Title: Yellow jackets!
Post by: Quackwhacker on July 28, 2013, 02:18:33 PM
Wife, kids and I went up to the Mt. Spkone area for a bbq. Our friends told my son (12) about a natural spring that was down below the cabin. Son being the adventurous type , ask if he could go find the spring and wanted me to help him. Daughter (14) thought she better go to even though she was in a summer dress and sandals.  Son and I were in shorts a sandals.

The hill side we were going down was steep and thick with brush and blow downs. On our adventure we found some fresh deer droppings and picked some flowers for my wife. My son hollered from below daughter and I. He had located the spring and sounded excited.

Daughter and I worked our way down to him and saw the 6 foot wide pool. Son had found a deer scull and some other bones. We all talked about the spring and how the animals had tore up the vegetation around it.

We decided to find a trail down to the road for a easier walk back. Daughter went ahead and found a good trail. Son was below next to some skunk cabbage. I headed towrds daughter when I felt something poke my leg. I thought it was a twig. Then it it me again and I looked down and yelled BEES! Daughter kept going down her trail. I ran up hill about twenty feet and killed the few that were still hitting me. Son started screaming and saying they were getting him. I yelled at his to go down hill. He was panicking at tgis piint and started to go to the ground. I ran back across the ground hive and grabbed him and took him the thirty yards to the road. There were yellow jackets all over him and I now. They really liked to be in his Justin Bieber hair. I had to hit him on the head several times to kill the angree little guys. He was obviously in some pain but we still laughed about the incident. Daughter made it with no stings. I had about a dozen shots to my arms and legs. Son had around twenty. Im glad I was down there with him.

We walked back to the cabin and told our story. After talking for a few minutes, son started to break out in hives and obviously was having a reaction to the stings. We decided to take him in to the hospital. By the time we got there, the hives had covered his upper body and head. Gave him a steroid IV and benadryl. He was out like a light.

Left the ER after about an hour. He was tired but still in good spirits. The next day he was cleared up and back to himself. He has been stung before with no reaction. Guess the large amount of venom got him going.  I'm sure this won't be his last encounter with ground hives as he loves to explore. I just hope he knows to run next time.

Yellow Jackets are mean!

Yikes--praise God that your OK.  Be sure to follow up with your PCP (primary care physican).  Now that he has had a reaction he may be prone to accelerated reactions in the future ("sensitization"). Doc may want boy to carry an epinepherine auto injector (EpiPen). They are a bit cumbersome but could save your life. They are also temperature sensitive. Don't leave them in a hot car or put them in the refrigerator.

PSA to everyone else:

Scary deal right there. Been there and done that. Had my latest run in yesterday on my roof. I was cleaning moss off and walked up and banged on one of the vent covers that had some stuff hanging off of it, well about 100 yellow jackets bombed out of it and after me. I was tempted to dive off the roof but managed my way down the ladder and out of the yard. Only got stung a couple of times

If you think those are bad, wait untill you have an encounter with Bald faced hornets. Theyre black and white wasps. They're horrid.
I was out in the back of my girls property last year, Going through the thick thick brush of stingin nettles and chopping the 6 foot tall plants down with a machete I just got passed down to me from her grandmother that I cleaned up, Wanted to put some use to it..

Keep in mind these guys make they're hives in the ground, so they come from below up.
I was whacking away these weeds, Feeling my legs getting poked constantly, I just thought for a second that the nettles were getting through my jeans so I thought nothing of it. about 2 minutes into it I really started to hurt, I finally looked down.... Both my legs were COVERED in bee's like one of those crazy killer bee videos. I immediately freak out and start thrashing at them, made a B line right through a trail swatting with my hat and everything, Dropped the machete, Lost my glasses for 2 days, and left my hat laying in the trail. Ran straight for the back door to the house, Half way to the door, I slip in a hole that one of the stupid dogs dug, heard a huge pop... Literally thought I snapped my ankle trying to run from these guys. Half ran/limped inside to my girl who I was yelling at like AHH BEE's get them off me. By the time I got inside Id got most of them off but had a few stragglers. Wound up with like 20+ stings, Girl threw me into the tub, covered me in baking soda/water paste.
As my heart starting to slow down I could really feel the pain and started to feel sick. Thank god I'm not allergic to bee's or I could have been in for a hell of a night. Ever since then, I've hated bee's. I have a soft spot for honey bee's though as to they're numbers are becoming very limited these days.
Killed one that was still on me by drowning him, that's what we used to ID what species it was. Never in my life had I seen a black bee with white stripes and white face. They are in the yellowjacket family.

So Quackwhacker I feel your pain  :chuckle: Literally. Glad you and the kids were ok! That stuff can really hit people hard and fast sometimes.

I had a similar incident after killing a cow elk.

I was walking back from the kill to camp for some supplies, all covered in blood from field dressing, and I hear the guys yelling at me, "run, run". I turned around and looked at an enormous swarm of yellow jackets coming out of a ground nest that had to have been 4+ feet across. I had just walked through it. I looked down and my legs were covered with bees and I realized I was being stung. I ran through the woods for a couple hundred yards and they all took off, except for one. I got back to camp and felt a tickle in my shirt. I pulled the top open and a yellow jacket flew right up my nose and stung me way up inside. I was seeing stars it hurt so bad. I took off all of my clothes to make sure that was the end of it and had stings all over both legs. No reaction, but it sure sucked.

Glad your son made it out ok   I was clearing land last year and when I moved a rotten log I was swarmed.  My first thought was bees and I ran a few yards turned around and saw a swarm coming at me.  I then ran out of the green lot into a random yard and turned on there sprinkler and stood in it.  I noticed they were yellow jackets after it was all done (some were still on my clothes)  and I was stung about 17 times.  I think they sprayed me with a phermone or something becuase of the distance they chased me.  I remeber feeling sick and I just went home and laid on the couch feeling dizzy and hungover at the same time.  I should have gone to the hospital :twocents:

I got nailed as a kid a few times by yellow jackets. I grew a large fear for those things at a young age. I just hate them! I have a lot of respect for N American honey bees, as they would rather keep working than bother anyone, which is a lesson a lot of us humans could learn from. Scary stories everyone, YIKE. I saw some black and white hornet looking bee/wasp things on a small nest up in the corner of a state outhouse while camping last week. They were new to me and did not attack. Never seen a black and white hornet, it sounds as though a lot of folks have not had good encounters with them!

Many species are now common here.  Check out extension bulletin 643 (EB 643) from WSU.  In the ground, paper nest above ground and nests in any convenient hole are everywhere this year.  They are great hunters of some destructive insects but you just can not live with the nasty little monsters.

I must be pretty lucky to be able to say I've never been stung. After hearing what you guys have experienced, Im glad I haven't lol. But its not for lack of trying. Last summer was probably the closest I've come. We had some yellow jackets living in the corner of our roof. I didnt notice them until the wife said her dog was getting stung any time she walks by. So I got a few cans of wasp spray, and proceeded to cut loose. And boy oh boy that was a mass exodus. Hundreds started coming out of the roof, and most weren't dying. I soon realized I was outnumbered and out gunned. So I did the next logical thing, I got closer. I suited up in all my winter carhartt gear, much to my wifes amusement, and equipped myself with two cans of great stuff. Fun fact! Bugs and expanding foam don't get along. The once large and intimidating nest is now a cold and dark tomb of eternal embarrassment that serves as a warning to all stinging insects.    Mitch 1.    Yellow jackets 0.

The yellow jackets have been really bad this year. I just got back from Lake Coeur d’Alene and the house we rented had a nest the size of a basketball on the eve. I blasted it with 2 full cans of nest killer and the next day there were still live ones when I knocked it down.

Awful little things.

Wow.  Never been stung....... :o  My wife is the same way.  She has not been stung yet, and she is terrified of them.  (I really wish she would get stung just so she knows what it is like.  I think not knowing maybe is worse than the actual sting).

Me, I've been stung hundreds of times.  Some have been worse than others.

My poor dog got stung when we were pheasant hunting.  He stood over the top of a ground nest and the next thing we knew he had probably 100 yellow jackets on him.  He was a lab with really thick hair and those buggers attacked and they all just kind of disappeared into his fur all at once.  Poor guy just kind of stood there getting stung; and I got him moved away from the hive a ways and then swatted some wasps.  I got stung a few times, but he must have been stung dozens of times.  It was weird how he just kind of froze when the wasps attacked; I don't know if he thought he was getting hit with the shock collar or what?

Yellow Jacket nest. I just had it removed about an hour ago. I was glad to fork out the cash to have it done  :chuckle: Besides my wife made it quite clear to have it removed and not by me  :chuckle: The guy said it was one of the biggest hes seen in a long time. I guess about 10 years ago there was a late spring freeze that knocked down the YJ population around here and it is finally getting back to normal levels. He was telling me he is getting quite a few calls now. I watched him from inside the house and I couldn't believe how many were in there. And they were PISSED OFF.

Dang!  10 stings at my house 45 minutes ago!!!

My son and daughter have been working in our front yard today moving brush into a trailer. My son got into a Wasp ground nest and got stung 10 times! He ran into the house with atleast 7 under his shirt and pants. I got all his clothes off him and got some benadryl in him. 30 minutes later he looks pretty good thank goodness.

got stung twice Saturday on Lopez Island.  One was buzzing me and I swatted at him.  got caught between my first two fingers and frickin stung me.

Other one--Was waiting in ferry line.  Darn thing flew up my shorts and stung me on the side of my leg.  Was doing just fine with swelling on Benadryl. Now not so good... swelling has come back and travelled down my leg to knee cap.  Walk in clinic might be in my future tonight.

Yeah wasps hornets yellow jackets and bald faced wasps can all go extinct for all I care. Had a bald face land on me a couple weeks ago while in the middle of lake Wenatchee fishing luckily it was pretty chilly and it was moving rather slow. Already have nuked half a dozen wasp nests around the house this year and I know there's at least a couple more I haven't found yet.

Last time I got nailed was a few years ago. Cousins from mukilteo were over and we went up to chelan to go swimming. We parked Next to the bowling alley across from the city park I noticed a paper nest was knocked down on the sidewalk I warn them to steer clear cause it was crawling with wasps. Well on our way back to the rig one of my brain child cousins decides to give it a three step field goal kick. I'm loading stuff in the truck next thing I know it's bam bam bop bop boom on my legs I look down to see the remains of the nest at my feet and wasps all over my legs. Think I set the world record for the 200 yard sprint and swat. Got stung a few dozen times an just felt sicker than **** once I was home i passed out for a solid 18 hours

I was going door to door trying to mow some lawns as a kid, I reached behind a bush to push on a doorbell and the next thing I knew I was covered in bald faced hornets.  Turns out the guy did not use his front door and had no clue there was a nest there.  That one earned me a trip to the ER with over 75 sting/bites.  When the bee guy came to remove the nest he said it was the biggest he had ever seen!  I still cringe a little when I see one of those nests in the brush.

Dang it you should of called me, i would of done it for free... 8)

Actually thought about doing that. Or making my own Carhartt bee suit  :chuckle: P wanted it gone the next day. Shes deathly afraid of them  :chuckle:

Camping on the NF Flathead last week and they were thick around our campsite.  Wearing flip flops around camp I got stung UNDER my pinky toe.  Not sure how he managed to get there...

When removing ground nests near the house a shop-vac is handy.  Set it up near at the entrance, turn it on, and watch the show.  Vibration angers them, they fly out, and one by one get sucked in.  After 30 minutes activity slows and you just shoot a can of  raid into the vac and the hole.

I see a couple "better 30 minutes later" comments here.

I gave the same comment to my doc last year. I was in Georgia and was stung. I decided not to use my epipen and that the benidryl would be enough. I told the doc it was a rough 30 minutes and I was glad I used the benidryl... He told me the epipen is what is supposed to help keep you a live for the 30 minutes it takes for the benidryl to get circulated in your system.

There is a cool idea...

For the OP I feel your sons pain. When I was a young boy I was playing catch with my sister and she threw a ball into a empty dog house  :'(  There was a yellow jackets nest in there and I got stung more times than my mom could count. Ever since then just one bee sting and swell up like a balloon. Two years ago In deer camp I hung my buck into a tree and didn't notice the bee hive above it  :'( . It was dark out and the Little monsters were falling out of the hive onto my back  :o  My kids were holding the flashlight and start screaming as the bee's are on my back then I get freaked out and then I get stung. I always keep ample benidryl just for those encounters.
