Title: 550 pound bear shot last week.
Post by: poulsbo on October 21, 2008, 10:29:26 AM: i blew my chance to shoot an enormous bear on the 11th had him in the scotchbroom @ 40+/- yards with slugs i couldn't tell which end was which so i let him walk, the next time i saw him i ranged him @ 130 yds. he had no legs and his ears were on the side of his head, i told my two hunting partners that this was by far the biggest bear i'd ever seen, long story short i have honey do's on sunday the 12th i get a phone call to come help get out the bear my buddy caught him eating blueberries about 900yds from where i had seen him, his head green scores right at 23" he was 550 lbs. he's so big the taxidermist had to order a grizzly mold to full body mount him. i will try to get some pics posted, anyone know what the state record is for a blackbear skull?

Post by: firefighter4607 on October 21, 2008, 10:51:51 AM: I can tell you what the state record is for the "Record Book for Washington's Big Game Animals 2nd edition" is Rifle is 21 10/16, Archery is 20 10/16, and Black Powder is 21 3/16. Hopefully that helps you out a little bit :dunno:

Post by: yelp on October 21, 2008, 06:08:59 PM: sounds to me they measured it with fur on 23" is very big. melon head nice bear. also the on ly way to measurethe weight of a bear that size is to quarter it annd weigh pieces or take it on the truck scale. :chuckle:

We worked together at Zetec for about 3 years before I moved on. How do you know him, do you see him?

Ya I know him. He lives in the same town I do, and is also a Perry Tech grad like myself. I see him around town quite a bit.

It score is 21 12/16, and is not listed in the Washington record book. This last year it was accepted into Boone and Crockett in the 26th edition. The bear came Mica Peak in Spokane and was shot in 2001.

Post by: boneaddict on October 28, 2008, 06:18:26 AM: Welcome Lars, and that is a dandy bear Poulsbo. I would still suspect the measurement since the largest bear ever killed in the Western half of the us was just listed in Eastmans as 22 and change. Still a great looking bear.

It was August up at Spencer Meadows. He was hunting elk calves. Mamma elk was having none of it though, and the elk left the meadow at a fast trot. That bear looked like a Volkswagon Beetle walking thru the tall grass on the meadow though.

Post by: poulsbo on October 28, 2008, 06:35:46 PM: we got him out whole his weight was 558 lbs. on a scale not guessed. his measurement was off base by the taxidermist, with a set of calipers it measures 21 5/16, the right side of his head is flat by close to 1/2 inch looks deformed , hit by car??? my buddy shot him with a slug at 35+/- yds the area is one solid patch of blueberries, it's a chunk of private ground thats 30 acre parcel, is a shotgun only area, otherwise i would have had a shot at him on sat. i ranged him broadside at 125 i wish i had my 7mag i would have taken a poke at him . ok here we go with some more pics that suck.

Post by: poulsbo on October 31, 2008, 03:00:20 PM: theres gonna be a story coming out in the kitsap paper about it. i'm glad my hunting partner got him but it was very tough for me to watch a trophy animal like that walk away.i was to much of a woosy to run into the scotch broom after him. i know i did the right thing by not shooting him,without having an absolute clear shot, i couldnt imagine wounding something that big.

I bought my "Lab Pup" from his wife. She showed me the pictuers and an i got to shake his hand. That is one hell of a bear.

Oh and tell him the pup is great. the fanily loves him and is learning quickly.......

She was on stand when her husband was making a deer drive to her and this bear came running out at her. The story was in the Chewelah paper. I also heard about it when I was over deer hunting. I don't know if it was in anyother paper.
