Title: Western WA Elk Raffle winner :)
Post by: elkhuntingcouple on July 27, 2013, 09:05:15 PM
:hello: My husband just got notified he won the western wash elk raffle, we have never hunted for horns more just for meat, Any ideas where he should go for a 360 bull? we can hunt anywhere Western WA as long as there is some type of hunting allowed so all the special permit areas, He can hunt with any weapon, from Sept 1 to Jan 1. We are a little excited!!!  What areas have others hunted for this tag? Loowit???? we have a couple of weeks vacation for archery so we think that will be our time to spend for him a nice wall hanger BULL. WOOT WOO
I am so excited for him!! well and me I will get to see these beautiful animals, normally we hunt packwood area, or up by mt Adams, not as many animals there as I have heard of in the loowit.   Any ANY information will be appreciated! We can't afford a guide, wish we had that kind of money but plain and simple we don't. But are willing to walk our asses off to get a nice Bull.  Thanks ahead of time for information!!

360 is going to be a stretch IMO, you might send rafflemule a PM to see if he can hook you up with someone that knows the peninsula area. His buddies have helped auction tag winners in the past and know the west side very well. :twocents:

Lucky! If it were me I would be looking for some help from some people who lived in the county you want to hunt, probably be Skagit and end of September. Also 360 on the wet side could be tough; personally id want some character. Good luck, and keep us updated!

Im shocked to hear people suggest the nooksack for 360+ bulls. Ive seen some nice ones there before and some great ones that are long gone but that is not even in my top 5 places I would go with that tag. Im not trying to stir the pot, im just shocked.

Like 270shooter said, Goat rocks would be a good choice, and I'd bet you'd find a lot of help for the Nooksack unit.  Lots of knowledge from locals up there.

Very cool. It should be an awesome time n matter where you go. Its a great opertunity.

I think people are sugguesting the nooksack because there are some good heavy horned bulls in there with little pressure compared to other areas. Not because you will find the next record bull.

Does the raffle tag holder get access keys to timber land? If not the nooksack would be hard to hunt.

Congratulations, that is very cool hope to see some good pictures. As far as where to go there are a lot of choices and options I have never been to the nooksack  but have heard a lot of good stuff about this area. I myself would probably stay around goat rock/ mt. adams area mainly because I am more familiar with the area. 360 is a big goal but not out of the realm of possibilities. Good luck excited to hear about your hunt!

Congrats that will be an awesome hunt. Like others have said 360 on the westside is a tall order. One thing to consider is do you want to hunt a true coastal roosevelt (which is the toughest big bull of all to kill) or do you not care about that and just want the best scoring bull you can get and go after a cascade roosevelt? That is what I would first decide and then I could decide where to hunt and its purely personal. Myself I would go for a true coastal bull in the brushy jungle they call home keying on Sept 25-Oct 5 but a realistic trophy bull even with your tag that would be hard to pass up would be 320. Goat rocks or Mt Adams ,bigger bulls and completely different hunt and nothing wrong with that either, like I said personal preference. Good luck and enjoy the hunt and dont let inches get in the way of the experience nwhunter

Thank you!!! I put the 360 my husband laughed at me too!! Kinda excited for him, and me too! I love hunting, We normally hunt Archery, and any Elk with a bow is a trophy, thats what my husband has drilled into my head.  :o But we want the big bad ole boy, Wall hanger for sure!! Thanks for any information you have, we have heard a lot about White River and Nooksack, going to go pick up some maps and see what we can find out. Both of those are a long ass why from home, so scouting won't be as easy. Dang

weve hunted baby shoe pass area of MT Adams, those are good questions, and the dates are something to think of, I am still stuck in my mind on reg archery dates, I think sitting it back a little might be a good idea, more vocal. I am so excited, no we will not let inches get in the way of our time in the woods. Everyday in the woods hunting is a great day in my book!! Since we have only really hunted Adams, packwood winston creek, toutle area, the areas up north or even south are unknowen tous. So trying to listen to what people are telling us. We are not the type of people that think we know it all, thats for sure, so much area, so many oppertunities right now, it is just pure excitement!!!   Oh do I have ELK FEVER BAD!!!!!

No I don't think so. We will get the information in the mail soon!! I would hope so get a special key! but i can't see them doing that! We don't need a record Bull but a record for us. We were laughing at scoring bulls, we have not really thought of it! Any other suggestions or people to call, get ahold of I will do what it takes to help get my hubby a BIG BULL.   and me an adventure of a life time. :) Cant wait!!!

Title: Re: Western WA Elk Raffle winner :)

Could be wrong but I don't think it's valid for Kapowsin by itself, at least unless you get a blessing from Hancock.  It's Hancock's own restrictions that limit the elk hunting in there, not the WDFW's.  Technically Mashel is open to general season hunting, but it is Hancock that limits the hunters and amount of bulls to be taken.  If Hancock would be willing to let you hunt there, that'd be the place hands down.

I cannot find that unit or is it a unit? Looked through game management units, where is it located at?

We need some specifics, areas, we looked at Nooksack and White Water they are HUGE areas, where do we start, roads, areas, we are seeking advice,  so wish we had money to pay someone. But God gave us good legs, and big hearts, we will find the right area. As my husband says just let me get lost and i end up with elk. LOL but that is a very scary thing!!

THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR INFORMATION we will take more!!

Hancock is what the private timber co is called, it's in the mashel unit. Their number is 360-879-5312. I would also consider the white river unit, that's where I would be if I couldn't get access to Hancock. I will tell you about the white river, just pm me with your number.

If you buy a white river pass they will let you hunt that they won't let you hunt kapowsin all permits are sold out and I don't think they would allow it anyway's white river GMU holds some good bull's alot of area's besides hancock ... Good luck on your hunt!

That is great news, congrats!!!

I'm not sure what Westside unit is your best bet. Several years ago it would have been a no-brainer but the Nooksack quality has dropped. A 330-340 bull is a monster these days.

The most important thing to do is have fun with that tag. Good luck!!!

Yes, past hunters were given a key also.

Elkhuntingcouple, if you are planning to hunt the Nooksack, you should call the LaConner WDFW office (360 466-4345) and tell them so.

Nothing at all wrong with a 330-340 bull on the west side.  With the mass that comes out of the Nook, a 340 bull would be awesome to see.  Plus, how many could tell the difference between a 340 and a 360 without measuring.  That is only 20 points.  So if you have a 340 inch 5x5, the only difference is a 360 with the same characteristics of horns would have each point be 2 inches longer.  And if it is a 6x6 or bigger, that 2 inches turns into and 1.  I would go to the Nooksack if it was me

I keep thinking about this thread and what I would do with the tag. The only thing I know for sure 100% is that it would take a hell of a lot of discipline to not shoot at a bull that did not meet my personal goals. Especially if hes slobbering, pissing, and screaming 40 yards away. The hardest part of the hunt might be keeping your finger off the trigger with no guarantees of what tomorrow will bring. for a second i was almost glad i don't have to worry about that. On second thought it might have been a microsecond.

Damn forest service is keeping the gate closed at corral pass, guess the don't have the money to suck out the crapper up there! What a load of bs. That takes one nice area out of the picture or at the least will make it a lot tougher of a hunt. At least it's not the best area!

I swung by the Enumclaw office a few weeks ago to ask about the Corral Pass gate...they said it was strictly due to funding so ya better have a dirt bike to get up there.
I was gonna head up to the Noble knob area and veture off trail a bit to scout for bear but my plans had to change. Anyone ever seen that country around Noble Knob with respect to bear hunting?

i don't believe it would be legal to ride a dirt bike or quad behind the locked gate, it is a forest service road? They said they don't have the personnel to suck out the chitter, so why not just Lock the damn thing! They said they have been getting a lot of flack from people because of not opening it, they should get a lot more!!

I was gonna head up to the Noble knob area and veture off trail a bit to scout for bear but my plans had to change. Anyone ever seen that country around Noble Knob with respect to bear hunting?
I am pretty sure if you were seen in there with a motorized bike that would result in a ticket. I would call and ask first. I have been wrong before though
I've been talking with a guy that has a tag and he stopped by and ask them that question, they said NO.

Roger that. I am that guy. The guy on the phone said he didn't think it would be a problem.
When I asked what would happen if I was stopped by an officer, he asked the ranger in the office. I was quickly told no motorized vehicals behind the gate except snowmobiles  when the road is covered.      RATS!!!! :bash:

I think if I had the permit I'd be scouting the areas up off of Hwy 12 up by White Pass.  It is close enough that I could scout it every weekend.  There has to be some big bulls up there. :twocents:

they still have not sent out the package, but talking to Margie who handles this at Washington Fish and Wildlife she said we can hunt any unit except 485, or a unit that only allows spike bull hunts, which on our side of the mountian I don't think is any, but we will of course read the material once we have it in our hands. We are both very much law abiding people, and wouldn't hunt where we should not. With this tag that would be beyond stupid :) Thanks again for all the input!! and Wongway Congrats on your hunt!!

Isn't the raffle tag an additional tag? I believe it is. So he WOULD have two tags. Problem is, the general season tag wouldn't be good at the same times as the raffle tag. Unless he was hunting during a general season, but why do that when you don't have to?

In essence it is a second tag.  But I would not do What he states. One lets say you are in the Nook. You are only in there because you have that tag.  So shoot the biggest bull you are happy with.  Them during the general season shoot what ever you can legally shoot for meat.  Just my two cents

Not sure how rumors of a 360 bull started but it was not 360.
There were 360 bulls seen but never harvested..
John had a adventure for sure. With 4 months of hunting you can have alot of fun ..... And stress......
He ran into a lot of bad luck. Horrible weather, and sometimes just not in the right place at the right time. But that is hunting.... I was glad to have met him and his wife and glad they let me tag along a couple times. I also got to meet some other die hard hunters by tagging along.. John in the end notched his tag and he is happy..

I've always been a pretty private hunter.  Im the last guy that would ever tote my kill around just to brag, but the least they could do is get on here and lets us know how the hunt went.  She came on here and wanted every ones opinions on where to go, then just disappears and doesn't at least show the ending results. Even if you don't want to show the results, maybe get on here and tell some stories and give thanks to those that helped or something. :dunno:

Exactly, announcing it on here and asking for help, you would think that they would post the story.

I'm pretty sure he doesn't want to hear a bunch of crap like, why did he shoot that bull or, damn that's small for a raffle tag... and so on.  Rosscrazyelk pretty much summed up the guys hunt, he had fun and worked hard.  He didn't get the bull he was hoping for and I can imagine the pressure put on him to kill a monster then post it up.  I agree with you guys about him letting you all know how it went because of asking for help, maby he will give his own report. But just remember the crap some guys get for posting on here, and with that big of a tag in your pocket, that's a lot of opinions and pressure.  I'd love to have that tag to see how it feels!!!!

Not the first time someone on here gets a tag of a lifetime and then dissapears when the results arent what they were hoping for, its there right to do so. A great tag doesnt guarantee a record book animal. Its still a hunt and mother nature can throw plenty of curveballs and there are no slamdunks on any hunt when you arent just out to shoot the first one you see. Bottom line is any bull on the westside over 300 is a trophy and there is no shame in that. Eastside bulls over 350 are tough to get and most guys couldnt pass either of these type of bulls up. Hopefully this hunt produced lots of good memories and regardless of what type of bull was killed it was the hunt of a lifetime for the people involved. That part of the hunt never gets added into the score but should be important too. Now I hope I get the tag this year!!  nwhunter

Well said, nwhunter. Hopefully the guy had a great time, made new memories and new friends and killed a bull. That would make me happy. I hope he's not regretting any of it. I'd like to see the bull and I'd venture a guess to say that nobody would be crap talking any of it.

I just saw this quote on Facebook from Ryan Hatfield and it couldn't be more fitting.

" In today's instant gratification society, more and more pressure revolves around success and the measurement of one's prowess as a hunter by inches on a score chart or field photos produced on social media. Don't fall into the trap. Hunting is-and always be- about the hunt, the adventure, the views, and time spent with close friends and family. " Ryan Hatfield

I put a friend on 6x7 last season with a quality tag he put in for years. He shot an inch under its vitals @ 50 yards. That's hunting, and as said before there are no guarantees.

I'd like to see pics of any bull. People understand with a tag like that, you hold out for a while in hopes of real masher but sometimes you end up shooting whatever bull presents a shot to notch your tag. I would have no shame hanging a quality tag on a spike if I hunted hard for the season and it came down to that.

:dunno: Does anyone obey a hunters code of conduct ??  My #1 rule as an avid hunter is this ..When you find a good hunting spot YOU NEVER TELL ANYONE ...I want everyone to kill at least one big bull in their life but my back yard has been posted all over the internet and it starting to seriously tick a lot of people off ... :dunno: :sry: Nice bull by the way ...maybe since the state has sooooo many rules they can add this one ...Hunters who live in areas where there are elk can only apply for permits that live within a 50 mile radius of that particular unit ... hahahahahahaha This should get good ..... ;)

I agree, there a lot of nice bulls in the Sack,  but ive yet to see any real jaw droppers in there.  A lot of guys think it's a slam dunk since you can see the elk from the highway, but it isn't.
