i blew my chance to shoot an enormous bear on the 11th had him in the scotchbroom @ 40+/- yards with slugs i couldn't tell which end was which so i let him walk, the next time i saw him i ranged him @ 130 yds. he had no legs and his ears were on the side of his head, i told my two hunting partners that this was by far the biggest bear i'd ever seen, long story short i have honey do's on sunday the 12th i get a phone call to come help get out the bear my buddy caught him eating blueberries about 900yds from where i had seen him, his head green scores right at 23" he was 550 lbs. he's so big the taxidermist had to order a grizzly mold to full body mount him. i will try to get some pics posted, anyone know what the state record is for a blackbear skull?
-
If that is correct information you just smashed the state record of 21 10/16, assuming it was a rifle shot. Archery is 20 10/16
-
I can tell you what the state record is for the "Record Book for Washington's Big Game Animals 2nd edition" is Rifle is 21 10/16, Archery is 20 10/16, and Black Powder is 21 3/16. Hopefully that helps you out a little bit :dunno:
-
Youve got a bunch of bear fanatics on here, lets see the pics! If the specs are correct man that is truly 1 in a million western bear, typically eastern and SE alaska bears grow type type of skull. Congrats to your buddy :)
-
Hey firefighter or phool, can you tell me the name of the muzzeloader/shotgun state record? Is it Walt Huff, if so I have video of the bear and actually snaped 3 caps on him just no discharge.
-
ML is Gene Schul, Walter huff is tied for 3rd at 20 3/16
-
Thanks huntnphool, sure wish I could have anchored that pig.

JoeVon tell him James Petker said hi, and tell him about the site, Walt a good guy I havent talked with him in years. Joe, you should have went to bellingham Tech :chuckle:

Bellingham Tech huh....The hunting was better in Yakima, lol. I'll tell Walt you said hi the next time I see him. He's good people.
-
How did you measure the skull and weigh the body?
-
Are we ever going to get to see it or do we have to wait for a magazine?
-
23" head and 550lbs???? WA state????
That is kind of hard to believe, you better show the pics so I can become a believer.
-
Umm, pictures, you wouldn't by some chance have a couple lying around would ya?
-

i hate to ask questions like this but what unit was he killed in?
-
pics man pics :dunno:
-
We need some pics

Hate to be skeptical, but this really sounds like a fish tale, or somebody smacked a GRIZZ. Once a bear gets over 20, "they start" measureing in 1/8 increments....for a reason... 23 is unreal. Whats world record?

Hi my name is Lars Swartling and I currently have the Washington state record bear. It score is 21 12/16, and is not listed in the Washington record book. This last year it was accepted into Boone and Crockett in the 26th edition. The bear came Mica Peak in Spokane and was shot in 2001.
-
welcome, lars. you ought to start a new thread and post a story and some pics. there's a lot of bear hunting fans on here that i'm sure would love to get the details.
congrats on a great melonhead bear.

Welcome Lars, and that is a dandy bear Poulsbo. I would still suspect the measurement since the largest bear ever killed in the Western half of the us was just listed in Eastmans as 22 and change. Still a great looking bear.
-
Hell, 550lbs and 23" would be BIG for a lower 48 griz. This sounds a bit like a fish story to me. Would love to see some pics and be proven wrong.

Pics are up. Look two posts above you, though those pictures do suck.
-
WOW! I would love to shoot a big bear. Congrats poulsbo. When you get the taxidermy done, you'll have to put up the pics.
-
Congrats Poulsbo, that is one heck of a bear. From the pics, can't tell just how big it is, but it is damn nice. But I stand by my previous statement that a 550lb 23" skull griz in the lower 48 is a BIG grizzly. Congrats on a hell of a bear.
-
I have not seen this bear, but I have spoken to a WDFW Game Officer who has, and YES it is about 550-600 lbs. Not sure of the measurement though.
-
That is a monster bear!!! I can not wait to see an official measurement on him. I have seen one bear that may have gone that big. It was August up at Spencer Meadows. He was hunting elk calves. Mamma elk was having none of it though, and the elk left the meadow at a fast trot. That bear looked like a Volkswagon Beetle walking thru the tall grass on the meadow though.
-
like i posted, i blew my chance at him the day before, it looks exactly like a black v.w. when waddling up the road. i will let ya know what his official score is after dry period, oh ya MR. professional photographer i'm sorry my pics suck!
-
That's a great bear, are there any other pics available?
-
Awesome bear. If you want help posting pics email them to me and I can get it done for you. I'd like to see more if they exist (as I am sure others would too). Is there more to the story?
-
OK now i might be able to believe it
-
Its Definately going to take a swipe at Lars record.
-
we got him out whole his weight was 558 lbs. on a scale not guessed. his measurement was off base by the taxidermist, with a set of calipers it measures 21 5/16, the right side of his head is flat by close to 1/2 inch looks deformed , hit by car??? my buddy shot him with a slug at 35+/- yds the area is one solid patch of blueberries, it's a chunk of private ground thats 30 acre parcel, is a shotgun only area, otherwise i would have had a shot at him on sat. i ranged him broadside at 125 i wish i had my 7mag i would have taken a poke at him . ok here we go with some more pics that suck.
-
Freakin' Awesome!!!! Nice bear.
-
Looks like the "Head" Winner of our little competition is right there......... Doubt anyone can beat that this year.
-
wasn't a member in time for the comp. Not a contender, but that is one hell of a bear. I think I have only seen two close to it, one in NE WA next to the border and one in Alaska. Congrats to your friend.
-
HOLY CRAP! Thats all I can say in nicer words than I would use :chuckle: I like the picture in the back of the Runner.
-
Boy, what a BAR! I like the pic of it in the back of the rig too...congrats to all involved!
-
Good God man! :o That's friggin huge!
-
Alright I believe. That is a TOAD. WOW.... :yike:
-
You cant measure a bear with the hide on it, not 23" I will gurantee that.
-
what a pig congrats
-
skin it ,and measure it with out the bottom jaw, that will get a good green score, then later have someone dry score it.I would like to see it.Im thinking right around 21" its a nice bear a trophy for here for sure, nice bear you should be proud
-
What a freakin monster! Wow.
-
What a hawg, way to go.

-
Thats a pig!!!!!!!! :IBCOOL:
-
:o makes you think twice about pickin' berries to imagine that thing squinting through the brush checkin' you out.
-
Poulsbo - was this taken in the Clearwater area. I've heard rumor of a 620 lb black bear taken in the Clearwater area but this may just be the bruiser they were talking about. Anyone else hear of a 620 pounder?
Can't wait to see the mount.
-
Nice bear... wouldn't want to run into that with berry pail in hand. :)
-
theres gonna be a story coming out in the kitsap paper about it. i'm glad my hunting partner got him but it was very tough for me to watch a trophy animal like that walk away.i was to much of a woosy to run into the scotch broom after him. i know i did the right thing by not shooting him, without having an absolute clear shot, i couldnt imagine wounding something that big.
-
Didn't Eric Ross shoot a similar sized bear last season on the East side near the Clock? I'm fairly certain his bear went over 21" as well.

-
I have the Washington state record for black bear and is only listed in the new Boone and Crockett book. My name is Lars Swartling and the score is 21 12/16. It came from Mica peak in the spokane valley.
-
Big bear for sure. If I remember right it was not shot to far out of town.
-
Correct it was very close to liberty lake
-
He's got some Competition on the State record. A Colville Valley women shot a 550 + lb. black bear in Oct. 2008 in Stevens County. She was on stand when her husband was making a deer drive to her and this bear came running out at her. The story was in the Chewelah paper. I also heard about it when I was over deer hunting. I don't know if it was in anyother paper.
-
any news on the green score
