I could be mistaken but I don't thing any of Mt. Adams is in the Lewis river unit.  Now I know that Mt. St. Helens is and yes timber line is good.  Make sure you know the boundary though because it is against the law to hunt above timber line on Mt. St Helens.

Then you obviously don't know the unit.

I'm totally for sharing info with other members, that's what this site is about. But maybe we shouldn't be posting as much specifics on the forum. I think PM is better so the whole world can't see it. Some of us hunt that unit in the regular season and don't want everyone to find out the good areas we worked hard for.

On a separate note to the OP, I'm doing a scouting trip up there tomorrow and depending on what I see I will shoot you a pm.

Big unit. Get out and scout. With  that tag should be able to find a decent bull.

why would the lewis river unit be up by Mt Adams, the river only runs off of Mt. Adams  :o

On a serious note.. that unit is so huge, get up in the alpines and hunt slow and glass... I have seen monsters in there during the rut.

As I said before I may be wrong.  No need to be azz hats. Good luck getting any good info on here with all the happy folks chiming in.  If you want any info on the west side of the unit shot me a pm.

Get and burn some boot leather. I see you're from dallesport so you can be in the unit scouting in about a half hour. I'm also from the husum area, so I'm not going to offer up any honey holes. Get out there put in some time and you will be rewarded greatly with that tag

Not being an azz just stating a point that if you didn't think the unit was near Mt Adams timber line than you aren't that familiar with that side of the unit. I was giving the OP some info on the unit that I have hunted for twenty five years

I don't think anyone was being an a-hat, Hunter D. You made an incorrect statement and were corrected by those in the know. All's good.

I find it interesting that the Lewis River and Mt. Adams Wilderness tags overlap areas.  Because of that, I believe that there could actually be 7 tag holders legally hunting the Mt. Adams wilderness if the two Lewis River tag holders decided to hunt there.  I was only planning on competing with the other four Mt. Adams Wilderness tag holders for a big bull, now I might have to out maneuver two more hunters.  :chuckle:  Good luck with your tag timm and welcome to the site.

Isn't this true with any Elk Area, that there'll be hunters with tags for that area AND tags for the unit in general, which contains the elk area?  :dunno:

To pianoman, the answer to your question is yes and no.  In the case of units like Rimrock, Bumping, etc, an any bull tag holder will be hunting during the general season.  But for the Lewis River and Mt. Adams Wilderness any bull hunts, there are no other elk hunts occurring at that time.  So it just surprised me that these hunts overlap boundaries.  My hunt is within the boundaries of the Mt. Adams Wilderness, which I believe most, if not all of, is within the boundaries of the Lewis River unit.  The Lewis River unit is BIG, and the only give away 2 tags, while they give away 5 for the Mt. Adams Wilderness.  I wonder why they don't just combine the two hunts into one, and give away 7 tags for the Lewis River hunt, and the tag holder could still hunt the Mt. Adams Wilderness if they chose to.

You shouldn't need much help.  Your hunting partner knows the unit as well as anyone!!!
