Post by: Hunter Henry on October 20, 2008, 08:23:05 PM
Looking for a new place to hunt buffalo, our place in montana sold the herd. It doesn't need to be an experience just a meat hunt.

Not sure about your poll question but there is a place in Swauk that has buffalo, its just as you head over the Blewett highway in Teanaway.

We had a wonderful experience with an outfitter in central Montana that put us on the Crow nation reservation.  essentially a free roaming yet managed herd.  I was told that this was an unusual opportunity afforded us by the Crow.  I also heard that the population was beyond capacity and they were looking to open it up to more non-tribal hunters.

Yea, I'd be up for that, cow, small bull or whatever as long as it is Buffalo meat...

When I brought my bobcat in to the taxi a couple years ago he said there was a place near turnbull. He was mounting some skulls for a couple of guys who had shot some. Anyhow it sounds like a pretty easy deal if thats what your looking for basically pick one out and drop it. It seems to me you can buy a trophy bull or a meat bull or cow but I'm not sure. I could be waaaaayyyy of base but it's worth a call.

Sorry I'm so vague, I tried to google it but came up with nada. maybe if you call the taxidermist he'll know what I'm talking about and then you can call the ranch for more specific info.

Here's the taxi's number: Fuson's 509-276-1040

Hope that helps, sorry I don't have better info.

Hi Harry, We went up to Saskatchewan and shot OLD bulls. They were 12 and 16 years old. i always wanted a BIG old bison head for my wall and I certainly got what I wanted. We got a deal tat we just couldn't refuse. The wife and I love the meat although the steaks and roasts off of such an old bull are a bit chewey to say the least. The burger is, well burger. You get the point. I work with a some guys that went over to Idaho or Montana a couple of years ago. I can't remember which, and they shot young two and three year old bulls. A couple of them shot young cows. They gave me some of the steaks and roasts from those animals and the meat was very tender. If you are looking for a meat bull or cow then Idaho or Montana is where I would look. I do know that almost all of the places that sell their bison do so on a some what sliding scale. Bull's up to three years of age are a set price and then the price goes up for every year older. Also some of the places that we researched only let you keep a certain amount of the meat. I would just let my fingers do the walking through the internet and see what I could find. I'm sure with the economy in the tank like it is now, you should be able to get a "deal". I would deffinately shoot one during the winter months if it were me. We shot ours during the last week of November last year and the hides or "robes" as they are called were nothing short of fantastic. If you don't get the head mounted then I would highly suggest in getting the hide tanned. As a last note. To give you an idea of what a smoking deal we got. We shot HUGE herd bulls that yeilded 750lbs of cut and wrapped meat. The price for the whole animal was $1500. This guy had about 2700 head of bison and was just getting rid of some of his older bulls. I know that he took out ten or twelve last year and I am pretty sure that he is going to do the same thing this year. Good luck in your search. Send me a PM if you would like. I checked with my taxidermist last week or so and he is just now starting to work on my bull shoulder mount. I know this is a long winded response but to give you an idea just how big these critters are, the circumference of my bulls neck where it meets the head was 57 inches around!! Yeah, almost 5 feet!!

There is a guy outside of Fishtrap, which is just about 20 miles west of Spokane, it's not a "hunt" by any means but he does let you shoot a buffalo.  I'll get the number and post it for you.

Kalispel does offer limited hunts. They hold your hand out and point and say take that one, its soley a culling operation, but as you said, its meat, lots of meat.  I wouldn't want to shoot one of the old ones though would be my only down thought on the meat part.  here is a pic from a week or two ago.

yeah only 400 acres with a high voltage electric fence. I won a raffle and got to kill one 10 years ago. I showed up they put out some grain and side shot that one. I would had more fun shooting a milk cow lol. but the meat was good. got 709 pounds of meat. Didn't have the money to get a head mount so I had the skull on a shed at my house and it got stolen a year after I got it. So don't have any thing to show for it. gave the hide to the tribe.

He was only a putz if he thinks he's hunting. I see nothing wrong with it. I considered myself. A few hundred pounds of Buff meat sounds good to me. Not buying the thrill of the hunt, just buying the meat. If someone is buying what they call a "hunt" then yes they're a putz but thats not what this operation is.

I don't care how it's down, rifle, pistol, bow, muzzy, sledge hammer, .22 to the back of the head, axe handle, forklift, whatever... I'm considering the same thing for the meat, has to be a young cow or bull for me..  Wife is up for it also, we just really liked Bison meat...  But might be fun with a bow so I can practice in case I ever get redrawn in AK...  Besides I never kept the robe off my son's bull, (gave it to a friend that went with me) wouldn't mind doing the hide for my kid as a huge blanket...  Do you know what it cost out there (WA or Montana), been trying to call the number but either answering machine or ring, ring, ring...  Now- I am on a mission for the fridge, anyone else like to join me and split the gas to and from the east side, I can haul two quartered easily in the enclosed truck bed, out of the elements...  I look at it this way, the cost of meat is crazy anyhow, a whole or half moo cow normally cost an arm and a leg, but you never know what in the ways of additives gets into their system..  Plus for those that haven't had Buffalo meat, it is so darn delicious, extremely healthy and almost fatless... it's crazy, except for the old bulls, yuk!  And the way I have been this season, my fridge is very lonely.................................

Priced out of what I would consider.  I guess I'll have to wait for the drawing in AK or Wyoming...
