you something to buy for me.  Let's all just save our time and money for the important things in life - like the reception."
Something like that, anyway.

Love me some sizzup!

Yeah son!  We be sippin' some PURPLE DRANK

Ok, true story - never tried it, just learned what all that was a few weeks ago.

Go for it.  I gave my wife to be a shotgun for Valentines day once.  But no ammo.  My brothers gave "us" a chainsaw for our wedding.  My wife will be the first one to admit it was the most useful gift we got.

The best wedding gift idea I've heard of . . . they'll always remember it. Definitely 30-06 for him and you might consider 7mm-08 for her, light recoil and more versatile for larger game.

I have a 15 year anniversary coming in August if you want to test your theory first. :-P

If you have a local gun store that you like to support, maybe a gift certificate for 2 rifles would be a good comprimise, I can understand not wanting to buy something like a rifle, as we all have our preference, and they might not have had a chance to pickup and hold what they may like, either that or go with a solid known platform in common calibers and let them know they can trade in/up if wanted?  :dunno:

I think its a great idea, I plan on doing the no gift thing at our wedding, maybe a cash tree but even that I dont like the idea of... now if someone showed up with a 45-70 my whole opinion on wedding gifts would change in a heartbeat lol.

Well, that's just what I did. I went to Cabelas to shop around and decided to get a gift certificate in the amount I was willing to spend on them. I made them promise to buy at least two firearms with the certificate. There were just too many rifles to choose from. I was also thinking if they wanted something better than what I was going to get them, they can throw more of their own money in. Also, I want them to have the guns in their names in case they decide they want to recreate the Bonnie and Clyde days in the future. Someone else got them a gift certificate for Cabelas as well, so that will also help with some purchasing. So, there's my story. It's not nearly as exciting as opening a gift and seeing a rifle, but it was a lot safer and they were still pretty happy and surprised.
