this will be my first year hunting bear. Was trying to find a decent field dressing video on a black bear but didn't really find much on youtube. Is it pretty similar to cleaning a deer? Any help would be appreciated.

If you go to the Hunt-WA home page and scroll down to Bear they have a few tutorials with a lot of info on them. Good luck!

As far as field dressing...Yes, same as deer. Of course caping and skinning is a bit different.
Only real difference in deer and bear field dressing is you want to take extra precautions when cleaning bear due to increased chance of parasites. I would suggest a couple good pairs of Nitrile gloves. Latex if you can't get nitrile easily. Same precautions should be taken with bison and wild boar.
I also like to have a fair amount of blue shop towels in my pack. A greasy fall bear can get a little hazardous when you can't get a good hold on your knife. A little 3" square piece of blue shop towel around the knife handle does wonders for your grip when things get slickery.

It get real interesting when your gutting him out in chest high huckleberry bushes and your by yourself! I sing a few songs out load if I'm doing this alone, I had to do it twice, very nerve racking in the high county. Have fun I hope you get one, its a bit different feeling walking up on a bear you shot than a deer or elk!

Especially when it's pitch dark out and you realize that little beam from your headlamp is the only visible light for miles...

thanks for the advice everyone im looking forward to hopefully getting one.

I'd rather work on one than a deer. One thing you will notice is that bears have more abdominal muscle. When cutting open the gut cavity carefully work through that muscle....then of course make sure you don't punch the gut.

:yike:I've been lucky so far, all were killed and packed out in the light, saw most in the afternoon.

I've never gutted a bear. Skin and remove quarters and backstraps. Or just bone it out in the field. Gutless method I guess.
